Method Statement for Pipe Culvert

 Purpose

This work shall consist of the construction of RCC pipe culvert in accordance with NHA specification item
No. 501 and in conformity with the lines, grades and dimension shown on the drawing or as approved
drawing.
NHA specification item NO.501 shall be followed for construction of RCC pipe culvert.

 Scope

The Scope of work includes the following

1. Excavation
2. Lean
3. PCC Bedding as per construction drawing/approved shop drawing
4. Placing of Pipe
5. Jointing of Pipes
6. Encasement of pipe
7. Backfilling as per approved section.

 Material

1. Approved Lean concrete (PCC) under pipe shall be used.


2. Approved class “B” concrete for pipe encasement.
3. RCC pipe class II or class IV tested in accordance with AASHTO designation M-170 shall be used.
4. Approved Rubber rings at pipe joints.

5. Batching Plant
6. Plate Compactor

 Man Power
1. Engineers
2. Foreman
3. Surveyor
4. Carpenter
5. Mason
6. Excavator & Roller operators
7. Personnel with sub-contractors
 Procedure
1. The trench shall be excavated true to the lines and grade shown in approved shop drawing.
2. Stone soling (not part of design) shall be provided below the lean surface. In case stone soling is not
provided excavated bed shall be compacted to conform with the lines, grades and
dimensions as per approved Shop drawing before laying of lean concrete.
3. Laying of Lean concrete of 100Kg/cm2 strength of 0.075m thickness as given in approved Shop
drawing shall be provided on the excavated surface below PCC bedding of pipe.
4. The PCC class “B” bedding of 170Kg/cm2 of 0.300m thickness shall be provided below the pipes as
per approved shop drawing.
5. The arrangement for placing of pipe on the PCC bed shall be done carefully so as not to cause
damage or undue strain to the pipes, the laying of pipes shall start from the outlet end and shall be
completed at the inlet end.
6. Joints shall be constructed as per NHA specification item No.500 and clause Nos. 501.3.3 Joints, and
all Joints shall be filled with stiff mortar composed of one Part of Portland cement and Two Part of
Sand as per NHA specification after placement of approved rubber rings at joint.
7. After finishing curing of the grouted joints, steel shuttering shall be erected supported with
scaffolding pipes.
8. PCC class “B” encasing of pipes shall be carried out to the true lines and grade as shown in
approved shop drawing.
9. After De-shuttering of the side shutters, curing shall be done as specified.
10. Quality control test of concrete shall be done as per NHA Specification

Construction of Pipe Culvert Wing Walls, Cut Off Wall, Apron Slab & Footing under Pipe:
Work shall be carried out as per approved drawing, as below
1. Excavation shall be carried out for footing under pipe ends together with cut off wall & apron slab.
2. Lean concrete shall be laid for above footing, cut off wall & apron slab.
3. Steel rebars shall be erected as per approved shop drawing/ BBS.
4. Formwork shall be done for above items.
5. Concrete casting shall be carried out with approved class of mix (Class-A 1).
6. Curing of above items.
7. Steel rebars erection for wing walls end pipe encasement & head wall as per approved drawing.
8. Formwork erection.
9. Concrete pouring of above wing walls, end encasement & head wall.
10. De- Shuttering of above cast item on specified period.
11. Water curing shall be continued for specified period.
12. Quality assurance during & after concrete casting shall be carried as per specification.
13. Backfilling: Backfilling shall be carried out along either sides of the encasement in a maximum 20
cm thick compacted layers and in a width as stipulated in NHA specifications clause 501.4.3.
14. Material shall be as per specification and shall be approved.
