6.0 SCOPE
This general specification meets the design, supply and application of all the material coating
walls for use in buildings Vale.
Wall linings are finishing materials applied on bases or substrates (masonry, structures,
among others) for aesthetic purpose and to protect the construction against bad weather and
other external agents.
The application of the specified wall linings shall meet the requirements defined in documents
CP-A-501, CP-A-515, EG-A-411, EG-C-404, ES-A-411, ES-C-404 and in the current
technical standards, not being restricted to these.
Other types of wall linings may be used, provided that Vale is interested, and that the
materials meet the intended purpose. The materials adopted shall have characteristics
consistent with the conditions and intended uses, in accordance with the functional features
of each environment. All products and services specified shall ensure the required
performance.
Mortar lining is that on masonry in a continuous and uniform manner, including plastering and
grouting. The latter will be straightened and smoothed, and shall be specified as final lining.
In loco prepared mortar shall consist of Portland cement (binder), water, fine washed
aggregate, whose grain size shall vary from medium to fine, and, if applicable, lime (binder)
and admixture (waterproofing, accelerators, retarders).

NBR NM 52.
The additives to be used shall comply with the requirements of NBR 10908.
The initial layer of the lining is made of roughcasting that promotes adhesion between the
base (masonry) and the plaster, so that it does not become detached from the surface to be
lined. The plaster is the layer that regulates the surface to be lined. The grout is the thin layer
that prepares the surface to be lined for the final lining. The grout is not required when the
final wall lining is performed by the application of ceramic plates, natural rocks, or melamine
laminates.
The execution of lining shall comply with the procedures defined in standard NBR 7200, and
the terminology employed shall be in accordance with standard NBR 13529.
The types of mortars, plaster/grout may be classified as to the physical properties and
characteristics of the surface finishing.
Common: Plaster/grout - it allows an exchange of moisture between the grouted surface and
the environment;
Hydrophobic Water Repellent: Plaster/grout – it prevents the ingress of moisture derived from
the rainfall due to the addition of hydrophobic additives to its composition. This prevention
shall not occur in respect to the diffusion of water steam;

The recommended thicknesses of mortar for lining of interior and exterior walls are indicated
in the following table, in accordance with NBR 13749.
The type of industrialized product to be considered for lining is the mortar consisting of
Portland cement with selected mineral aggregates and special non-toxic admixture, being
dry-mixed by the manufacturer and requiring only the addition of water in loco. Another type
of industrialized product to be considered for lining is plaster that, being equivalent to the
mortar, requires only the addition of water in loco.
Mortar for wall and ceiling lining, in accordance with NBR 13281;
Polymeric mortar for waterproofing lining of walls, as provided in NBR 11905;
Plaster for application of internal wall linings, as provided in NBR 13867 and
NBR 13207.
The specification of the industrialized mortar shall comply with the purpose of its application.
The application shall comply with the manufacturer's recommendation. The wall lining system
shall comply with NBR 13749.
Ceramic plates are made of ceramic porcelain, with porous body, glazed surface on one side,
where they are dyed. They are made of clays and/or inorganic raw materials, shaped by
extrusion (type A), pressing (type B), or other processes (type C). The unglazed surface,
called back area, has projections to increase the adherence of the laying mortar. The
waterproofing of the enameled surface shall be absolute.
The ceramic plates are manufactured in various colors, with bright and satin finishings and
plain or decorated patterns.

In accordance with NBR 13816 and NBR 13818, they are classified as follows:
Class A: They do not present any imperfection visible to the naked eye and from a distance
of one meter under good lighting conditions;
Class B: Structural and/or surface imperfections are allowed, provided that the static
structure is not compromised. They do not present cracks. Imperfections shall be evidenced
through laboratory tests. Such defects visible to the naked eye and from a distance of one
meter shall be absorbed by the appearance of the set.
Class C: More prominent structural and/or surface imperfections, visible to the naked eye and
from a distance of one meter, even small cracks, are permitted. These cracks shall not
compromise the static structure, which shall be evidenced through laboratory tests.
The technical characteristics of the materials shall comply with the NBR 13818 as to the
permissible dimensional variations between parts, surface finishing, back area porosity, and
resistance to acid and thermal shock.
The environment shall be verified and Vale shall be consulted as to the recommended
solution for finishing the edges of the lining.
Smaller ceramic plates are called mosaic tiles, with sizes from 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm and thickness
that varies between 4 mm and 5 mm. Plates pasted by kraft paper sheets are provided in
order to facilitate the application. The kraft paper is subsequently removed with water. They
may be porcelain, enamel, glazed, or glass.
The types and sizes of the plates shall be specified in the design.
The main properties of the lining on ceramic plates are: no spreading of fire; high
waterproofing; low hygroscopicity; potential difference not provoked; non-radioactivity; non-
generation of static electricity; and excellent insulation.
The laying of ceramic plates shall be done with adhesive mortar, as prescribed and
recommended in the NBR 13754 and NBR 14081. It may also be applied mortar prepared in
loco, and this process is currently less used. The method used to paste the parts shall be
defined prior to the establishment of the plaster thickness.
The supplier of the ceramic plates shall set the thickness size of the expansion joints
recommended for laying of the specified parts.
The grouting mortar prepared in loco is classified as cement paste (plastic mass), in
accordance with EG-C-404E and to the supplier's specification of the ceramic parts.
The grouting may be performed using cement paste prepared in loco or industrialized mortar.

The need for using structures or parts for fixing ceramic plates with greater sizes, especially
facades, shall be analyzed.
The lining types of natural rocks shall be identified in the design specifications.
The wall lining in natural rocks may be performed on plates or quarry chips. The plates are
derived from the stone block roughened through mechanical sawing. The quarry chips are
uneven flat fragments, with approximately rectangular or trapezoidal shapes.
The pieces for wall lining in natural rocks shall comply with the shape and sizes set forth in
the design.
The base for laying decorative stones, similarly to ceramic lining, shall be plaster or concrete.
The process to be used for laying natural rocks on walls shall consider their sizes. The use of
pasting for bigger natural rocks, especially in facades, shall be evaluated. The use of metal
parts for fastening the plates shall comply with NBR 15846.
The finishing and preparation of pieces for wall lining in natural rocks, depending on the
design specification, may be rustic, sawed, roughened, polished, and shined.
The grouting between the stones can be done with mortar prepared "in loco" or with
industrialized mortar. The stone supplier must specify the type of mortar to be used for laying
and grouting according to the type of stone to be used.
The high pressure decorative laminates (HPDL) are plates used for lining rigid substrates.
They are made of layers of fibrous material, cellulosic material (e.g. paper), impregnated with
amino (melamine) and phenolic thermo-stable resins, mounted, pressed under heat and high
pressure, where the surface layers are decorative on one or both sides.
The application of melamine laminate shall use contact adhesive specified by the product
supplier.
The substrates recommended for application of the melamine laminates are: masonry with
lining of straightened, flat, and suede finishing plaster; concrete base; ceramic base; plywood
base; and metal plates.
The bases not indicated by the supplier for application of the melamine laminate are: spackle;
paintings; wainscots; and wallpaper.
