Introduction

The company was started a century ago in Northern Minnesota


and was named the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company 3M. It began
a mining company in 1902, where its original mission was to mine corundum, a
mineral used for making grinding wheels and sandpaper. The company was founded
by five people who included; Hermon Cable, Danley Budd, Henry Bryan, William
McGonagle, and John Dwan.

The original mission of the company was to utilize all the mined minerals to produce
grinding wheels and sandpaper. Currently, the company has been considered a
significant power in terms of technological innovations. Therefore, it is considered
the world's powerhouse where its products aim to improve the daily lives of all
individuals across the globe. The mission statement is, 3M is committed to actively
contributing to sustainable development through environmental protection, social
responsibility, and economic progress. The company is committed to impacting the
lives of society through its products.

3M company also have a culture around the individual initiative, collaboration,


tolerance of mistakes, and innovative leadership. In 2020, the company had a total of
95000 employees, It’s a huge amount of employee are work with the 3M both from
the US and other 65 countries.

3M has strived to produce its consumers with innovative technologies that never existed. In
fact, the company has a goal that states at least a quarter of its total annual sales should come
from products that did not exist five years earlier.

3M Company was the first major manufacturing company to voice its support of
environmental care and protection. Company have good leadership quality with the help of
skill employee persons.
The company’s innovation policy ensures that investors are certain of future earnings due to
the company’s sustainable growth model.
Analysis

Core Purpose and Values of the Company


3M Company deals with healthcare products and consumer products. 3M company
operate around 70 country. The core purpose of the 3M Company is to improve the
daily lives of millions of people living around the world. The values of the company
are to act with honesty and integrity in every activity that they perform. The company
also has a value of providing high-quality innovative technology to its customers.
Another value is the dedication to providing a good return to their investors. Lastly,
the company has the value of respecting the social and physical environment all over
the world.

Macro issues that affect the industry


The analysis offers a way of analyzing the macro-environmental factors that impact
the company. The macro-environmental factors are the political, economic, social,
technological, environmental, and legal factors. 3M Company is in the healthcare
and consumer goods industry. The company can use PESTEL analysis to scrutinize
the healthcare and consumer goods industry. The trade regulations will affect the
consumer goods industry. Some of the economic factors are unemployment,
inflation, and competition practices of the firm.
For the sociological factors, changes in demographics and people’s attitudes and
values are of major concern. People’s attitudes will influence the kind of goods they
prefer, for example, there has been a rise in the preference for healthy dieting and
food safety. The technological factors that mostly come in handy are technological
development. 3M Company has come up with products such as healthcare software,
optical films, and electronic materials. In terms of environmental factors, the
company should consider issues such as waste management, environmental
pollution laws, and climate change. Legal factors the company should consider are
antitrust laws, copyrights and patents, and health and safety laws. The company
should evaluate if these factors can protect its intellectual property rights.
The Value Chain’s social and environmental impacts the value chain involve several
activities from sourcing raw materials to the production and distribution of products
until they reach the final consume. The value chain social impacts that the 3M
Company has brought about are health and safety issues, involving the community,
and focusing on the consumer. The company is constantly involved in scientific
research to develop better products for their customers like the production of passive
fire protection facilities. The environmental impacts of the company’s value chain
have been the production of toxic waste, water pollution, and the production of
renewable energy.
Conclusion

3M delights both in reinforcing the principles laid down by some of its key early
executives and also celebrating the ongoing success of its current staff. With a
continual emphasis on innovation and product development 3M is committed to
finding solutions for its diverse group of customers. Management is also committed
to encouraging and supporting staff in their of excellence. The company attributes
much of its success to the 15 percent rule which allows staff to search for proactive
solutions for difficult problems. For a company whose core competency might be
described making things stick. 3M has developed an innovative entrepreneurial
workplace culture that its stakeholders seem more than happy to be stuck with.
