CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction:
India has stood at first place in road accident deaths among 199 countries in the world, as per the
WHO Global Report on Road Safety 2018. Around 11% of total Accidental deaths are from India,
at a rate of 53 accidents and 17 deaths for every hour. As per the statistics of Ministry Of Road
Transport & Highways (MORTH), the number of accidents in 2017 is 4,64,910 and 2018 is
4,67,044 which denotes that the accidental rate is increased by 0.46 % and the death rate is
increased to 2.4%. The below Table1.1 shows the variations in number of road accidents in India
from 2014 to 2018 as per the cases reported to Ministry.

1.1.1 Hyderabad Accident Scenario:
The main problem of transportation in developed cities like Hyderabad is large number of road
accidents happening during a decade period. This leads to loss of life, property damage, social
suffering and destitution of environment. Since the facilities on roads is increasing by construction
of the flyovers, traffic signaling and making them available to the users resulting in decrease of the
death rate in road accidents but increase in the rate of road accidents. The rate of death from 2018 to
2019 is decreased by 10 percent simultaneously the rate of road accidents in Hyderabad is increased
by 7 percent in half the year due to the increase in the number of vehicles in traffic every year.

1.1.2 Study Area:
Kompally is a town of Medchal-Malkajgiri district in state of Telangana. It covers an area of 10.78

km2. The population in kompally is 15,575. It is the Head Quarters of Keesara Revenue Division
andalso a part of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). National Highway –
44 and two state highways (SH-1 & SH-6) passes through Medchal.
1.2 Objectives of the Study:
 To study the distribution of Accident data such as fatal, non-fatal and vehicles damaged
during years 2019,2020 & 2021.
 To notify the causes of accidents during 2019,2020 & 2021
 To suggest the safety measures to decrease number of accidents.
 To identify Block Spots in the kompally locality using Google Maps.
1.3 Causes &Effects of Road Accidents:
Causes of Road Accidents:
 The main reason of an accident is distraction of drivers towards external factors like music,
radio, mobile and etc. which makes drivers to lose attention on driving.
 Weather condition also plays a role in the road accidents.
 The drinking of alcohol by drivers makes them weak in taking decisions and results an
accident.
 Fatigue of driver leads to misjudging, which can be observed in most of the accidents
happened during night time.
Effects of Road Accidents:
 Firstly, an accident leads to loss of life or a serious injury mostly affects the family of the
persons who involved in the accident.
 A sudden activity (accident) makes environment gets disturbed.
 Damage of property or vehicles.
 Loss of Economy

1.4 Organization of the report:
Chapter-1: In this chapter introduction to the project is included with the accidental scenario of
Hyderabad. Selection of study area with the objectives of study are also been part of this chapter.
Chapter-2: This chapter is regarding review of literature, in which the conceptualization of

different journals and papers are explained.
Chapter-3: This chapter consists of methodology followed for completing this project. The step
wise procedure has been explained clearly to complete this analysis.
Chapter-4: In this we discussed about different types of data we collected from different sources to
complete this project.
Chapter-5: In this chapter the types analysis we made in the project and the results we obtained
from the analysis been discussed thoroughly along with the charts and bars.
Chapter-6: The identification of Block Spots and locations of Block Spots in the kompally are
included along with the numbers of accidents for the years 2019,2020 and 2021 considered in the
study period for this project.
Chapter-7: This chapter consists of conclusions made from the analysis and the suggestions given
for the black spots in the kompally to control the accidents and death rate.

1.5 Summary
This include the Accidental Scenario of India and Accident Statistics of India from 2014-
20published by MORTH and WHO. The accident scenario of Hyderabad also included in this
chapter along with the introduction of Study Area. The objectives of study, Causes and Effects of
Accidents and Organization of whole report in mentioned in this chapter.

CHAPTER-2
LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Introduction:
Literature review consists of point of understanding from our concern on different journal papers
published on the related topic of our project subject.
2.2 Specific Study:
Amith Gosh and Sumanpaul (2013) [ 1 ] : has made a spatio - temporal study on road accidents in
Kolkata. Three years (2007-2009) accident data of age - sex and time wise distribution is collected
from the head office of Kolkata traffic police. Analysis has been made using GIS software and been
divided into categories of fatal, non-fatal and serious depending upon victim percentage.
K. Jaya Sundar and P. RamyaSree (2015) [ 2 ]:the study involves road accident scenario in
Cyberabad and Hyderabad by considering two ways as Hayathnagar to Cyberabad and Saifabad to
Hyderabad. Analysis has been done based on time wise, month wise, year wise and causes of
accidents.
S.S. Kajal and Rashnimalik (2015) [ 3 ] : has studied about accidents by considering National
Highway 10 between Hansi to Army cant. The data regarding accidents is collected from the police
department for period of 10 years (2005 – 2014). The geometric condition of the road and the traffic
parameters are also considered in the analysis.
Dr. A.S. Kanagalakshmi et.al (2016) [ 4 ] :has made road accident analysis on National Highway-
5connecting four statesand the of road accidents is collected from the concerned police departments
of states. Analysis of secondary data by WSI (Weighted Severity Index) and analysis of primary
data by conducting Road inventory study, traffic volume count and speed & delay study. Using GIS
the block spots are identified on the National Highway -5.
Dr. KameswaraRao et.al (2016) [ 5 ] :has made a study on severity of accidents in Cyberabad and
Hyderabad using Ordered Probit Model. Analysis has been done by collecting the accident data of
Hayathnagar for a period of three years from the police department and the data is divided into
seven different categories such as fatal and non–fatal.

Dr. KameswaraRao et.al (2016) [ 6 ]:has studied road accident scenario in the Hyderabad and
Cyberabad by making as divisions and conducting field surveys. the analysis made month wise and
day wise.
Dr. Rakeshgupta and shakirahmadbhat (2017) [ 7 ] : accident analysis on State Highway -11 of
Haryana extending from Guhana to Sonepat has been one using the data published by NCRB
(National Crime Records Bureau).
JayeshJuremalani (2018) [ 8 ] :road traffic accident analysis of Vadodara city and a model
prediction. vehicle registration data from Regional Transport office. The seven years accident data
is collected from police. Analysis done based on hourly, monthly, location wise, weather condition,
vehicle type and nature of accident.
Akashbatra et.al (2018) [ 9 ] :a review study of road accident model for Karnal city of Haryana
state has been done by collecting the accident data of state highway-8 from the police department
and by conducing field survey. Analysis has been done based on age group, type of vehicle and
severity of accidents. The black spots are identified and remedies are suggested.
2.3 Summary:
In this chapter the concept and study conducted in different research papers, journals for accidental
analysis are discussed.

CHAPTER-3
METHODOLOGY
3.1 Introduction:
The chapter provides an overall idea regarding how this project is started and the process included
for doing this project from selecting of study area to identifying black spots in the study area. From
this chapter we can easily come to an idea to complete this project successfully by knowing the
procedure mentioned in the below steps.
3.2 Methodology:
The below Figure 3.1 shows us the step wise procedure we followed for making this study of
Accident Analysis.

Step -1 Selection of Site (Study Area):
Kompally is a town of Medchal-Malkajgiri district in state of Telangana. It covers an area of 10.78

km2. The population in Kompally is 15,575, It is the Head Quarters of Keesara Revenue Division
and also a part of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), Being a rapidly
growing town of Malkajgiri district Medchal has a National Highway (NH– 44) passing through
center of the town covering few traffic junctions. The Outer Ring Road (ORR) at Kandlakoya also a
part of Medchal Jurisdiction.
Step -2 Collections of Data:
The data of accidents at Kompally during the time period considered i.e. from January 2019 to
December 2021 is collected from the Office of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic)
Cyberabad. The following data is collected from Police
 Abstract on Accidents (From Jan2019 to Dec2021)
 Detailed data of Accidents (From Jan2019 to Dec2021)
The abstract on road traffic accidents data has been collected from local Police Station of Kompally
and the detailed data regarding road traffic accidents in Kompally for the period of three years is
collected from the Road Traffic Accidents Management (RTAM) Cell, in the office of the
Commissioner of Police Cyberabad.
This detailed data consists, Secondary data of accident that may be include following parameters
related to accident:
The census data regarding population of Kompally is required to do statistical analysis of Accident
Rate per Population. So, it essential to collect the population data of Kompally Town for the study
period considered in the project i.e. year 2019, 2020 & 2021.
This population data is collected from the Government Websites of Stat and Central to calculate
present and last year population of Kompally. The web links are mentioned in the references sheet
which consists of following departments. Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner,
India, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India and Unified Birth & Death Registration-
Management Information System, Government of Telangana.

Finally to calculate accident rate per kilometer length of road in Kompally we need the data
regarding road networks in Kompally. Due to non availability of data from direct sources the road
network data is collected from the website of government called Open Data Telangana. The data
can be collected from the datasets of roads in the web link of particular website mentioned below in
the page of references of this project.
Step -3 Analyses of Data:
The analysis of accidents is divided into two sections. Firstly, The secondary data received from
Police Department of Cyberabad Traffic is used to Analysis purpose in different statistical
parameters. Analysis can be made based on the following considerations

Then, statistical analyses of accidents based on the following to two variables related to
Kompally are calculated to know the basic parameters regarding Accidents.
 Accident Rate based on Population
 Fatality rate based on Population
 Accident Rate per Kilometer
In the analysis of Accident rate per kilometer the whole length of roads in Medchal District is
considered, which consist of National Highway -44, State highways, Major District Roads and
Other District Roads.

Step-4 Results and Discussions
The results will be obtained by doing the statistical Analysis will be represented in the form of
tables. This consists of year wise accident rate and fatality rate based on population of Kompally
and accident rate per kilometer length of roads in Medchal.
The end of the analysis made on the secondary data received from the department of Traffic Police,
the results from that analysis will be shown in the form of the charts prepared to represent the
variations of Accidents in the Kompally during the period of 2019, 2020 & 2021. A detailed
discussion of the results will be made to enhance the variations and causes of accidents.
Step-5 Identifying the Block Spots
The places of higher accident rate in the Kompally territory are marked in the map of Kompally
town and those places are identified as Block Spots in the Kompally Jurisdiction which are more
tendency to accident.
Step-6 Suggestions and Conclusions
Proper suggestions are given to decrease the accidents or to control the rate of accidents as per the
causes of accidents and a conclusion is made.
3.3 Summary:
In this chapter we discussed step wise procedure we followed to complete this project. This
methodology gives a brief description regarding each step we considered to carry out this project.

CHAPTER-4
DATA COLLECTION
4.1 Introduction:
Data collection is step in which we will collect the necessary data required to complete our
project. In this project we divided data collection into two parts they are
 Traffic or Secondary data
 Administrative data
4.1.1 Secondary data:
The data of accidents collected from the Police Department of Cyberabad is known as secondary
data. This can be again sub divided into two terms
 Accident Abstract
 Detailed Data
Accident Abstract:
The Accident Abstract contains is the document which contains only numbers of accidents not in
descriptive.
Detailed Data:
The sheets collected from Road Traffic Accident Management Cell (RTAM Cell) of the Office of
the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Cyberabad. These data sheets represent the Secondary
data which include

4.1.2 Administrative Data:

Management Information System, Government of Telangana. This data includes

4.2 Summary:
The collection of Kompally accident data from the Department of Police in the form of Abstract
data and detailed data including with collection of Administrative data from Government websites is
discussed.

CHAPTER-5
ANALYSIS AND RESULTS
5.1 Introduction:
The results obtained during analysis of accident data are briefly discussed in this chapter. The
analysis is done based on different parameters such as type of accident, vehicle profile, age wise,
pedestrian accidents.
5.2 Analysis &Results: The following are method of analysis and results are from the analysis
included in the form of Figures showing charts.
5.2.1 Type of Accidents:

The accidents can be mainly observed as two types i.e., fatal and non-fatal accidents. The below
Figure 5.1 shows us the rate of fatal and non-fatal accidents taken place in the Kompally town
during the study period considered that is from January 2019 to December 2021.
We can observe that, from the year 2019 to 2020 the fatal accidents are increased by 7.5% while the
non-fatal accidents are decreased by 27.5% during this period. In case of number of injuries and
deaths in this time period the rate of injuries is decreased to 5.5% but the death rate is increased to
17% and on other side the overall rate of accidents is decreased to 12.5% in Kompally.

5.2.2 Month Wise Analysis:
In this type of analysis the datasets are being arranged in the monthly order starting from the month
January to December taking both the years (2018 & 2019), dividing the data into every month wise
and making sum of two annuals to show monthly variation of accidents in the Medchal.

From the Figure 5.2 mentioned above we can say that, the month March and June are higher in
number of accidents compared to other and the number of accidents in the month October and April
are quite similar, month February and September stands below in the graph with least number of
accidents in both the years 2019, 2020 and 2021 of the study period.
5.2.3 Time Wise Analysis:
This can be done by dividing the time to equal intervals of two hours each. The accidental data will
be retrieved in the order of every two hours for both the years considered.
We can observe in the below Figure 5.3 which shows us the time wise distribution of accidents, we
can see that number of accidents are increased gradually with respect to simultaneous of the raise of
time. Most of the accidents are taken place in the time of 8PM to 10PM where we can observe entry
of Heavy Vehicles into city gets started.

Approximately 44% of accidents are occurred in the time between 4PM to 10 PM. From the close
observations we know that all the Educational institutions and some of the companies for their
morning shift employees will be closed at 4PM so, the traffic from the institutes and companies
reaches the road at same time which causes congestion of traffic that will leads to chance of
accident. Similarly, between 8 to10 PM the stores on the road and few companies will be closed for
end of the day, due to endless work in office the body gets fatigue results careless in the driving of
vehicle can be observed from the employees which may leads to an accident.
5.2.4 Day wise Analysis:
The day wise analysis can be made by filtering the data into each day of a week. The data can be
shown by arranging the number of accidents on each day of every week for the period of time has
considered i.e. from January 2019, 2020 to December 2021.
We can see that, the below Figure 5.4 can give an idea about the distribution of accidents on the day
wise basis for the study period. Where we can observe that accidents on the day of Wednesday is
least in number since it is middle of the week. But on other hand we can see that in the starting and
ending of the week the accident rate is maximum.

On Saturday the number of accidents is more since it is the end of week. It means the peoples from
the weekend parties will be in the mood of drinking, which makes them to drive rash and at the end
it leads to an accident.
5.2.5 Age Wise Analysis:
This type of analysis is obtained by dividing the of accident data into desired interval of age group
for the two years of study period.
From the above Figure 5.5 we can say that, the maximum number of accidents are caused by the
people belongs to age group between 25-35, that indicates most of people accused in the accidents
are employees or workers.
So, in the hurry of their work they may drive the vehicle rashly by neglecting the rules of traffic that
leads to an accident finally.

5.2.6 Vehicle Profile of Accused:
This analysis based on the vehicle profile of accused is obtained by retrieving the data into different
categories of vehicles given in the data.

The above Figure 5.6 shows us the distribution of different types of vehicle profile of accused. We
can see that most of the accidents are caused by the drivers of Lorry’s, as we discussed earlier in the
topic Time Wise Analysis of accidents, the point to entry of Heavy Vehicles into city gets started at
the time interval between 8PM to 10 PM. Which can be noticed in this part since, most of the
accidents are caused by lorry drivers. To deliver the goods on time the drivers need to avoid their
sleep which makes them to rash driving or drunk & drive, which results to cause an accident.

5.2.7 Vehicle Profile of Victim :
Similar to the above analysis of accused vehicle profile, this also includes retrieving the data into
different categories of vehicles of victim from the given accidental data.

As we can see in Figure 5.7, most of the victims in accidents are two wheelers or motorists.
Generally most of the two wheelers are owned by the employees or youngsters (students). So, in the
hurry of their day work or in the rush towards attending the institute on time there is a chance to
drive the vehicle fast and rash without caring to the traffic rules and regulations.
5.2.8 Pedestrian Accidents:
This analysis has made to know the number of pedestrians affected by the accidents in the Medchal
locality during the study period considered that is from Jan 2018 to Dec 2019.
The analysis can be seen in below mentioned Figure 5.8 where the pedestrian accidents are divided
on yearly basis and sub divided into the fatal and non-fatal accidents.
From the analysis we can sense that, the total number of accidents to the pedestrians from the year
2018 to 2019 is decreased by 53% which is a good thing to be recognized. The number of fatal and
non-fatal pedestrian accidents also decreased during this period.

5.2.9 Causes of Accidents:
In this analysis we will identify the major cause for accidents taking place in the Kompally. We can
see from below Figure 5.9, Most of the accidents (around 82%) in the Kompally are occurred due
the rash driving by the public. It means driving the vehicle in over speed or more than limited speed.
By neglecting the traffic rules the rate of accidents in the Kompally are around 12% of total
accidents. The rest 4% of accidents are occurred due to other reasons such as without
wearing helmet,confusion, flare or blaze resulting from opposite vehicle light.

5.3 Statistical Analysis:
This analysis is involved in the calculation of following three parameters:
i. Accident Rate based on population

ii. Fatality Rate based on population

The Accident Rate based on population can be determined knowing the population of Kompally for
the three years 2019,2020 and 2021 which is calculated for 2019 but the population of Kompally in
2018 is directly taken as reference from Wikipedia of Medchal which is mentioned in below Table
5.1

5.4 Summary:
This chapter summarizes about the types of analysis we made in the project along with their results
are discussed briefly and the results are plotted in bars nd chart formats, from this analysis the block
spots are identified.

CHAPTER-6
IDENTIFICATION OF BLACKSPOTS
6.1 Introduction:
Black Spots are the places or locations identified as high tendency places to go under an accident;
these can be called as Accidental Zones. Which are identified in particular area to take some special
care and control the accidents in those locations.
As we mentioned earlier six (6) places are identified as Black Spots in the Medchal from the Study
we made and the data we received from the Police Department. The reasons are mentioned
previously so the statistics will be shown below in Tables 6.1 and Table 6.2.

6.4 Summary:
In this chapter we discussed about the Block Spots identified in the Kompally Jurisdiction from the
analysis we made during this study. The stats regarding the Black Spots for the years 2019 & 2020 &
2021.

CONCLUSONS AND SUGGESTIONS
7.1 Conclusions:
 The total number of accidents taken place for the year 2019 & 2020 &2021 in the Kompally
town was 167 ,158 and 169 respectively.
 The total number of deaths in the Kompally town for the year of 2019 , 2020 & 2021 was 8 ,
35 & 30 respectively.
 The number of accidents in 2019 at the Kompally bus stop are increased from 9 to13 in the
year 2020 and 2021. So, this place is identified as one of the Black Spot or Accident prone
area in the Kompally locality.
 Kompally check post is the area having high number deaths in both the years 2019 , 2020 &
2021. hence, this place is considered as a Block Spot in the Medchal Town.
 The junction of Vivekananda statue is also marked as Block Spot due no change in the rate
accidents in both the years 2019 , 2020 & 2021.
 The total number of accidents at Kandlakoya junction or Kandlakoya X road are increased
from 11 accidents in the year 2019 to 12 number of accidents in the year 2019, this is the
reason to consider it as a Block Spot in the Kompally.
 Dulapally X road is identified as a major Black Spot in the Medchal jurisdiction due rapid
increase in the number of accidents from 2019 to 2021. That is number of accidents in 2019
was 15 while the number of accidents in the year 2021 reached to 16 with 5 deaths.
 Number of accidents at the entrance area at Dulapally shows no improvements that’s the
reason to identify the Dulapally area as a Black Spot.

7.2 Suggestions:
 Avoid rash driving with over speed.

 Educate the people on the traffic rules and regulations.
 Use speed guns to control over speed vehicles.
 Provide speed breakers at Suchitra X Road to control speed
 Regular check and maintenance of vehicle is required.
 Don’t drink alcohol before driving.
 Strict Implementation of traffic rules is necessary.
 Geometric improvements are needed at Dulapally X road.
 An improvement of traffic facilities is required at U turn near Kompally bus stop.
 Extra traffic support can be used at peak hours.
 Increase/change the entry of heavy vehicles into city.
 Provide indication boards before 2km at Kompally check post.
 Improve visible clearance at Dulapally X road.
 Issuing of driving license should be made more strictly.
 Ensure working of vehicle head lights and tail lights.
 Provide Raised humps at required locations with proper indications to control vehicles with
over speed.
 Regular inspection and maintenance of roads is required for every year after the rainy season
to protect roads from pot holes and tec.,
 Provide more indication boards at Kandlakoya Interchange on both ways.
 Required geometric modifications can be adopted according to road traffic conditions.

FUTURE SCOPE
An analysis road accident is important to know the accident rate and death rate. This analysis is
useful to know the major drawback behind the accidents and hence to control the road accidents in
the future period.
In most of the accident analysis the statistical analysis of Accident Rate based on Population,
Fatality Rate based on Population not be observed which can be seen in this project.
This analysis makes a better perception and understanding of the accident scenario and this data will
be useful for the construction of future infrastructure in accident zones.
This analysis can provide an idea how to select or identify the major accident zones and Block Spots
From this study we can suggest the Government to Enforce the Rules of Traffic to control the rate
of Accidents.
