SEED GERMINATION EXPERIMENT

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

State the hypothesis that you are testing to answer the research question. You are required to test one factor which
may affect germination, but if you wish you can design your experiment to test more of them. Briefly indicate what your
experimental and control groups are. In 2-3 sentences justify your hypothesis saying why you chose that particular
factor to test.

Research Question: What do plant seeds need to germinate?

Hypothesis:
Plant seeds to germinate need water, soil, sun, and air.

Experimental Group:
Access to:
1. water, soil, air
2. water, sun, soil
3. soil, air
4. soil
5. sun, soil, air
6. water
7. water, sun
8. air
9. sun
10. water, air
11. water, sun, air

Control Group:
Positive: access to water, sun, soil, and air.
Negative: no access to water, sun, soil, and air.

Justification of the Hypothesis:

* All plants require light for photosynthesis, the process within a plant that converts light, oxygen,
and water into carbohydrates (energy).
* Soil is a substrate for plants to grow in. Soil provides support, nutrients, and a network of water
and air to the plant's roots.
2. MATERIALS AND METHODS

A description of how your experiment was conducted. It should be detailed enough that someone else could recreate
your experiment on its basis. Remember that you have to collect quantitative data. You should use at least 10 seeds
in both experimental and control group. It is advisable that you include a photo or a diagram showing your
experimental set-up.

List of Materials: (add as many bullet points as necessary)

● 13 plastic pots
● soil for 6 pots
● tap water
● aluminium foil
● cling film
● 26 rubber bands
● paper
● scissors
● 65 mung bean seeds

Experimental Steps: (add as many numbered points as necessary)

1. Finding a problem
2. Creating a hypothesis
3. Writing down a control groups and experimental groups
4. Planting seeds in the pots (5 for each)
5. Careful observations
6. Data collection
7. Analysis of results
8. Formulation of conclusion
9. Hypothesis verification
10. Reporting results

3. RESULTS

This section should clearly describe what your results were. Depending on the amount of your data, you may show them
in a written form or as a graph or a table.

11 out of 13 planted seeds have sprouted.

8 out of 13 have fully germinated.
Seeds that had access to water showed the best results.

4. CONCLUSIONS

In this section you should interpret your results and conclude whether your hypothesis was proven right or wrong.
If no clear conclusions can be made, describe how you could improve the experiment to obtain conclusive data.

Hypothesis was proven wrong, seeds need water or soil to sprout. Both tap water and soil
contain needed minerals for seeds to start growing. However sun is necessary for plants to
germinate by photosynthesis.
