INTRODUCTION

Vernier height gauge is a sort of Vernier calipers equipped with a special base and other
attachment, which make the instrument suitable for height measurement. Along with sliding
jaw assembly arrangement is provided to carry a removable clamp. The upper and lower
surfaces of the measuring jaws are parallel to base, so that it can be used for measurements
over or under surfaces.

Parts of Vernier Height Gauge

The vernier height gauge is mainly used in the inspection of parts and layout work. The
vernier height gauge can be used to scribe lines at certain distance above surface with a
scribing attachment in pace of measuring jaw. In some cases dial indicators can also be
attached in the clamp and many exact measurements can be made as it exactly gives the
indication when the dial tip is touching the surface. Surface plates as datum surface are used
for the above measurements.
OBJECTIVE

To measure the height of the object using vernier height gauge.

APPARATUS

 Surface Table
 Vernier height gauge
 Specimens

PROCEDURE

1. Place the object and the vernier height gauge on the surface plate.
2. Note the value on the scale when the moving jaw is touching the bottom of the object.
3. Take the moving / sliding jaw to the top of the object and note down the value on the
scale.
4. The difference between the two measurements will give the height of the object.
RESULT

DISCUSSIONS

1. What is the difference between Vernier and micrometer?

The difference between vernier caliper and micrometer is that the vernier caliper uses
two sliding scales with different spacings between markings on each scale while a
micrometer makes use of a screw to translate small distances moved by its jaws to
larger distances along the marked scale

2. What is the least count of vernier height gauge?

Least count is the difference between one smallest reading of the main scale and one
smallest reading of vernier scale. A common and simple mechanical vernier height
gauge has a least count of 2 0.02 mm.

3. State essential features of Vernier Height gauge?

 Base
 Beam
 Measuring Jaw and Scriber

4. Write two limitations of vernier instruments.

 Available in many lengths
 Fewer moving parts than dial or digital calipers

5. Give examples (at least 3) of vernier height gauge applications.

 Vernier height gauges are used to determine or measure vertical distances in
metrology or metalworking.
 The vernier height gauges are typically measured on a granite surface plate or
to measure the characteristics of apart from a datum plane.
 Typically a scriber, test indicator, touch probe, or CMM-style probe is used to
detect the measured feature.
CONCLUSION
All in all, we had the option to figure out how to get exact estimations and utilize the
vernier height gauge. This lab permitted us to get a superior comprehension of the
standard of the arrangement of fits and to work on involving the different estimating
instruments for the assortment of items. We took in the implications and contrasts
between the "freedom" and "obstruction" fits, as well as the constraints of fits. We
likewise figured out how to see as the "resistance" and "stipend" of the items;
especially for the shaft(s) and hole(s). One of the other principal ideas we acquired
from this lab was with regards to estimations, it is ideal in the event that we can make
the exactness of our estimations as exact as could really be expected, since this is a
fundamental ability that will be required all the more frequently as we progress in the
field of engineering.
