Objectives: The course aims to provide students:


Comprehensive knowledge of plant morphology
To recognize and identify different plant organs
Identify different floral and vegetative characteristics.
Learning the terminology used in angiosperm morphology
Familiarize with importance of morphology in understanding Botany.

Learning Outcomes: After the completion the student will have


Deep understanding of the morphology of angiosperms
Learners will be able to recognize and differentiate various parts of angiospermic plants.
Will be able to use morphological features for proper taxonomic descriptions
Gain skills in using botanical terminology for plant identifications
Recognize the significance of plant morphology in taxonomy
Will be well-prepared to explore the fascinating plants of angiosperms.

UNIT 1: Morphology of Root, Stem and Leaf 15 Hrs.


Plant morophology- introduction. Classification of plants on the basis of habit, habitat and life span. Root: types and
modifications; Stem: types and modifications. Stem branching and its types. Leaves: Parts of leaf- leaf base, leaf
lamina, leaf margin and leaf apex. Venation and its types. Phyllotaxy and its types. Simple and Compound leaf.

UNIT 2: Inflorescence and Morphology of the Flower 15 Hrs.


Inflorescence types and modifications. Description of Angiospermic flower: Parts of flower, flower symmetry,
perianth and aestivation. Androecium: stamen attachment, position, number and fusion; anther parts, types and
attachment; Gynoecium: parts of carpel, carpel fusion and number; ovary attachment and position. placentation and
its types

UNIT 3: Morphology of Fruit and Seed 15 Hrs.


Morphological features of Fruit, True, false and parthenocarpic fruits. Classification of fruits- Simple, aggregate and
composite fruits. Morphology of edible portion. Seeds and their types. Unique features of fruits and seeds meant for
their dispersal

UNIT 4: Importance of Morphology 15Hrs.


Scope and importance of morphology in plant sciences. Role of morphology in plant identification. Floral
characteristics used in taxonomic descriptions. Semi-technical description of a typical angiospermic plant. Floral
formula and floral diagram- concept and utility
Practical/Lab Course, (Credits=2). 60 Hrs.
1. Observe and identify different parts of angiospermic plant.
2. Examine various types of leaves based on their shapes.
3. Classify various types of leaves based on their margins.
4. To study leaves based on their venation pattern.
5. Examine leaf arrangement in different angiospermic plants.
6. Identify and characterize different types of inflorescences like racemose and cymose.
7. Analyze different floral structures and their arrangements.
8. Identify and comment upon different fruits types.
9. Study the structure of monocot and dicot seeds.
10. Examine different types of roots.
11. Learn about various stem modification.
12. Examine different type of placentation’s.
13. Practice drawing floral diagrams and writing floral formulas for few plants.
14. Conduct of two botanical trips to study natural flora
15. Preparation of herbarium with minimum 15 sheets.
