About Us
The Applied Mechanics department is
a full-fledged
interdisciplinary graduate research
Established in
department with excellent
experimental and computational
1959
facilities. This department works in
collaboration with industries and
government bodies like ISRO, DRDO
and DHI under the supervision of the
eminent faculty.

The Department focuses on

academic activities in three broad
areas viz., Solid Mechanics, Fluid
Mechanics and Biomedical Group.

The Department has played a major

role in contributing to the academic
community and society. The faculty
have won international recognition
for their industrial research and
sponsored projects. Some of the
facilities available in various
laboratories of this Department are
unique in the country.
 Message The Department of Applied Mechanics was established in 1959 and is one
of the oldest departments in IIT Madras. We are a truly interdisciplinary

department with a very strong research atmosphere and is the only
department in IIT Madras with an exclusive focus on post-graduate
students.

The Department has three broad groups – Biomedical Engineering, Fluid

Mechanics and Solid Mechanics. However, the background of the faculty
members are in as varied disciplines as Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace,
Chemical, Electrical, Biomedical and Applied Physics and reflect the
interdisciplinary nature of the Department. This is reflected on the
diverse research state-of-art laboratories that exist in the Department.

Our faculty are actively involved in research collaborations with

government research labs, industrial partners from India and abroad as
well as with universities in India and abroad and have taken up quite a
few multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional projects, large theme projects
as well as CII supported projects. Our faculty and research scholars
publish in leading peer reviewed international journals and are being
recognized for their academic and research contributions through awards
and membership in professional societies. Our faculty and alumni serve in
various committees of national importance.

 Academic Programmes
A four-semester program provides graduates with a
synergetic combination of industry-oriented course work
MTech Selection Criteria - GATE and research. The academic curriculum includes core
Duration - 2 Years courses and electives to develop a strong theoretical
base along with a final-year project and seminar. Degrees
offered are:
M.Tech Biomedical Engineering
M.Tech Computational and Experimental Mechanics

A PG level Research Program with a duration of about 2-
