Letter

LARPing
An Extracon 2021 Presentation
What do we mean by “Letter LARP”?
“a LARP played through the medium of written letters”

The terminology is still pretty fluid.

To some it means…

...any LARP where a significant portion of PC-PC (or PC-NPC) interaction is through some written medium

(includes emails, forum posts, other? But not texting or

Discord?)

...all interaction is through some written medium

...it must be through the postal service?

...it must take place over the course of weeks/months, not hours?

(Alternative term: “epistolary LARP”)

The Inevitable Question

Are
Letter LARPs
really LARPs?
The Inevitable Question
Yes.
No, really.

“LARP is a medium, an interactive and collaborative form

of storytelling in which participants take on personas other
than themselves and physically interact as those
personas in a shared, imagined diegesis, under the
guidance of a set of rules or mechanics governing those
interactions.”¹

The “Common” Letter LARP Format
● Snail mail Examples:
HEX (Hollow Earth Expedition)
● “sandbox” Incendium
● Easily grokked setting The Innsmouth Papers
● players create their own characters
● low/no overarching plot
Advantages of Letter LARPing
★ It’s very accessible!
○ Cost, timing, location
○ Even for people who are incarcerated
★ Social distancing friendly!
★ Players across the world can play together
★ Flexibility on level of engagement
★ Outlet for creativity (including forms of
creativity not often found in other formats of
LARP)

★ Checking your mailbox becomes super fun and exciting!
★ Did I mention the art ‘n crafts?
Drawbacks to Letter LARPing
★ It’s inaccessible!
○ To LARPers with vision impairment, hand/wrist mobility issues, eg arthritis, handwriting issues
★ Very low GM insight/control
○ Either a lot of work to keep track of everything, or else you have NO idea what players are
doing
★ Requires players to be self-starting/self-sufficient
★ Low level of buy-in
★ Inactivity in one player promotes inactivity in another
★ Some people find it anxiety-inducing
○ This format can end up kind of hanging over players’ heads, like a regular homework
assignment
★ It’s a fragile form of LARPing -- it can disintegrate pretty quickly
○ Because of reasons listed above
