Competitive Exhibits and Special Displays
11th to 13th October 2019 (Friday - Sunday)

Griffith Conference Centre, South Circular Road, Dublin 8

(between Leonard’s Corner and the National Boxing Stadium) ADMISSION
11am to 5pm (4pm Sunday) FREE
Welcome to STAMPA 2019
Autumn 2019 is well and truly established and winter beckons, but before we
leave the longer days behind Stampa has its annual three-day show in Griffith
College. Admission is FREE so please come and encourage your friends and
acquaintances to also attend so that it is a busy and successful event; they may
well re-ignite some old collecting interests or perhaps discover an interest in
collecting that they had not previously realised.
If you are already a collector, the exhibits on display may give you new ideas
for your own collections and, indeed, could incite you to try your hand at
exhibiting! We have digitised two iconic series of Irish stamp magazines and
they are now available to purchase on USB. For further information on this,
and to view our plans for a youth competition class next year, see page 15.
We have a number of dealers, bringing stock which you may enjoy exploring.
They could have just what you need to enhance your collection, start a new
one, or complete a future exhibit!
It is great to see that many of the exhibits from other years have been getting
high awards at foreign shows. Only last month they gained Gold, Large
Vermeil and Vermeil medals in London. All our exhibitors started from
nothing (some many years ago!) so why don't you give it a go? If you want to
know more, do have a chat at the Information / Stampa Sales stand. I hope you
enjoy your visit to Stampa.

CENTENARY OF THE FIRST NON-STOP TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT
by Brian Warren
On the morning of Saturday 15 June, I was at Dublin Airport to welcome Dave Bartlet
of the Canadian Aerophilatelic Society ("CAS") who was making a quick visit to Clifden
to mark the centenary of the first non-stop transatlantic flight. He had with him some
500 cards and covers to be cancelled in Clifden. He had flown from St. John's,
Newfoundland to Halifax and then on to Dublin on 14/15 June, thus recreating the
famous flight of 100 years ago by John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown.
All covers/cards had been cancelled in St. Johns with a special
postmark dated 14 June (illustrated right). Thanks to Canada
Post, he carried a quantity of the cards/covers in a mailbag
provided by Canada Post. We spent 2½ hours in Clifden P.O.
cancelling covers and cards. Also present were fellow collectors
Philip Kane and Paddy Lineen .
An Post had issued a single W stamp the previous Thursday (13
June). A first day of issue cancellation was available in Clifden on 13
June (same design as bureau postmark).
In addition, I had arranged with An Post for a
special postmark for the actual anniversary day of
15 June as shown. Originally, the intention was to have matching
14/15 June postmarks but the Canadian cancel was changed after the
Irish postmark was commissioned. As well as a FDC, An Post also
produced a quantity of postcards featuring the same cachet design as used on the FDC.
This was available at no charge from Clifden P.O.
Canada Post did issue a single stamp in 1969 to mark the 50th anniversary but there
was no centenary issue. However, in Canada, it is possible to design your own self-
adhesive "custom stamps" and have them officially printed in either sheets of 50 or
booklets of 12. Printing is arranged by Canada Post. The prices are reasonable with a
charge of approximately 22% over face for an international rate (C$2.65) booklet
which costs in total C$39 (plus local tax). Both the CAS and some private individuals/
dealers produced custom stamps printed by Lowe-Martin.
There were four CAS booklet stamps (2 x C$1.05 inland and 2 x C$2.65 airmail). The

4
first inland stamp (designated 'P') shows the pair of pilots and the aircraft, the second
depicts a boy with a model of the plane against a map of the Atlantic.
The first international rate stamp shows the same pilots and aircraft design as
used for the first P stamp. The second stamp shows the Vickers Vimy taking off
from St. John's.
The first of two other issues reproduced the special overprinted C$1.00 stamp
issue of Newfoundland released at the time of the original
flight. However the overprint was altered to include the
actual date 'June 14' and not just the year. This is a 'P' stamp
(C$1.05).
The second issue incorporated the 15c
stamp released in 1928 featuring the
Vickers Vimy with an added overprint
TRANS-ATLANTIC/AIR POST. This stamp
with such an overprint does not in fact
exist! This was an international rate stamp (C$2.65). Both of
these issues were produced in sheets and booklets. There are
two printings of the former (pale and dark orange, the latter
is shown above).
Various Canadian covers with similar designs were produced featuring the above
mentioned two stamps in various combinations (i) C$1.05; (ii) C$1.05 x 3; (iii)
C$2.65; (iv) C$1.05 & C$2.65); and (v) C2.65 plus Irish W. Item (i) had only the St.
John's cancel. Others had both the St. John's and at least one Clifden cancel and a
flight cachet (none illustrated).
A large number of other covers and cards were produced on both sides of the
Atlantic with Canada leading the way. I refer to a number of them below. As I
only have a sample of the covers not all are listed/ illustrated.
The first item illustrated is the CAS
card featuring the Canadian postmark
of St. John's (14 June) and both the
Clifden SID counter cancel and special
postmark (15 June) together with a
flight cachet (in red). The reverse of
the card shows the Vickers Vimy
taking off from St. John's. All
passengers on the transatlantic leg
from Halifax were presented with an
unstamped version of the CAS card
with the flight cachet.

5
The second item is a cover produced
by myself with both Clifden 15 June
postmarks and the Derrigimlagh
"Atlantic Way" cachet available at
Clifden P.O. This cachet illustrates
the marking stone which marks the
spot where the plane landed on the
morning of 15 June 1919.

Following our departure from the post office we visited the

nearby Abbeyglen Hotel which had arranged for the statue of
the pilots to be on view during June/July outside the premises.
Normally the statue is in situ near Heathrow Airport.

We then visited the landing site at Derrigimlagh

referred to above and finally the memorial erected in
1959 showing a tailfin.

Back in Clifden there was great activity during the day including the presence of
the Garda Band and a flyover by the Irish Aer Corps. A wreath laying ceremony
took place at the landing site to coincide with the 08.40 arrival time of 15 June
1919.
Following a meal in a local bar we then headed back to Dublin as Dave was
catching his return flight the next day. It was an action packed day to say the
least. Special thanks to Philip Kane for the photos and to Roseanne Burke for her
understanding and patience with the crazy collectors on the day.

“Wish you were here” – celebrating the postcard, 1869-2019
Postcards originated 150 years ago, with the first plain postcards going on sale in
post offices throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire on 1st October 1869. The
venture was successful and the idea was adopted in Britain and Ireland, with plain
postcards, having the stamp printed on them, being available in post offices in
1870; in 1872 privately printed cards were permitted.
The picture postcard, a natural development of the plain one, became common in
continental Europe from the 1880s . Scenes from fashionable holiday resorts began
to appear on postcards and many travellers bought a selection of cards, added a
line of greeting to the picture side and popped them into the nearest letter box.
The Irish Post Office took longer to authorise picture
postcards. Early pictures tended to be small vignettes,
sharing space with the message, since postal regulations
dictated that one side of the card had to be left blank for
the address and stamp. This “undivided back” was
retained until 1902, when the Post Office changed the
rules to allow the address and message to share one
side.
The change in the rules led to a huge increase in
postcard sales, with the Post Office in Ireland delivering
over 36 million in 1910. By the end of the Edwardian
era, demand was slowing and as the First World War
dragged on, the public mood shifted away from things
that were seen as rather frivolous in comparison with
the tragedies and suffering of war. The decline was gradual, however, and cards
still marked major public events: those depicting scenes from the 1916 rebellion in
Dublin are very collectable today.
Holiday cards from the seaside remained popular in the 1920s and 30s and in John
Hinde the Irish tourist industry found, in the 1960s, a man who had a genius for
portraying a land where the sky was always blue, the people innocent and the
scenery stunning. Today, although some people still delight in sending and
receiving postcards, technology has rendered largely obsolete a form of written
communication that was once so dominant.
The hobby of postcard collecting, however, is still alive and people now turn to the
cards of yesterday for understanding of a vanished world. Above all, we find in the
postcard evidence of our own unchanging need, as human beings, to communicate
with each other.
