WELDING PROBLEM SHEET

1. The figure shows a horizontal steel bar 3/8-in thick loaded in steady tension and welded to
a vertical support. Find the load F that will cause a shear stress of 20 kpsi in the throats of the
welds.

2. For the weldment of Prob.1 the electrode specified is E7010. For the electrode metal, what
is the allowable load on the weldment?

3. A 5/16-in steel bar is welded to a vertical support as shown in the figure. What is the shear
stress in the throat of the welds if the force F is 32 kip?

4. A 3/4 -in-thick steel bar, to be used as a beam, is welded to a vertical support by two fillet
welds as illustrated in figure bellow.
(a) Find the safe bending force F if the permissible shear stress in the welds is 20 kpsi.
(b) In part a you found a simple expression for F in terms of the allowable shear stress. Find the
allowable load if the electrode is E7010, the bar is hot-rolled 1020, and the support is hot-rolled
1015.

5. The permissible shear stress for the weldment illustrated is 140 MPa. Estimate the
load, F that will cause this stress in the weldment throat.

6. Find the maximum shear stress in the throat of the weld metal in the figure.

7. The figure shows a welded steel bracket loaded by a static force F. Estimate the factor
of safety if the allowable shear stress in the weld throat is 120 MPa.

8. Estimate the safe static load F for the weldment shown in the figure if an E6010
electrode is used and the design factor is to be 2. Use conventional analysis.

9. Perform an adequacy assessment of the statically loaded welded cantilever carrying 500 lbf
depicted in Fig. The cantilever is made of AISI 1018 HR (Sut = 58 kpsi and Sy = 32 kpsi.) steel
and welded with a 3/8-in fillet weld as shown in the figure. An E6010 (Sy = 50 kpsi, Sut = 62
kpsi.) electrode was used, and the design factor was 3.
(a) Use the conventional method for the weld metal.
(b) Use the conventional method for the attachment (cantilever) metal.
(c) Use a welding code for the weld metal.
