Kaikki tuntui niin epätodelliselta. Tämä hetki, jota hän oli ikävöinyt

ei sointunut hänen mielestään ollenkaan? Hän toivoi äkkiä
mielettömästi voivansa haavoittaa häntäkin, aiheuttaa hänellekin
sellaisia kärsimyksiä kuin tuolle toisellekin ja ärsyttää hänet
mielettömään ja hurjaan kiihkoon, joka ehkä sytyttäisi tuon
kahmalollisen palanutta tuhkaa, jota hän koetti puhaltamalla virittää
tuleen.
»Koska tuo rakkaus, josta puhut, tuo lapsellinen ihailu, joka lumosi
tytön sydämen, ei ollut tarpeeksi voimakas taistellakseen kohtaloa

Oli niin tyyni, että kaukaa kuului pienen kylän kirkonkellon ääni
selvästi ja hopeanheleästi, ja tienvieren ravintolasta kantautui heidän
korviinsa iloista naurua.
»Ilonka!»
Niin, Ilonka oli puhunut totta, että tämä oli unta, niin lumoavaa ja
