EA2312: Process Geomorphology & Hydrology

Module EA2312 will be assessed using two written reports in the first semester
(50%) and one report in the second semester (50%). This document explains the
requirements for the first semester report.

First Semester (Hydrology)

The first report – Taff flood hydrology (30%)
This is based on the field data you collected at the River Taff (or the provided dataset if
you were not in the field) and must include the following items:
1. a map showing the survey points and the dumpy level positions in a
coordinate system
2. a cross profile of the River Taff
3. a flow estimation of the River Taff
4. a discussion of your findings based on your data and figures
The report must be submitted through the Turnitin link on Learning Central, by noon of
Monday 27th November 2023.

Other notes:
 The report has a word-limit of 500 words.
 You are encouraged to use external data, information, or papers to support
your discussion, but it is optional. If you decide to do so, make sure all
references are properly cited. The references are not included in the 500-word
limit.
 In addition to providing a map, a cross profile, and an estimated discharge, you
should also describe these figures in the text. Make sure the report is coherent
and readable, rather than just a collection of figures.
 If you were in the field trip, you should include your group number (we have 4
groups in two days) and team number (each team has 2-3 members) at the start of
your report. If you were not in the field trip, make it clear in the report that you are
using the provided data.
 The survey data are shared within each team, and you may discuss the
data with your teammates. However, the report must be written
independently.
 If some of your survey points were not accessible in the field (e.g. the bottom of the
left bank) and have estimated elevations/positions, mark them in the figures and
explain the methods you used to estimate the values.
 Since we do not have a survey point in the water, we assume the lowest point in
the water is at one-third of water surface width from the left water line and has a
water level of 1.000 m (Figure1).

Rubric (Approximate, final approval not complete):

Second report - Flood susceptibility Map (20%)

This is based on satellite data and the use of GIS, Analytic Hierarchy Processes (AHP), and
multicriteria evaluation to generate a Flood Susceptibility Map, and must include the following
items:
1. Reclassified maps of the influencing factors
2. Criteria table
3. a flood susceptibility map
4. a discussion of your findings based on your data and figures
The report must be submitted through the Turnitin link on Learning Central, by noon of Friday 15th
December 2023.

Other notes:
 The report has a word limit of 400 words.

references are properly cited. The references are not included in the 400-word
