PORJECT PLANNING

CIVIL WORK:
The civil work can be divided in two categories:
1.Underground work: This includes the construction of tunnels and
underground.
2.Elevated work: This includes the construction of viaducts and elevated
station.
UNDERGROUND WORK:
On Jun 2, 2023, the Delhi Metro, started a tunnelling drive by the Tunnel
Boring Machine named Bhoomi from Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash on an
upcoming section, under the Phase 4 project, mentioned media reports. The
TBM was launched at Derawal Nagar metro station site on Metro Line 8, being
constructed from Janakpuri West to R K Ashram. The tunnel covers around
three kilometre, with depth varying between 12.4 m at Derawal Nagar metro
station to 25.9 m near the Najafgarh Drain. Therefore, the TBM will traverse
through varying geological levels underground, according to an official
statement by DMRC. In a first-of-its-kind exercise, the Delhi Metro is
equipping all the TBMs with the BEAM (Bore Tunneling Electrical Ahead
Monitoring) System, a non-intrusive ground predicting technique, in this phase.
The geotechnical and geophysical investigation work began in April 2022 for
Package DC05 of the 28.92-km stretch from Janakpuri West to RK Ashram on
the Delhi Metro Magenta Line. The Rs. 2481.50 crore contract of Package
DC05 was awarded to Afcons Infrastructure.
Under the Delhi Metro Phase 4 project, an underground section of 7.46-km will
connect a ramp north of Derawal Nagar with RK Ashram station. The section
will have six stations namely Derawal Nagar, Ghanta Ghar, Pulbangash
(interchange with Red Line), Sadar Bazar, Nabi Karim & Ramakrishna Ashram
Marg (interchange with Blue Line).
ELEVATED WORK:
The viaducts will be constructed using the pre-cast segmental construction
method. This method involves assembling pre-fabricated concrete segments to
form the elevated structure. The segments will be supported by columns and
beams, which will be embedded in the ground.
The elevated stations will be constructed using a variety of methods, depending
on the location and height of the station. Some stations will be constructed using
the elevated station box method, while others will be constructed using the truss
bridge method.
The elevated work on the Janakpuri to RK Ashram Metro Route is currently in
progress. The project team has completed the construction of a 4-km viaduct
from Majlis Park to Bhalswa Metro stations. The remaining viaducts and
elevated stations are expected to be completed by March 2026.
Here are some of the key challenges of the elevated work on the Janakpuri to
RK Ashram Metro Route:

Traffic management: The construction of the elevated viaducts and stations

will cause some disruption to traffic in the area. The project team is working
closely with the traffic police to develop a traffic management plan to minimize
disruption and ensure the safety of road users.

Utilities: The elevated viaducts and stations will need to be constructed over
several existing utilities, such as water pipes, sewer lines, and electrical cables.
The project team is working closely with the utility companies to ensure that the
construction work does not disrupt these utilities.

Safety: The safety of workers and the public is a top priority for the project
team. The project team has implemented several safety measures, such as the
use of personal protective equipment and safety barriers.
DESIGNING OF METRO STATIONS:
The Janakpuri to RK Ashram Metro Route is a proposed extension of the
Magenta Line under Phase 4 of the Delhi Metro. The route will be
approximately 28.92 km long and will have 22 stations. The route will pass
through dense residential and commercial areas in West and North Delhi, and
will provide direct connectivity to several important landmarks, including the
Sadar Bazaar wholesale market, the Azadpur Fruit and Vegetable Market, and
the RK Ashram Marg Inter-State Bus Terminal.
The design of the Janakpuri to RK Ashram Metro Route will need to take into
account a number of factors, including:

The alignment of the route: The route will need to be aligned in such a way as
to minimize disruption to existing infrastructure and to avoid environmentally
sensitive areas.

The type of construction: The route will be constructed using a combination of

underground and elevated sections. The choice of construction method will
depend on a number of factors, including the geological conditions of the area
and the availability of land.
The station design: The stations on the route will need to be designed to
accommodate a large number of passengers and to provide a safe and
comfortable travel experience. The stations will also need to be integrated with
other modes of transportation, such as buses and taxis.
Some of the key design considerations for the Janakpuri to RK Ashram Metro
Route include:

Alignment: The route will be aligned to minimize disruption to existing

infrastructure and to avoid environmentally sensitive areas. The route will also
be aligned to provide direct connectivity to several important landmarks.

Construction: The route will be constructed using a combination of

underground and elevated sections. The underground sections will be
constructed using the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) method. The elevated
sections will be constructed using the pre-cast segmental construction method.
Station design: The stations on the route will be designed to accommodate
many passengers and to provide a safe and comfortable travel experience. The
stations will be equipped with modern amenities, such as escalators, elevators,
and air conditioning. The stations will also be integrated with other modes of
transportation, such as buses and taxis.

All Phase 4 Metro stations in Delhi to have platform screen doors

All stations developed under the Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 expansion will be
equipped with platform screen doors (PSDs) to ensure passengers’ safety,
according to a Hindustan Times report. According to the DMRC, underground
stations on the Phase 4 metro lines will be equipped with full-height PSDs (2.15
metre), while elevated stations will have half-height PSDs.
Currently, half-height PSDs are installed on Metro stations developed during the
Phase 3 expansion — on the pink and magenta lines — and on six stations on
the Delhi Metro Yellow Line. Full-height PSDs are installed only on the Airport
Express Line.

Delhi Metro to introduce assistive listening systems

The DMRC plans to implement an Induction Loop System in some metro
stations, which aims to benefit individuals with hearing impairments and enable
them to listen to announcements with clarity, according to media reports. The
agency has floated a tender for installation of two systems – the Induction Loop
System and the Induction Loop Counter Talkback System.
The Induction Loop System will be installed in Central Secretariat, Rajiv
Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Mandi House, New Delhi, Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula
Kuan, Delhi Aerocity, Dwarka Sector 21 and IICC, among others. The Counter
Talkback System will be implemented at customer care centres in stations on
the Airport Line – New Delhi, Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan, Aerocity, IGI
Airport, Dwarka Sector 21 and IICC. The IGI Airport and IICC metro stations
will have two systems while three such systems will be installed in Dwarka
Sector 21 metro station.

Some of the challenges that may be faced in designing the Janakpuri to RK

Ashram Metro Route include:

Densely populated areas: The route passes through densely populated areas in
West and North Delhi. This will make it challenging to align the route in such a
way as to minimize disruption to existing infrastructure and to avoid congested
areas.

Underground construction: The underground sections of the route will be

constructed using the TBM method. This is a complex and challenging process,
and it will require careful planning and execution.
Integration with other modes of transportation: The stations on the route
will need to be integrated with other modes of transportation, such as buses and
taxis. This will be challenging, especially in densely populated areas.
