Testing for the symmetry :
1) Symmetry with respect to the 𝒚-axis (even function): the graph of the function 𝒇 is
symmetric with respect to the 𝒚-axis if satisfy the relation 𝒇(−𝒙) = 𝒇(𝒙)
2) Symmetry with respect to the origin (odd function): the graph of the function 𝒇 is
symmetric with respect to the origin if satisfy the relation 𝒇(−𝒙) = −𝒇(𝒙)
Notes:
8
Note : (1) constant term (a) is an even function because 𝒂 = 𝒂𝒙𝟎
2) The polynomial is an odd function : if all terms have odd power.
3) The polynomial is an even function : if all terms have even power.

because all powers are even then 𝒇(𝒙) is symmetric with respect to the 𝒚-axis.
Note : To sketch the graph it is enough to draw the portion corresponding to the positive
value of 𝒙. Then reflect this portion about the 𝒚-axis if the function is even .
Or reflect this portion about the origin if the function is odd.

For all 𝒙 in the domain of, then the graph of 𝒇 is symmetric with respect to the 𝒚 − 𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒔.
Answer: True because the function is even
47) If 𝒇 is a function then 𝒇(𝒂𝒙) = 𝒂𝒇(𝒙).
Answer: False because if 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙 + 𝟏 then 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙 + 𝟏 but 𝟑𝒇(𝒙) = 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟑
