Chapter 3, Sec 3.4: Chain Rule

Definition
A function m is a composite of functions f and g if

m(x) = f [g(x)]

The domain of m is the set of all numbers x such that x in the domain of g
and g(x) is in the domain of f

Example
If f (u) = eu and g(x) = −3x then

m(x) = f [g(x)] = e−3x

and

p(u) = g[f (u)] = −3eu

Chapter 3, Sec 3.4: Chain Rule
Theorem
If y = f (u) and u = g(x) define the composite function

y = m(x) = f [g(x)]
Then
dy dy du
= .
dx du dx
dy du
provided that du and dx exist. Or equivalently

m0 (x) = f 0 [g(x)]g 0 (x)

Example
If y = f (x) = e2x , then u = g(x) = 2x. Hence y = f (u) = eu

dy dy du
= .
dx du dx
= eu .2
= 2e2x

Sec 3.4: General Derivatives Rules

Theorem
1)
d
[f (x)]n = n[f (x)]n−1 f 0 (x)
dx
2)
d 1 0
ln[f (x)] = f (x)
dx f (x)
3)
d f (x)
e = ef (x) f 0 (x)
dx

Example
If f (x) = (3x4 − 5)4 . Hence

f 0 (x) = 4(3x4 − 5)3 .12x3 = 48x3 (3x4 − 5)3

Sec 3.4: General Derivatives Rules

Example
√ 1
If f (w) = 4 − w = (4 − w) 2 . Hence
1 −1 −1
f 0 (w) = (4 − w) 2 .(−1) = √
2 2 4−w

If f (x) = ln(x2 + 2x + 1). Thus

1
f 0 (x) = (2x + 2)
x2 + 2x + 1
3
If f (x) = ex +x
3
f 0 (x) = ex +x
(3x2 + 1)
