AIQS – Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors.
In 1940’s & 1950’s there were only State Institutes (ex Western Australia,
Queensland etc.).
AIQS was formally founded in 1951. But existing state institutes led by Queensland
formed a separate body named Institute of Quantity Surveyors (Aust) in 1953.
Both these institutes merged together by 1971.
Ever since members of AIQS consist of Quantity Surveyors, Construction
Economists, Cost Managers, Estimators, Schedulers, Value Managers and
Development Managers.

Requirements to be Fellow
1. FAIQS – Fellow members of the AIQS Member:
1. 10Years experience as
2. AAIQS / MAIQS – Associate / Member members of the AIQS Associate / Member
3. AIQS Affil. – Affiliate members of the AIQS 2. Currently or had held a Sr.
level position
4. CQS – Certified Quantity Surveyor 3. Demonstrated significant

 There are no post nominal for other grade. But can use as: profession beyond normal
employer requirements.

• Life Fellow, Fellow, Member or Associate, Affiliate members – 15 Hours
• However the Certified Quantity Surveyors are required to achieve additional 5 hours
of CPD. That’s mean the total CPD hours for Certified Quantity Surveyor – 20 Hours

Life Fellow is a grade of membership awarded to existing Fellow‐grade members for the
recognition of outstanding contributions to AIQS over an accumulated period of 20
years or more.

Logo can be used without qualification by a company or firm –
 at least one director or partner who is a corporate member of the AIQS, or

What is AIQS profession code of conduct

Why? Code of Professional Conduct

Any member breach the Code of Professional Conduct will be a professional


misconduct and will be investigated by AIQS in accordance to the complaints
handling & disciplinary procedure.
Code of Professional Conduct consist of Twelve Sections
Generally – Describes the purpose of the document
Definitions – Gives an elaboration on the Key words used in the COPC
Relations with Clients – How the member should deal with the Client
Conflict of Interest – Personal interest take precedence on the professional interest. The procedure in
dealing with it.
Impartiality – Should not be bias to any party
Members and Institute – how to deal with the AIQS members and the institute.
Relations with other Members – how to maintain the relationship with the other members.
Regulatory Registrations – Gives an elaboration on the regulatory registration.
Copyright – The copyrights of AIQS
Non‐compliance – how to deal with any non compliance to the Code of conduct due to a valid reason
(ex : due to the regulations at your work place)
Review – The duration specified for review of the Code of conduct.
Effective date – the date from then the Code of Conduct is effective.

1. Act with integrity, ethically, competence, good faith and without personal bias

Identify possible conflict of interest


When dealing with the client members interest should not conflict with the Client
If any instruction of a Client leads to a conflict of interest, avoid accepting it.
 Inform the client
 Encourage to make use of an independent professional service
 Can proceed with the service by
• A written acknowledgment from the client or confirmation from the
interest that the Client is aware about a Conflict of interest to proceed with
the services
• Member discloses there was an conflict of interest in any document
No payment to be accepted that effect the client relationship.

Complaints should be submitted to the Compliance Manager (CM) in written format

Analyze by CM and found there is lack of information

Ask provided more details from complainant by CM


In this situation compliance manager can take 3 actions about complaint. Those are
 Approved and proceed
 Reject
• Required information was not submitted by the complainant
• The complaint is a ongoing complaint
• The complaint is not within the last 3 years.
• Complaint about fees and payment.
 Suspend
• The complaint is in the court.
If CM is decided to proceed
CM has to inform to the member about the complaint

CM investigates the complaint and prepare the report


Form a Compliance Committee (CC)
CC Start the detail investigation on the complaint

Member has to respond the information and member has to submit the report of explanation about the complaint

CC review the report and set the date, time and location for the hearing about complaint and inform both party to
attend the hearing of complaint

In the hearing the member feels guilty then according to the AIQS, the member get the one or more or non
sanction and the decision report will be submitted to the CM
 Publicly rebuke the member
 Order to member to undertaking to abstain
 Consul the member
 Pay penalty (no more than 10,000)
 Order to undertake CPD
 Undertake necessary education
 Suspend the membership
Publish in Newspaper, journal
 Already there is a suspension, continue the suspension
 Advice member to take correct steps or on its website about the
 Advice member to pay the cost misconduct and decision

CM inform the both member and complaint about the decision.

The Chairman of the Panel generally gives a signal when you are in your 9th Min.
Maintain good eye contact at all times.
Avoid presenting about what is not in your application / CV

You can either be seated or standing when you do your presentation.
You can use presentation aid (Flip chart etc.)
If you ACE your presentation well, it means that you have passed your 1st Hurdle.
