ESG Brightens ESG, the UK’s largest independent glass processor,
has recently continued its work for Transport for
Up New London by supplying the glass for the 2nd phase of
the redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road tube
station.
Tottenham The station is currently undergoing a multi-billion
Court Road pound refit as part of the new Crossrail link due to
open in 2018. The entire station was closed at the
Station start of the project and is now reopening one section
at a time. Towards the end of 2014 the new ticket
office and Oxford Street entrance were reopened
and revealed a, Daniel Buren designed and ESG
manufactured, black and white artwork printed onto
glass.
Recently the new Center Point entrance has opened

white has been fused together with colour to create
striking geometrical shapes. ESG supplied over 150m²
of toughened laminated glass split over 200 pieces.
The coloured and black sections of the design were
digitally printed and UV cured to the glass. To ensure
maximum ink adhesion to the glass each panel
was treated to an ESG developed pre-print wash
treatment to remove any unseen dirt and oil. This
treatment enables all of the printing to achieve BSI:
ISO2409 adhesion standard.
The printing was carried out on 8mm toughened
low iron and then laminated, with a white Vanceva
interlayer to achieve the background, to create the
17.5mm toughened laminated final product. The final
design is already receiving plaudits from the public as
to how bright and modern the new look station is.

VS-1 Curtain
Speed of construction and superb aesthetics, coupled
with very high technical demands, were crucial in
meeting the exacting requirements of media giant Sky
Walling as it realised its ambition to create an industry leading
community engagement and educational facility at its

The 3,000m2 timber framed building, developed by
Sky, in conjunction with Mace, houses a wide variety
of educational and community facilities, including the
Sky Academy at which young people can use the power
of creativity, television and sport to develop new skills
and unlock their potential. BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated,
the building is designed in-line with Sky’s sustainability
strategy throughout, with a thermally superior fabric,
photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation and rainwater
harvesting just some of the integrated measures.
Working from initial design concepts by Arup Associates,
GLASSOLUTIONS was tasked with the £3m project to
detail design, manufacture and install the whole building
facade. The key feature of this is a centrepiece ground to
fourth storey staircase which would offer building users
uncluttered views across the adjacent and newer parts
of the Sky complex.
It was a facade design that would have challenged
any standard curtain walling system within a typical
timescale, let alone one which was half the time.

the suitability of VS-1 was immediately apparent. As
a mullion-only system which requires no mid-point
horizontal structural support for very large spans –
12.5m in this case – and no transoms, VS-1 met the
architects’ vision and ensured Sky could realise its
ambition to match eye-catching aesthetics with an open
internal environment benefitting from plenty of natural
light.
The Believe in Better Building features externally
mounted VS-1 mullions which have a distinctive ‘aerofoil’
shape to support the glazing along the full length of
the 51m staircase, over which it rises some 15m. These
are highly engineered aluminium extrusions which are
secured using stainless steel brackets at top and bottom
cantilevers from the building’s timber structure. These
ensure a secure attachment at the top of the structure
and at each floor level.
VS-1’s brackets hold the glass panels away from the
mullion to give it a ‘floating’ effect – these are then
siliconed at the top and bottom to give a flush finish.
Each double glazed sealed unit – many of which are
3.2m high – features 13.5mm Saint-Gobain Planidur heat
strengthened, laminated panes of glass on the interior
and 8mm Securit toughened, heat soak tested on the
exterior. The glass is Saint-Gobain’s COOL-LITE SKN165
II which was chosen to balance solar control and thermal

Optimistic Business Signals For 2016 Says Reynaers At
Home Survey
There is a feeling of positivity amongst architects regarding
the current business climate, according to Reynaers at Home’s
national survey of industry trends.
When asked “based on your level of business right now, do you
feel that your business is doing better than this time last year?”
73% of architect respondents answered yes and only 8% said no.
A further 20% said they were unsure. This compares to 67% of
respondents who felt positive about the business climate in the
previous Reynaers at Home survey in 2013.
Despite a general feeling of optimism, there are still a number
of industry annoyances that remain. Around a third said
compromising a design for planning was a source of frustration,
followed by a quarter of architects saying they didn’t have
enough time to think. This has risen since 2013, when 20% of
respondents said the same – implying that in the past three
years, time has become more stretched.
Having to scale a design concept to budget was pinpointed by
20%. One in 10 of respondents said that locating the materials
that they wanted to use within budget was particularly irritating
and 6% pointed a finger at tricky clients. Difficult builders and
contractors were named by 5%, while delivering projects within
agreed low fees due to the current market was also singled out

The façades of four buildings at Velocity Village – one of
the largest mixed-use developments in Yorkshire – have

Wicona’s WICTEC 50 SG structural glazing was used
on every elevation of the four buildings to replace the
original curtain walling which was no longer watertight,
and to improve the overall quality of each development.
The façade specification was to create a ‘like-for-
like’ frameless glass appearance to mirror the original
architectural design. This was achieved using the WICTEC
50 SG system which features a ‘toggle’ to retain the
glazed units within the infill channel. This option is
fast and efficient to install, and delivers a frameless
appearance as an alternative to silicone bonding. The
Wicona curtain walling was also semi-unitised, which
allowed the fabrication and assembly of the glazing
units off site for faster and more accurate installation
– an important benefit as the buildings were occupied
throughout the façade replacement. An area of the

element because these four buildings had such an

and versatile to meet the design criteria and integrated
well with the windows and doors. The WICTEC 50 SG
curtain walling has successfully and closely reflected
the appearance of the original buildings and we are
extremely happy with the end result. The glazing is all
performing well and each building looks fantastic. The
façade replacement has really helped to revitalise the
whole development. We would definitely use Wicona’s
systems again.”

The new School of Veterinary Science at Surrey University, described as
‘iconic’ by Professor Christopher Proudman, features high rise curtain

designed school comprises three complimentary and inter-related
buildings totalling around 9000 square metres; an academic building,
a veterinary clinical skills centre and a veterinary pathology facility.

A Culinary A spacious, light-filled kitchen with fabulous views over
the Cleveland Hills is the focus of this inspirational case
Masterpiece study. Designed by Heidi Westcar at Culinary Architecture
as part of a year-long, extensive property renovation, the
kitchen, its open-plan seating areas and boot room all use
Misty Carrara (4141) throughout, which was supplied and
fabricated by Dales of Thirsk.
The centrepiece of the home’s stunning kitchen – which
was relocated from one side of the manor house to the
other in order to maximise a southern aspect – is a vast,
L-shaped island. A bespoke build, Misty Carrara’s delicate
colouring sets off the island’s striking dark aubergine finish
perfectly. Two undermounted sinks have been set into the
island – one is Belfast style and one is a smaller, handily
placed, prep sink.
Heidi Westcar says, ‘My client wanted an elegant, bright
and light-filled kitchen space; the emphasis was very much
on space and maximising the light and views. As such, we
first implemented some very significant structural changes,
which included extending the length of the room, adding
a lantern roof and no less than 7 sets of beautiful French
doors.
‘The client was keen to avoid an overly ‘kitcheny kitchen’
and also wanted to achieve an easy movement between
the core of the kitchen and the informal seating areas,
which we created by opening up the rooms internally.

Commenting on her client’s choice of Misty Carrara, Heidi

and, as her objective was to create a very classic, elegant
kitchen space, thought it was a timeless and practical
choice.’
The kitchen’s island features a chamfered profile, whilst the
surrounding surfaces have been finished simply.
Heidi comments, ‘We deliberately wanted to give the
island’s profile a more detailed, decorative appearance, as
it seemed in keeping with the island’s status as a key focal
point within the kitchen. However, I was very conscious
that my client wanted to stay away from that ‘ornate look’,
so when it came to the profiles for the rest of the surfaces
we left them plain and simple – and as a result, the island
commands just the right amount of wow-factor.’
Heidi adds that the practicality and durability of
Caesarstone also influenced her client’s decision.

London’s Diespeker & Co has been working with terrazzo
since 1881. The company has recently ‘broken the mould’
by seamlessly combining the different forms of this

Standard terrazzo - Most often used for flooring and
staircases, standard terrazzo has been a staple of
concourses and public buildings everywhere for over 150
years. Diespeker’s range of standard terrazzo, imported
from Italy, now numbers an impressive 31 options. The
terrazzo is cut to the required size at Diespeker’s purpose-
built, designated factory in South East London, where
design detail such as cut outs, profile edges, grooves and
insets are added by a specialist team.
Hand cast bespoke terrazzo - Diespeker continues to use
traditional skills and tools in the production of exclusive
countertops, worktops, display plinths and other design-
led products using bespoke cement based terrazzo. The
process enables unusual items to be added to the mix, such
as broken chunks of marble sourced from slabs in their
factory yard, glass chippings or semi-precious stones. One
of their most demanding design challenges to date was
making a fully operational terrazzo fountain for Vico’s new
eaterie in Cambridge Circus. In startling bright blue, the mix
incorporates glass chippings imported from Canada and
brass rods cut into 5mm lengths, painstakingly bonded by
hand to the mould.
Resin based terrazzo - As a flooring option, resin based
terrazzo can facilitate a jointless finish, giving increased
aesthetic qualities for shops and galleries and, for
laboratories, improved hygiene. Unlike standard terrazzo,
resin based terrazzo does not require trowelling and rolling
as there are minimal air bubbles to remove. Where cement
based terrazzo at 20mm is relatively fragile, resin bonded to
aluminium for rigidity can be laid at 10mm, and oversized
lightweight countertops made by bonding to 7mm thick
honeycomb rigid aluminium sheets. Diespeker has also
grasped the potential of the material if used with moulds, as
with cement based terrazzo.

matching of terrazzo and resin based terrazzo during
the refurbishment of a Mayfair boutique, with a design
specification for resin based terrazzo flooring without
joints, and matching cantilevered stairs. The challenge was
to achieve an identical finish for flooring and stairs, which
was achieved by matching the resin based terrazzo flooring
with a complex cantilevered stair in cement based terrazzo.
This required extremely high production values to ensure a
seamless transition from flooring to stairs.
Mix and match - The demands of this project and the
response of Diespeker’s team resulted in a first: a unified
matching of resin and cement based terrazzo, using
specialist concrete work and mould making. This ‘mix and
match’ capacity opens up a whole new world of possibilities
for clients looking for a bespoke design for flooring, stairs
and displays.

The Blues Kitchen has opened in Brixton, London
offering a proven formula of late night live music,
authentic BBQ food and an amazingly large selection

Victorian styled ceramic tiles breathes new life into this
traditional art form and highlights the practicality of
ceramics in a bar environment.
The faience* tiled bar stretches 10 metres long and
is set off against a back-drop of white and blue brick
shaped ceramic tiles and amber dados, which define
arched recessed areas. The venue promotes its own
BBQ and drink specialities by writing on the glazed
tiles, which can easily be wiped clean and fresh adverts

The faience tiles at the front of the bar date back to the
1880’s in style and are hand-made at Craven Dunnill
Jackfield’s works up in Shropshire. There are five
different designs of tile which clad both the bar and five
floor-to-ceiling pillars. Each of the central, large green
tiles measure 245x 600mm and are convex, weighing
around 10kg each.

The deeply textured relief design dates to the late
19th century and features a repeating urn motif; these
tiles are bordered by four styles of decorative blue
and amber coloured dado tiles. The same designs are
featured on the 2.5m tall pillars, which are capped
with deep capital tiles, decorated with an acanthus leaf
design.
Craven Dunnill Jackfield employs a unique team
of expert ceramists, acclaimed for their specialist
knowledge and experience. The relief tiles are made
using hand carved plaster moulds and decorated with
metal oxide glazes, which craze upon firing to create
an authentic aged effect. For the large tiles, featuring
the urns, each required 200g of glaze to achieve the
desired depth of colour and took two people to dip the
pieces into a large vat of glaze. These were then gently
lifted and carefully stacked into the kilns and fired over
night at 1040 degrees Celsius.
The Blues Kitchen is part of the Colombo Group and
this is the third such venue to open. It is known for its
live Blues, Soul and Bluegrass music, Texan BBQ food
and wide range of bourbons and cocktails. The interior
style is eclectic, successfully combining Moroccan décor
with contemporary textiles, commemorative stained
glass windows and extensive reclaimed materials.

Eco-Friendly Companies Collaborate To Build Dream Home
A couple from Peebles, Scotland, have had their dream of an eco-
friendly bungalow with access for a wheel chair user turned into a
reality. Mr and Mrs Lamb had a very specific set of requirements
when they approached Eskgrove Homes for a new home. Mr
Lamb suffers from degenerating illness so they were looking for
a bungalow that could be wheelchair friendly. The thought of an
eco-friendly home was also very appealing to them. The couple
had already been impressed with Eskgrove homes whose strapline

used to building executive homes than bungalows.

Gent Helps Bield Housing & Care Take The
Lead In Fire Detection System Monitoring
Bield Housing and Care’s Bield Response24 alarm receiving centre (ARC) is one of the first
facilities of its kind to provide fire detection system monitoring and management from multiple
sites using Gent by Honeywell’s pioneering WINMAG software. Unwanted alarm activations
are a big problem and cause a great deal of disruption. In March 2015 the Scottish Fire and
Rescue Service announced that it will no longer silence or reset systems after a call out to
grouped housing developments, as doing so wipes any data that could provide reasons why it
was erroneously asked to attend.
For Bield Housing & Care this was a costly problem, meaning that when a system required
resetting a call had to be made to the fire detection company responsible for the site, and an
engineer had to drive to the location and physically press the silence and reset buttons on the
fire detection control panel. Glasgow based Rapid Fire Services was consulted to see if it could
suggest some ideas to address the issue.
The company’s Operations Manager, Neil Wilson, comments, ‘We have been a Gent by Honeywell approved system integrator for many
years, therefore, we knew that Gent’s innovative WINMAG graphics management system would solve this particular problem, while also
offering other advantageous features.’ Simple to set up and intuitive by design, WINMAG is an invaluable software tool for any size of
network that allows for complete management of the fire detection and alarm system from a central location. It integrates seamlessly with

SE Controls Africa, based in Durban, worked closely with the project’s fire and
engineering consultants WSP Consulting Engineers from the initial concept stage,
as well as ventilation contractors, Robertson Ventilation Industries, to develop the
combined high level smoke and natural ventilation solution for the building.
The system incorporates an NVLogiQ carbon dioxide sensor and environmental
monitor for natural ventilation, as well as a SHEVTEC smoke control panel and
10 SECO N 24 40 chain actuators, which automatically open and close the centre
pivot windows in the atrium to vent stale air or smoke from the building. In
normal operation, NVLogiQ sensor monitors the temperature, carbon dioxide
levels and relative humidity and signals the actuators to incrementally open or
close the windows, if the parameters go beyond preset points.
In the event of a fire, the SHEVTEC control panel takes a signal from the
building’s fire and smoke alarm system, which overrides the natural ventilation

Thermoblock Premieres In Leicester Square Project

The refurbishment of a landmark listed property on London’s
Leicester Square has seen Marmox Thermoblocks specified in very
large quantities for an unusual application. Number 48 Leicester
Square is being completely redeveloped behind the retained 1920s
stone façade. Pivotal to this radical reconstruction has been the need
to stabilize and strengthen the outer elevations which had been badly
weakened by previous alterations over the past century.

With a full facade retention structure in place and the basement

area framed by a retaining wall, the project team's solution involved
raising an internal inner blockwork wall using aerated concrete.
This is intended to improve the thermal performance of the exterior
elevations as well as their regularity and soundness, while taking up
the minimum interior space. As part of this, the project team elected
to make use of the Marmox Thermoblocks as a means of minimizing
heat loss at the critical floor wall junction.

The 600 mm long insulation units incorporate mini columns of high

strength, low conductivity concrete to support the load of the wall
above while the low lambda value insulation virtually eliminates the path for cold-bridging. They are laid using normal bricklaying mortar with
special Marmox Multibond sealant used to secure and seal the stepped joints while an integral layer of mesh on the upper and lower surfaces
offers a good mortar bond for block-laying to continue in the conventional manner. In total over 1000 of the 640X140X65 mm Thermoblocks
helped create a continuous horizontal thermal break beneath the new wall rising from the basement of 48 Leicester Square: ensuring it will meet

Mapei UK
A complete system of Mapei products has been
installed in the Monaghan Shopping Centre, North
East of Ireland. Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation Screed,
Helps The Epojet, Eporip, Planicrete, Topcem, Eco Prim T, Primer
G, Keraquick, Latex Plus, Mapetex, Ultracolor Plus and
Refurbishment Mapesil AC provided a series of systems to prepare
the substrate, refurbish the existing floor and install

Shopping
Mapei was asked by Ostick and Williams Architects
Belfast to provide a system of products for the
refurbishment of the shopping centre due to
Centre movement in the substrate resulting in cracking
and de-bonding of the existing porcelain tiles. The
products were supplied and installed by Armatile, and
included three main systems of Mapei products being
used to repair the substrate and install new tiling on
the 1,400m2 of retail and leisure space.
When all the existing tiles, decorative flooring and
residual adhesive was removed large cracks in the
screed were exposed. The first system of Mapei
products specified was to replace areas of screed.
This system of repair included Epojet, Eporip,
Planicrete and Topcem. Cracks in the existing screed
were repaired using Eporip and Epojet.
In several sections of the project a screed containing
the Mapei Topcem binder was installed to repair the
substrate using Planicrete to bond the new screed
to the existing screed and concrete substrate.The
second system of Mapei products installed was used
to smooth the total area to a tolerance of SR1 for the
installation of large format porcelain tiles. The screed
was primed with Eco Prim T then, where needed,

used to complete the installation of the Pamesa
Ikam ADZ tiles. Around 1,400m2 of 600x600mm tiles

Plus grey flexible grout with BioBlock® technology.
Mapetex, an anti-fracture membrane, which protects
tiled surfaces from substrate stresses was fixed using
a combination of Mapei’s high performance, flexible,
S1, rapid setting Keraquick adhesive incorporating
Latex Plus, an admixture that provides elasticity
and improves the deformability of the adhesive.
This combination of Keraquick adhesive and Latex
Plus admixture was continued to install the tiles
throughout the centre.
Mapei’s flexible, versatile, multi-purpose grout
Ultracolor Plus and their solvent-free, mould resistant
silicone sealant Mapesil AC was used to enhance the
overall aesthetics of the new facilities. The project
took nine months in total to complete.

97 Remmers Deliver Food Grade Flooring
Hygienic food grade flooring was required to the automated filling and
packaging lines at the relocated premises of Nature Delivered (www.
graze.com). A number of steel structure mezzanines were constructed.
Each mezzanine level required a complicated matrix of cross falls within
the sub-screed and a hard wearing, hygienic, slip-resistant resin floor
finish, with integral perimeter coving.
Due to the fast track nature of the build process, an epoxy damp-
proof membrane was required prior to installation of the resin finishes.
Remmers Haftfest Polymer was added to the sand/cement screed to
improve its performance characteristics, increasing compressive strength
and reducing the potential for drying shrinkage cracking. The screed was
laid to falls and subsequently primed with 2 coats of Epoxy MT100 damp-
proof membrane and topped with a nominal 8mm thick layer of Remmers

Movement accommodation is a serious consideration for
architects and installers when laying hard flooring. Heated
floors, large format tiles and difficult substrates all put extra
stress on tiled flooring. A major challenge in managing these
stresses occurs when a subfloor design creates a need for
surface movement joints to intersect.
Creating a required four-way junction is technically
demanding for an installer when on site, it is also time
consuming and expensive. Located where sub floor joints
cross and the surface joints intersect, the Cross Joint
is anchored within the adhesive bed, (using the exact
techniques as expected for intermediate movement joints
profiles). The distance between Cross Joints is linked using
intermediate movement joints. Cutting to size and length is
a simple matter of making straight cuts as required.
In comparison with forming a traditional four way junction,
the degree of skill, effort and time required is minimal.
A complete movement joint installation can be prepared and
be ready for the tiling work to commence in minutes.

The works were part of a complete renovation of a
Victorian town house in Bath and were carried out
by Bona Certified Contractor, TWF Bath Ltd, who
specialise in the restoration and fitting of traditional
wood floors. Before treatment, the TWF team filled
large gaps using reclaimed pine wedges and then
sanded the floor to 100 grit abrasives. Smaller gaps
were filled using Bona Mix & Fill, which is mixed
with sanding dust from the floor to ensure the filled
areas blend in with the rest of the surface. The floor
was then sanded using 120 grit abrasives before
the application of the first coat of Bona White. The
floor was then abraded using a Bona Scrad Pad to
remove any grain raising from the surface before the
application of the second coat.
To produce a highly durable, easy to maintain finish,
two coats of Bona Traffic HD lacquer were applied.
Traffic HD is Bona’s toughest lacquer. The very low

Hauraton Limited have introduced into the UK,
RECYFIX® MONOTEC, their new high capacity channel
system for the surface drainage of pavements,
bicycle routes, car/van parks and roadways in and
around residential, commercial and light industrial
areas where the channels need to have high lateral
strength, are capable of withstanding continuous
compressive loads and where ease of installation is a
major consideration.
The RECYFIX® MONOTEC one metre long channel
component is of a sturdy monolithic design where
the grating and the tongue and groove linking
system are integral to the channel moulding. The
whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable
polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to
daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions
to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV)
spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt.
Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the
PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient
carbon black as a stabiliser so that the structural
strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent
appearance is maintained.
MONOTEC channels are offered in two nominal
grating widths of 100 and 200mm, both suitable for
a loading category of up to Class D400. The 100mm
channels are available in three overall heights; 230,
280 and 380mm and provide channel cross-sections
of 190.5cm2, 245.5 cm2, and 355.5cm2 respectively.
The largest 200mm channel, which only weighs
16.2kg, has a cross-section of 746.1cm2 and so has an
attenuation volume in excess of 74 litres per meter.
The three sizes of 100mm channels can be arranged in
a step-fall arrangement with different channel heights
connected by special transition adaptors that ensure
the water drains away smoothly and quietly with the
increased flow velocity playing a considerable role in
cleaning the channel run. The step-fall arrangement
may be desirable where there is a high risk of silting
as the increased flow will help wash debris towards
the system’s Inspection/Trash Box.

In 2010 Hauraton introduced FIBRETEC®, a new design
of moulded slot grating on their RECYFIX® PRO range
of channels. This heelsafe grating has super smooth,
elliptical slot openings where the moulded bars have
slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside
edges.

Close to a thousand square metres of Tektalan boards,
manufactured by Heraklith and supplied by Marmox UK, have
been consumed in the conversion of former American Express
premises into a major new media centre for the University of
Brighton.
The panels were specified to improve the thermal and acoustic
performance, as well as the appearance of several soffit areas
within the buildings. These included the underside of two
structural concrete floors and an entrance canopy. Within
these spaces they help cut reverberation and present a smart,
textured surface. Tektalan represents a hybrid combination of
Marmox Heraklith Woodwool boards with rock mineral wool,
which enhances the product’s already impressive performance
characteristics.
The woodwool element provides the strength and rigidity together with the unique appearance and sound absorption. Then the layer of rock mineral wool
offers additional thermal and acoustic insulation while also being considered inherently non-combustible. In addition to an A2 fire classification, the boards
feature an interlocking joint to raise the fire resistance to a two-hour period.
Importantly the combination of rock mineral wool and woodwool remains vapour permeable. It is also recommend that an air gap is maintained behind the
boards, which are easily fixed, in order to achieve sound absorption values above 0.9 uW. The Tektalan boards were supplied in the standard 600 x 1200mm
