NUMBER: 21.0/110
ISSUED: February 2015
REVISED:
PRODUCT: Taurus 70
MODEL(S): Generator Set
Specifics: Power Generation and T70 Onshore units

SUBJECT: EXHAUST DIFFUSER CAN INTERFERE WITH ENCLOSURE

COLUMN DURING ENGINE REMOVAL

Type of Change: Product Information

Recommended
Compliance: Information

Purpose:
To resolve serviceability issues during engine and exhaust diffuser removal on Taurus 70 generator
sets.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
The below two issues were discovered during a service on a Taurus 70 generator set onshore
package:

Column Interference with Exhaust Diffuser

There is not enough clearance between the engine and aft enclosure column to remove the turbine
exhaust diffuser. Removal of the exhaust diffuser is critical for removal of the turbine.

Exhaust Diffuser Removal Tool Compatibility

The standard diffuser removal kit FT28624-101, which includes a right and left side assembly does
not allow much flexibility in rotating the diffuser during removal. The unenclosed kit FT28624-200,
which contains the single point tool was used instead.

While Package Engineering evaluates the best course of action to remove these issues from the
standard design, an interim solution for fielded units has been formulated

ACTION REQUIRED:

Risk mitigation practices must be in place before starting any work;

comply with all local and employer risk mitigation requirements.

Equipment and systems should complete normal shutdown cycles,

coast down to a complete stop, and complete post-lubrication cycles
before commencing work.

Hazardous energy isolation lock-out and tag-out (LOTO) is required.

Isolations and procedures for the turbomachinery package, ancillar-
ies, and associated equipment/systems must be appropriate to the
work being completed.

Hot surfaces may be present, exposing personnel to burn injury haz-

ards. Allow surfaces in the proximity of the work area to adequately
cool, removing the hazard.

Combustible gases or vapors may be present. Test for combustible

gases and vapors; if present, stop work until safe levels are achieved.
Fuel and ignition sources must be isolated and controlled via LOTO.

Solution for Column Interference with Exhaust Diffuser

NOTE
The appropriate structural analysis has been performed to ensure the fol-
lowing procedure is acceptable

a. Install Engine Handling Kit (EHK) A-frame at the appropriate location for the Turbine
Exhaust Diffuser removal.
b. Remove 3 of the 4 bolts on both the column-frame and column-enclosure interfaces and
rotate the column 90-degrees as shown. This should provide acceptable clearance for
the diffuser removal.

Figure 3 Rotated Column

NOTE
Structural analysis shows that column can be removed completely from
package while EHK is installed

c. Once diffuser has been removed, rotate column back to original location and replace
bolts.

Column must be installed in original orientation before Engine Han-

dling Kit (EHK) A-frame is removed from package

Solution for Exhaust Diffuser Removal Tool Compatibility

Utilize the unenclosed tool FT28624, which can be found in kit FT28624-200, for removal of
exhaust diffuser.

Please contact your local Solar District Office if you require more detailed information or more
in-depth assistance.
