Effect of chemical control:

• Herbicides can be poisonous to human beings.

• Beneficial organisms may be destroyed.

• Herbicides can pollute soil and ground water.

• Herbicides can contaminate livestock pasture thereby killing the animals that feed on
them.

• Some herbicides, when used can kill both good and unwanted plants and animals.

3d. Differentiate between pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides.

Pest can be defined simply as any living organism, plant or animal, which can cause damage

i. Piercing and sucking insect pests:

white flies, aphids, mealy bug, cotton stainer, thrips, moth, scale insects, capsids, green spider
mites etc. Any 2 @ 1 = 2marks

ii. Biting and chewing insect pests:

locusts, grasshoppers, termites, mantis, army worms, caterpillars (larva stage of butter flies),
crickets. Any 2 @ 1 = 2 marks

4c. State four ways pest affect crop production.

ANSWER

i. Heavy attack by pests may result in total crop failure.

ii. Infected seeds, crops, and vegetables have low market value.

iii. Pests reduce the quality of crops

iv. Pests eat up leaves of crops, thereby reducing the photosynthetic activity of the
plant.

v. They cause injury which may predispose crop to diseases attack.

vi. Infected seeds usually have low viability (germination) capacity.

vii. Some insects like aphids transmit diseases to crops.
