a) Given the following three position vectors A = (1, 3, 2), B = (3, 1, 0),

a) Point charges 𝑄1 = −2 nC and 𝑄2 = 3 nC are placed at 𝑟1(−2, 5, 1) and


𝑟2(3, −4, 6), respectively.

i. Determine the force on 𝑄2 (6 marks)


ii. Using an annotated sketch and a formula, show how the resultant
force F from the point charges 𝑄1 and 𝑄2 acts on a point charge 𝑄3
located at 𝑟3 can be obtained.

iii. Determine the electrical field strength E at the origin (5 marks)


iv. Determine the electric flux density D at the origin (2 marks)

b) A wire of 2 mm diameter and 4 × 107 S/m conductivity has 2 × 1029


free electrons per cubic meter when an electric field of 10 mV/m is
applied.
Given that the electronic charge 𝑒 = −1.6 𝑥 10−19 C, find

i. The current in the wire 𝐼 (3 marks)

c) An electric dipole of 100 𝒛̂ pC.m is located at the origin.

a) The plane z = 0 separates region 1 (𝑧 > 0), which is a dielectric


material with 𝜀𝑟 = 4, from region 2 (𝑧 < 0), which is also a dielectric
material with 𝜀𝑟 = 6.5.

electric field intensity 𝑬 = 𝑥𝑦𝑧x̂ + 𝑥 2 𝑦 ŷ + 𝑥 2z ẑ V/m. Find the force on
the charge at point P (2, 3, -1).

c) A magnetic core of uniform cross section 2 cm2 is connected to 240
V, 50 Hz power supply as shown in Figure 1.
Assume 𝑁1 = 200 turns,
i. Calculate the induced electromotive force (emf) V2 in the secondary
coil when 𝑁2 = 150 turns. (2 marks)

ii. How many turns the secondary coil needs to have to generate an
emf voltage of 120 V?

Q4.

a) Two point charges 𝑄1 = 2 nC and 𝑄2 = 4 nC are placed at (1, 0, 3) and


(-2, 1, 5), respectively.
i. Calculate the potential difference 𝑉𝐴𝐵 if A is (1, -2, 3) and B is (-1, 1, 2)

ii. If the amount of work necessary to move a charge Q from B to A is


100 µJ, find the value of Q.

b) An infinitely long conductor is placed along the z-axis. If the conductor


carries current I in the +z direction,
i. Find the magnetic field strength H at point (4, 3, 0) if I = 5 A
(8 marks)
ii. Using an annotated sketch, show how the magnitude and direction of
the magnetic field strength around an infinitely long round conductor
varies with distance from the wire.
