1. Determine the constant 𝐴 such that the differential equation

(𝐴𝑥 𝑦 + 2𝑦 )𝑑𝑥 + (𝑥 + 4𝑥𝑦)𝑑𝑦 = 0


is exact and solve the resulting exact equation.
Solve the following initial value problems:

i) + 𝑦 = 𝑥 𝑦 , 𝑦(2) = −1, 𝑥 > 0.


ii) (3𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 )𝑑𝑥 + (𝑥 + 𝑥𝑦)d𝑦 = 0, 𝑦(1) = −1 .

2. Find the orthogonal trajectory of the family 𝑦 = 𝑐 sin 𝑥 that passes through the point (2𝜋, 2). Also
find the family of oblique trajectory that intersects the family of circles 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 𝑐 at an angle .
Show that the family of confocal conics + = 1, where 𝑎 and 𝑏 are fixed constants and 𝜆 is
the parameter, is self orthogonal.

3. Show that the set {1, 𝑥, 𝑥 } of functions forms a basis for the solution set of a differential equation.
Also, find such a differential equation.

Find the general solution of the second order equation 𝑡 𝑦 + 2𝑡𝑦′ − 2𝑦 = 0 given that 𝑦 (𝑡) = 𝑡 is
a solution. Also solve the initial value problem

4. Find the general solution of the following differential equations:


i) −3 + 2𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 3𝑒 .
ii) −2 + 𝑦 = 𝑒 log 𝑥.
iii) 𝑥 −𝑥 − 3𝑦 = 𝑥 log 𝑥.
5. Find the partial differential equation arising from the equation 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 + 𝑧 = 1, where
𝑧 = 𝑧 (𝑥, 𝑦).
Find the general solution of the linear partial differential equation
(𝑦 + 𝑥𝑢)𝑝 − (𝑥 + 𝑦𝑢)𝑞 = 𝑥 – 𝑦 .

Using 𝑣 = ln 𝑢 and 𝑣 = 𝑓(𝑥) + 𝑔(𝑦), solve the equation

𝑦 𝑢 + 𝑥 𝑢 = (𝑥𝑦𝑢) , 𝑢(𝑥, 0) = 𝑒 .

6. Reduce the following equations to canonical form and hence find their solutions
i) 𝑢 – 𝑦𝑢 = 1 + 𝑢.
ii) 𝑦 𝑢 + (𝑥 + 𝑦)𝑢 + 𝑥 𝑢 = 0, 𝑦 ≠ 𝑥.
iii) 𝑢 – 4𝑢 + 4𝑢 = 0.

1. Describe, sketch and label the focus, vertex and directrix of the parabola
𝑦 + 2𝑦 + 8𝑥 − 31 = 0.

Find the centre, vertices, foci and ends of the minor axis of the ellipse
9𝑥 + 25𝑦 − 18𝑥 − 50𝑦 − 191 = 0
and sketch it.

2. Describe, sketch and label the centre, vertices, foci and the asymptote of the hyperbola
𝑥 − 4𝑦 + 4𝑥 + 8𝑦 − 4 = 0.

Find equation of the parabola that has vertex at point (2, 3), axis parallel to x-axis and
pass through the point (3, 5).

Also find equation of ellipse having ends of major axis (0, ±5 ) and foci (0, ±4 ).

3. Rotate the coordinate axes to remove the ‘xy’ term and identify the curve
𝑥 −4𝑥𝑦+𝑦 =6.
Sketch 𝑥 = 𝑦 in 3-space.

Find unit vector oppositely directed to a vector from a point (−3,2) to (1, −1) and also
find the vector component of 𝒗 = 2𝑖 − 𝑗 along and orthogonal to 𝒂 = 3𝑖 + 4𝑗 .

4. Find whether the vectors u, v and w lie in the same plane where u = 1,−2, 1,
v = 3, 0,−2, w = 5,−4, 0.

Find the distance from the point P(2, 1) to the line through (3,−2) and (6, 2).

Find the general equation of the sphere that has center at (0, 4, 3) and is passes through
the point (1,1,1).

5. Find the parametric equation of the line that is perpendicular to the lines

𝐿 : 𝑥 = 4𝑡, 𝑦 = 1 − 2𝑡, 𝑧 = 2 + 2𝑡
𝐿 : 𝑥 = 1 + 𝑡, 𝑦 = 1 − 𝑡, 𝑧 = −1 + 4𝑡

and passes through their point of intersection.

Find the distance between the point (2, 3, 6) and the plane 2𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 1.

Find the coordinates of the point where the line 𝐿: 𝑥 = 2 + 𝑡, 𝑦 = 1 − 2𝑡, 𝑧 = −8𝑡,
intersects the plane 3𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 6.

6. Define a Latin square. Give an example of a Latin square of order 4.

How do you find maxima and minima in any CAS? Write code for defining a function
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 − 3𝑥 + 1 and finding its maxima and minima.

5. Write the syntax to define a vector 𝑣 = (2, 5, 7, 1, 2, 0, 7, 9, 11) and to obtain the
following
(i) sort the vector v in ascending order,
(ii) extract the sixth element from vector v.
Maximize the function 2𝑥 + 𝑦 subject to the constraints 3 x  5 y  15 and 6 x  2 y  24.

6. Generate a square matrix of order 5 with the elements 𝑎 = 7𝑖 + 2𝑗, with 𝑖, 𝑗 =


1,2,3,4,5. Find its eigenvalues with the help of its characteristic polynomial. Also find
eigenvectors corresponding to each eigenvalue.
Write the syntax to obtain a square matrix of order 10 with 0 as the diagonal elements, 2
below the diagonal and 1 above the diagonal. Is the matrix singular? Give reason for the
same.
