Whiteboard Casual: A

New Script
The power of clear, confident handwriting can not be
overstated. I have found that time and time again, clear,
good-looking handwriting on whiteboards will amplify and
underscore your message more than any fancy tricks or
embellishments can.

Similar to the spoken word, it's not just what you say, but
how you say it. The same applies to the written word,
especially if you have an audience or work in a team.

While we understand the importance of clear, clean

handwriting, it's also a reality that you probably last
practiced your writing in 1st grade. So, if you currently are
not 100% comfortable with your script, that's completely
understandable! What you learned back in school just
doesn't really map to the day-to-day work on boards.

The good news is: We're not going to try to "fix" your current
script! Instead, you will learn a completely new way to write
that is optimized for whiteboards: It's simpler, faster and
more legible than the manuscripts and cursive you've relied
on so far.

This new script – called "Whiteboard Casual" – is based on

the classic sign-painting brush-scripts. It works well from tiny
annotations to large title lettering!
Whiteboard Casual – Overview
Exercise: Warmup
5 minutes
Before we get started on learning the actual script, I
want you to warm up your wrist and arms with these
simple exercises.

Copy the worksheet to the left to your best ability. I’ve

used help-lines for each row.

Aim to use your arm’s motion to draw and rely less on

only your wrist. This will allow you to draw letters in
different sizes confidently.

Aim to keep the strokes neat and regular.

Exercise: Alphabet
“Copy and Paste”
In this exercise I want you to get comfortable with the
basic alphabet and its strokes.

Note that a lot of the strokes start at the top and pull
down-ward. There are no upward strokes in this script.

Similar to the warm-up exercises, I want you to learn to

draw the letters from your arms more than from just your
wrist. To maintain control, I often have my wrist touch or
pinky finger touch the board.

For each letter, make a few copies, then move on.

Don’t yet get stuck on letters. I want you to complete a

full alphabet before you start to “fine-tune” individual
letters.

Once you’ve completed one full alphabet, go for a next

round.
… continue the exercise from above.

Note that you will have to learn how to rotate the pen in
your hand as you draw the letters to maintain the thick
line throughout.

Take as much time as you need for this exercise and fill
as many pages as you have to until you feel more
confident in all letters.

Every minute you spend with this will amplify your ability
to quickly and boldly write when you’re on a whiteboard
by yourself and others.
Exercise: Play With
Music
10 minutes
Now, just repeating the alphabet is just the beginning.

In this exercise I want you to play with the script you just
learned and begin to apply it while thinking out loud.

The challenge for you is to brainstorm your favorite

bands and musicians and create a word-cloud like the
one on the right.

I find learning a new hard-skill like a script is easier when

you think of things you love. So, your favorite bands are
your challenge today.

As you get more comfortable during this exercise, I want

you to pick up speed. This will train you to write clearly
quickly.

Experiment with sizes, line-breaks and thickness to

create your unique all-star music line-up.

I want you to think on your feet, so let’s dance!

Exercise: Text Boxes
5 minutes
Often you’ll find yourself wanting to highlight or capture a
single thought or word in a box.

In this exercise I want you to copy the examples to the

right a few times each. They’re the basic text-blocks that
you’ll be able to use over and over again.

Note that you want to get into the habit of writing text
first and only then giving it a frame of your choice.

Make sure that the frame doesn’t over-power the

content. I usually aim to use the thinner edge of my pen
for bounding boxes as demonstrated here.
Exercise: Play With
Food
10 minutes
Similar to learning the script, I want you to start thinking
on your feet in regards to bounding boxes.

The challenge here is to brainstorm your favorite food

and apply the basic boxes you learned earlier.

The boxes don’t have to be fancy. If anything I want you

to learn to quickly apply a bounding box and learn how
to navigate a board when there are many boxes already.

Aim to start at a normal pace but increase your writing/

drawing speed throughout the exercise. This will give
you the training and confidence to think on your feet
when you’re on the board solving problems!
