Mole to Grams, Grams to Moles Conversions:

There are three definitions (equalities) of mole. They are:
1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 particles
1 mole = molar mass , (could be atomic mass from periodic table or molecular mass of
a compound or formula mass of an ionic compound.)
1 mole = 22.4 L of a gas at STP (You do not need to worry about this yet).
To convert the mass ( grams) of a substance into moles or vice versa we use the triangle below:

Mass – Mole Conversions: (Hint : Use the periodic table for finding the molar masses).
1. How many moles are in 15 grams of lithium?

2. How many moles are in 98.3 grams of aluminum hydroxide, Al(OH) 3?

1
3.

Mole – Mass Conversions:

1. How many grams are in 3.3 moles of potassium sulfide, K2S?

2. How many grams are in 11.9 moles of chromium?

2
3. A.

B.

To convert the mass ( grams) of a substance into atoms or vice versa we use :

Mass – Atoms Conversions: (Hint : Use the periodic table for finding the molar masses).
4. How many atoms are in each of the following ?
a) 55.2 g Li

b) 0.230 g Pb

c) Find the mass in grams of 2.00 x 1023 molecules of F2.

d) Determine the number of molecules of 14 g of nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

a) 6.02 x 10 24 atoms Mn

b) 1.50 x 10 15 atoms N

Challenge:
1. How many molecules are in 38.6 grams of aluminum hydroxide, Al(OH) 3?

2. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is 160 times sweeter than sucrose (table sugar)
when dissolved in water. The molecular formula of aspartame is C14H18N2O5 .

a) Calculate the molar mass of aspartame.

b) How many moles are in 10.5 g of aspartame?

c) How many molecules are in 10.5 g of aspartame?

e) How many atoms of nitrogen are in 1.2 grams of aspartame?
