Unit 1: The Concept of Curriculum

Introductory Activity

Sketch noting

Sketch a picture or symbol that represents what you have learned in the last two years as pre-
service teachers... Remember, it’s not about the quality of the art – it’s about how your drawing
prompts you to visualize your understanding and look at their learning from a different
perspective. Connect your sketch with colored lines signifying knowledge, skills and values.

Now reflect: Will this be enough to make you an excellent teacher?

From what I have drawn, I could say that this is not enough to make me an excellent
teacher. Why? Because uniqueness of every learners doesn’t stop at the moment you thought.
As, we change students to mold we should expect that we should think of new ways to make
them learn too. We should not tuck or stick with one plan. As a teacher it require broad
expertise, patience and creativity to catch everyone inside the classroom.
1.1. Definition of Curriculum

From your experience, how do you define the term ‘curriculum’?

-From my experience, I can define curriculum as a field of food that is being fed to students. It
is a guide that educators can use or being use for better teaching and learning that every
student can grasp knowledge and can apply for their daily living.

Self-Assessment 1

The head teacher of a barrio school decided to change the school timetable. The new timetable
is shown below. Study it and answer the questions that follow it.

1. Why do you think there was poor attendance on Wednesday?

-I think there was poor attendance on Wednesday because that day is tiring; from morning
session till afternoon it covers or need physical aspect of students. Maybe they fell exhausted
upon seeing their subject.

2. Why do you think there was good attendance on Thursday?

- There was a good attendance on Thursday because I think the subjects that the students will
be attending needs more discussion. Thus, from teachers to students have interactions that can
boost interest of everyone.

3. If parents started withdrawing their children, saying that there was little learning
going on in this school, what do you think is their interpretation of curriculum?

- If parents started withdrawing their children, because they say there was little learning in the
school. I think their interpretation of curriculum is about teachers just teaching students with
what should be. It is just sending their children at school to learn new things and afterwards
receive a diploma and find a job.

Self-Assessment 2

1. What is your own definition of a curriculum? Do you have a traditional view of

a curriculum, a progressive view or both? Explain your view based on your
definition.

-Curriculum is a standards-based sequence of planned experiences where students practice

and achieve proficiency in content and applied learning skills. It is the guide to educators as
to students’ access rigorous academic experiences.

For me, progressive curriculum enforces students to learn things by themselves with
teacher only acting as an active participant rather than an intervening individual and mostly
the non-existence of written exams and memorization are the factors found within a
progressive curriculum. The ability to discover and solve through experiments and actual
dealing with the problem are the main teaching methods because progressivist believes that
individuality, progress and change are fundamental to one’s education.

Self-Reflect

Pick up a daily newspaper and read, today's headline. Choose one and reflect on this headline
that relates on the Curriculum and to your becoming a curricularist. Write your answer in at
least two paragraphs.

“Alternative learning under new normal still highly dependent on teachers-DepEd”

According to the news amidst pandemic, teachers are highly needed for success new
normal distance learning. In my opinion, the curriculum that we have are the shaped from
traditional points view of scholars. With the fact that teachers rely on the written documents
such as syllabus, course study, books and references in order to cpnvey knowledge to students
and to the fundaments of intelligence that have cleary point of traditional way.

Other than that due to the virus, learners are doing any sirect experience such as
executing learning on their own and by real- life situation that become more difficult. As a
future teacher and curricularist in this situation I think it is best to apply all of your efforts and
process of being a 21st century skilled teacher in order to provide good quality of education to
every learner that deserves to be taught and mold.

Self-Assessment 3

experience derived from the senses.

c. Pragmatist - a person who is guided more by practical considerations than by ideals.

d. Existentialist- a person that believes in the existence of a person as free and responsible
agent determining their own development through acts and will.

Self-Assessment 4

-The type of document that usually reflects these elements of curriculum is lesson plan.
2. Who usually makes use of these documents?

- People who usually use this type of documents are teachers and other people who work
related to teaching.

3. Where is it usually used?

- This document is usually and being use in teaching and imparting knowledge in students. It is
use in planning what to give and fed to those who wanted to learn.

4. Look for a sample of this document and identify the elements found in it. Check this link as

1. Make a sentence that has singular

subject with singular verb.
2. Construct an intervening phrase that
the verb agrees only with the subject. (Student answer)
3. Make a sentence that has separate unit
of subject that takes plural verb.
4. Make a sentence using the words some,
most and any in a quantity form.
Generalization

Singular subjects take singular verbs; plural

subjects take plural verb.

The verb agrees only to it’s subject,

intervening words do not affect the number of
the subject. (Students answer)

Some, all, most, and any are singular when

they refer to a number.

A compound subject joined by and takes plural

verb. When the compound subject refers to
one unit, it takes singular verb.
Application

As a pair activity, make a comic strip. The content or the dialogue of the said comic is a
sentences that follows the four rules being discussed in the class. Afterwards, on the clean
sheet piece of paper explain what are your insights about the Subject-Verb Agreement.

Evaluation

If the sentence is grammatically correct, write C before the number. If there is an error in
Subject-Verb Agreement, write the correct form of the verb.

1. The date and the place of the photoshoot has been set.
2. Everyone on these islands are very approachable.
3. On the stage, Jessa sings.
4. The child looks at the picture inside the room.
5. Now many people travel on jets.

Assignment

1. Write example for each of the first four rules of the Subject-Verb Agreement.

Practice Activity 2

1. Tag the Person. Choose one foundational theorist who contributed to curriculum
development. Write his biography in not more than 3 short sized Bond paper, Tahoma 11,
double spaced. You may include people not mentioned in the book of Dr. Bilbao.

Name: Hilda Taba

Born: December 7, 1902, Kooraste, Russian Empire [now Estonia].

Died: 6 July 1967, San Francisco, California, United States

Education: Teachers College, Columbia University, Bryn Mawr College, University of Tartu

Hilda Taba was an architect, a curriculum theorist, a curriculum reformer, and a teacher

educator. Taba was born in the small village of Kooraste, Estonia. Her mother's name was Liisa
Leht, and her father was a schoolmaster whose name was Robert Taba. Hilda Taba began her

education at the Kanepi Parish School.

She contributed to the theoretical and pedagogical foundations of concept

development and critical thinking in social studies curriculum and helped to lay the

foundations of education for diverse student populations. Also, she believed that students

make generalizations only after data are organized. She believed that students can be

led toward making generalizations through concept development and concept attainment

strategies.

In addition, Taba Method of Curriculum Development. Hilda Taba created a multi-

purpose teaching model that utilizes the use of multiple processes: listing, grouping,

labeling, regrouping, and synthesizing. She believe that teachers are aware of the students’

needs hence they should be the one to develop the curriculum.

b. knowledge is based on evidence?

-Empiricists

c. teachers are sources of ideas and information?

-Pragmatist

d. learners must experience knowledge?

-Rationalists

• The four elements that make up a curriculum are surrounded by a context that affects
different aspects of the elements. Name the components of the context in which a curriculum is
designed and implemented.
The four elements that make up a curriculum are the purpose, content or subject
matter, methods or learning experiences and evaluation. It is designed and implemented by
which the Purpose has a goal or aims; Subject Matter has a specific learning that should be
taught and integrated; Procedure that makes the lesson process more organized; and
Evaluation where the lessons and performances has been graded and judged.

• Consider the subjects offered by your school. Which ones would appeal to those
who have a pragmatic or existential view of the world?

-Considering the subjects offered by our school, the one that appeal to those who have
pragmatic or existential view of the world is Practical Research, The Contemporary World and
Child and Adolescent Learning Theories as these requires better understanding, discoveries and
problem solving.

• Identify which among the foundations of curriculum, has influenced what you
have learned in school? Cite relevant experiences that will illustrate your answer.

-The foundations of curriculum that has influenced what I have learned in school is the
Philosophical Foundations, as it has 4 philosophies about education that each of one suited in
different type of teaching and imparting knowledge.

Reflection.

Do the same as the instruction on the Practice Activity

1. Consider the education system in the Philippines. On which curriculum

perspective would you say your system is based?

- Education is the most important thing in human lives as the future depends on this.
Considering the Philippine Education System, the curriculum perspective that the system is
based; for me are all four types. There are different minds, learners or individuals that need to
be learn, so to cope up their uniqueness it should have different perspective. If the Education
systems just impose one of the curriculum perspectives without others then it is just 2/3 of the
class that can absorb what is being fed. Education is all about the quality of the services and
equality to every learner.

2 . Who decides on the content, methods, purpose and evaluation of our country’s
curriculum?

- The journey of being in school should be interesting, it should be memorable and to be able
to give knowledge that learners could bring till they’re living in this world. In order to have a
better quality of education; Teachers are the one who decides on the content, methods,
purpose and evaluation of our country’s curriculum

3. Identify which among the foundations of curriculum, has influenced what you
have learned in school as a college student?
- Among the foundations of curriculum, the one that influenced what I have learned in school
as a college student is the Philosophical Foundations. As time goes by, I had realized that our
institution set a goal where it helps us ; students to determine what truly the purpose of
education in our life like on us, as education students.

3. Which groups of people may benefit from feedback generated by curriculum

evaluation? Explain how any three groups benefit from the evaluation.

The group of people that can benefit from feedback generated by curriculum evaluation are
the students, teachers, and the school. The students are the target of this new learning
process that was implemented on their school as their new curriculum. School is a place for
those who wants to learn to become a successful in the future using their learnings and
experiences. Upon sending the children at school can leads to successful life. Evaluation has a
great help when it comes to the academic performance of the students because the teachers
can thought of an idea about their learners. Also, evaluation can help the teachers to identify
the area of extra attention and help because of low academic performance and low self-
esteem.

UNIT 2: Types of Curricula

Introductory Activity
The Teacher Skills Checklist

Answer The Teacher Skills Checklist based on a synthesis of the research that investigated
attributes or qualities of effective teachers. This checklist is designed to help you identify those
areas of teaching and learning you feel you have achieved some degree of proficiency (P) and
those areas in which you feel you need to further develop (D). Prioritize the top three teaching
behaviors you feel you need to improve.

How do you find the checklist? Do you think it can guide you to become a good curricularist?
Are all teachers curricularists?

Self-Assessment 1

1. Which type of assessment covers:

• knowledge from sources outside the official curriculum?

- Formal Curriculum

 the contents of the official syllabuses?

Self-Assessment 2

1. Think of the formal curriculum offered at your school and lists its characteristics.

 - Chronologically a graded system.

 Full time education with uniform and oriented subjects.
 Rules and regulations are strictly posted to be followed by the students and teachers
 Classes are planned with objectives and it includes outside activities.
 A systematic and hierarchical education system.

2. Look for the meaning of these term related to curriculum null curriculum, explicit
curriculum, operational curriculum, resource unit, curriculum planning, curriculum
laboratory, course of study, curriculum guide, teacher’s guide, learner’s manual.

null curriculum- refers to what students do not have the opportunity to learn. In this case,
students are learning something based on the absence of certain experiences, interactions, and
discourses in the classroom

explicit curriculum- is one that has been carefully designed, pilot tested by teachers
and. students, and then presented or published in the form of curriculum materials for teachers
and. learners.

operational curriculum- aka Taught Curriculum; taking the students into consideration, they
decide how to achieve the intended learning outcomes. They decide the distribution of time to a
particular activity/content.

resource unit- a systematic. and comprehensive survey, analysis, and organization of

understood.

curriculum guide- A document or set of documents usually providing guidance for teachers
and instructors on approaches and procedures for a successful planning and implementation of
the curriculum at school, local or national level.

teacher’s guide- it is designed to show teachers the primary tasks they will be using in ASAP
on a regular basis. There may be other rights that schools assigns to teachers, and there are
other ways to accomplish some of these functions.

learner’s manual- a small book that gives useful information about something : handbook.

Self-Assessment 3

Identify what type of teacher as a curricularist is being described.

1. Implements the Curriculum

2. Initiates the Curriculum

3. Plans the Curriculum

4. Writes the Curriculum

5. Evaluates the Curriculum

6. Knows the Curriculum

7. Evaluates the Curriculum

8. Innovates the Curriculum

Practice Activity

From the hidden curriculum, I want my students to learn the real values and virtues that
a person should possess. We should bear in mind that intelligence are useless if one does not
possess values and virtues that being required. Having a good heart and attitude is better than
medals and certificates. People who have everything they want, don’t know how to help people
who are way far from their status in life. It is very important to learn this type of lesson in
which students are guided and disciplined all along the way. The most important thing here is
that they are possessing the proper behavior and attitude than being a heir.

Reflection

Please reflect on what you have learned in this unit and see whether you can:

• differentiate the types of curricula,

• identify the core curriculum at your school, and

• explain to colleagues the characteristics of each type of curriculum.

In this unit, I learned that the difference between the types of curricula are: Formal
Official Curriculum represents the presented, formal learning experiences as per the objectives
of the curriculum or syllabus. Actual Curriculum represents the learning experiences students
acquire and attitude that cannot be categorized in the formal or informal curriculum. And,
Hidden Curriculum represents what students actually learn from both the formal and hidden
curricula. In 1995, the Commission on Higher Education has identified the College of Education
as one of the Centers of Excellence in Teacher Education in the country and has retained this
eminent title up to the present.

The characteristics of each type if curricula are the following: Formal Official Curriculum,
is the formal learning experiences of the students in and outside of the classroom that is based
on the objectives of the curriculum or syllabus. It means that in formal curriculum we are
learning by following the syllabus that is being set by those in higher position. Informal
Curriculum explains that the teachers or facilitators may not adhere to the presented formal
curriculum but can include other aspects of knowledge derived from other sources that they
know that it can help trough the progress of the learners. Actual Curriculum means that
learning experience is being acquired where the students and the teachers are having actual
lessons both formal and informal curricula. And, the Hidden curriculum or Collateral curriculum
reflects on the behavior, perspectives, and values that students learnt at school. However, it is
an unofficial or unwritten type of curriculum.

Unit Test

1. What can students learn from the hidden curriculum?

In hidden curriculum, the students can learn on how to demonstrate values,
proper behavior, and perspectives. It is an unofficial and unwritten type of curriculum by
which students can learn and remember.
2. Which learning experiences can you classify under the extra-curriculum in your school?
Students can learn through activities as they will be using their self. E example of
extra-curriculum may include sports, declamation, dancing, and other types of talents
you have that suits in any activities offered by the school and the teachers will serve as
their coach, trainer or mentor.
