In conversations, we can phrase things in a direct, active way, or in an indirect, passive way.

Active, Informal Voice

In informal situations, such as speaking with people we know well, a more relaxed and
casual speaking style is used. Slang words and abbreviations (such as 'can't' or 'I'd') are
acceptable.

?
When speaking informally, we use an active voice.

?
Active voice: subject - verb - object

?? ? ?
• Starts with the subject ('I')
• Direct
Example: I bought a chokky. • Use of slang (‘chokky’)
• Used in conversation with
friends and family

Passive, formal voice

Formal language is used for more official purposes, such as when we are speaking with
people we do not know well, or when giving a presentation at school. Slang words and
abbreviations should not be used, and correct grammar must be applied.

?? ? ?
When speaking formally, we use a passive voice.
Passive voice: object - verb - subject
• Starts with object
('chocolate bar')
• No slang
