The CONTEC - Authoring Subcommittee provides guidance on the interpretation of this Standard when questions arise regarding its contents. The Department of PETROBRAS that uses this Standard is responsible for adopting and applying the clauses thereof. Technical Requirement: a provision established as the most adequate and which shall be used strictly in accordance with this Standard. If a decision is taken not to follow the requirement (non-conformity to this Standard) it shall be based on well-founded economic and management reasons, and be approved and registered by the Department of PETROBRAS that uses this Standard. It is characterized by the verb forms shall, it is necessary..., is required to..., it is required that..., is to..., has to..., only ... is permitted, and other equivalent expressions having an imperative nature. Recommended Practice: a provision that may be adopted under the conditions of this Standard, but which admits (and draws attention to) the possibility of there being a more adequate alternative (not written in this Standard) to the particular application. The alternative adopted shall be approved and registered by the Department of PETROBRAS that uses this Standard. It is characterized by the verbal form should and equivalent expressions such as it is recommended that... and ought to... (verbs of a nonmandatory nature). It is indicated by the expression: [Recommended Practice]. Copies of the registered non-conformities to this Standard that may contribute to the improvement thereof shall be submitted to the CONTEC - Authoring Subcommittee.

Industrial Safety

Proposed revisions to this Standard shall be submitted to the CONTEC Authoring Subcommittee, indicating the alphanumeric identification and revision of the Standard, the clause(s) to be revised, the proposed text, and technical/economic justification for revision. The proposals are evaluated during the work for alteration of this Standard. The present Standard is the exclusive property of PETRLEO BRASILEIRO S.A. - PETROBRAS, for internal use in the Company, and any reproduction for external use or disclosure, without previous and express authorization from the owner, will imply an unlawful act pursuant to the relevant legislation through which the applicable responsibilities shall be imputed. External circulation shall be regulated by a specific clause of Secrecy and Confidentiality pursuant to the terms of intellectual and industrial property law.

This Standard is the English version (issued in NOV/2004) of Standard PETROBRAS N-2790 NOV/2004.

1 SCOPE
1.1 This Standard establishes the basic safety criteria that shall be complied with in the development of the activities in PETROBRAS non-chemical laboratories. 1.2 Standards PETROBRAS N-2549 and N-2675 shall be consulted for chemical laboratories. Standard PETROBRAS N-2702 shall be consulted for microbiology laboratories. 1.3 This Standard is applied to procedures starting from its issue date. 1.4 This Standard contains Technical Requirements and Recommended Practices.

3 DEFINITIONS
For the purposes of this Standard the definitions indicated in items 3.1 to 3.3 are adopted. 3.1 Combustible Liquids Substances having a flash point at equal or higher than 70 C and lower than 93.3 oC, according to the regulatory standard No. 20 (NR-20). 5

3.2 Flammable Liquids

Substances having a flash point lower than 70 C and having an absolute vapor pressure not exceeding 2.8 kgf/cm2 at 37.7 C, according to the regulatory standard No. 20 (NR-20). 3.3 Visitor Person who enters in a non-chemical laboratory, without being directly involved in the activity developed therein.

4 CLASSIFICATION
4.1 General Criteria 4.1.1 All sites called as laboratories are classified according to the following standards: a) microbiology laboratories, according to standard PETROBRAS N-2702; b) chemical laboratories, according to standards PETROBRAS N-2549 and N-2675; c) non-chemical laboratories, according to the criteria established in this Standard. 4.1.2 Laboratories classification shall be done by the Safety, Environment and Health (SMS, with its abbreviature in Portuguese) area of the unit with the management responsible for the laboratory. 4.1.3 Laboratories classification shall be compatible with the information contained in the Environmental Risks Prevention Program (PPRA, with its abbreviature in Portuguese) of the unit. 4.1.4 Non-chemical laboratories shall be classified according to the item 4.2 of this Standard. 4.1.5 It may occur the presence of chemical products in non-chemical laboratories for specific purposes within the criteria established by this Standard. Note: The use of chemical products exclusively for cleanup and maintenance of equipment doesnt characterize the laboratory as a chemical one. The determination of the action level for the non-chemical laboratory classification shall use parameters based on the risks and limits values established in the regulatory standard No. 15 (NR-15), or, in the absence of these parame ters, the limit values established by ACGIH (American Conference of Industrial Hygienists), or even those established in collective work deals, whereas more rigorous than the established technical-legal criteria.

4.1.7 For the cases in which there is a possibility of classification of a non-chemical laboratory in more than one type, the design criteria and the application of the personnel and collective protections shall comply with all the requirements defined for those types of laboratory, except when are created physically isolated sites with specific treatment. 4.1.8 For the cases in which is performed a chemical activity which may not characterize a laboratory as non-chemical, one of the following items shall be followed: a) total classification of the laboratory as chemical one; or b) physical separation of this activity, complying in this area with the criteria established in standards PETROBRAS N-2549 and N-2675, classifying the other sites as non-chemical laboratory. 4.1.9 A signaling plate shall be foreseen in the main entry door of all non-chemical laboratories, with its classification indicated and with the following words: NON-CHEMICAL LABORATORY TYPE X Where: X = A, B, C, D, E, F or association of them (for instance: E/F). 4.2 Types The site defined as non-chemical laboratory shall be classified according to the items 4.2.1 to 4.2.6 of this Standard. Note: Laboratories, which are not classified in those types, shall be evaluated regarding safety conditions by the SMS area of the unit with the management responsible for the laboratory.

4.2.1 A Type Laboratories in which chemical products arent stored or handled, without level noise above the action level [80 dB(A)], without generation of metallic dust or fumes, without abnormal vibrations, without ionizing or non-ionizing radiations and which dont have equipments which operate with abnormal pressures (above or below atmospheric pressure). Some examples of this type of laboratory: technician rooms, metallographic microscopy laboratory (which doesnt handle chemical regents for sample attack), electronic laboratories, instrumentation laboratories and electronic gauge laboratories. 4.2.2 B Type Laboratories with level noise above the action level [80 dB(A)], or with generation of metallic dust or fumes, or with abnormal vibrations, or with ionizing and non-ionizing radiations and which dont have equipments which operate with abnormal pressure (above or below the atmospheric pressure). Some examples of this type of laboratory: core samples rooms, laboratories of mechanical tests of small size and laboratories of instrumentation and electromechanical gauge.

4.2.3 C Type

Laboratories with rotative machines, or lift of heavy loads, or existence of overhead traveler crane, mechanical treadmills or mechanical press, or equipments which generate abnormal vibrations. Some examples of this type of laboratory: mechanical tests laboratory and mechanical factories. 4.2.4 D Type Laboratories with presence of flammable liquids into closed system equipments, or with the presence of combustible liquids into open systems equipment, or with equipments which are classified as C and D, according to the regulatory standard No. 13 (NR-13). Some examples of this type of laboratory: vehicle tests laboratories and core sample laboratories, both of internal combustion engines. 4.2.5 E Type Laboratories with equipments which have radioactive elements into closed systems or which can generate ionizing radiation. Some examples of this type of laboratory: laboratories with gamagrafy or x-rays equipments. 4.2.6 F Type Laboratories with equipments classified as A and B, according to the regulatory standard No. 13 (NR-13). Some examples of this type of laboratory: laboratories of hyperbaric tests and laboratories with autoclaves.

5 GENERAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS


5.1 On starting an activity in the non-chemical laboratory, it is important that safety procedures be known beforehand so as to allow actions to be taken with minimum risks. For the management of those risks, it is necessary that: a) layout shall be functional; b) people shall be fully aware of existing risks and environmental aspects and be trained and prepared for adopting the preventive and mitigating measures recommended due to the risks and environmental aspects; c) safety standards shall be complied with; d) sufficient equipment shall be available for emergency prevention, mitigation and control. 5.2 Every person who enters in the site of a non-chemical laboratory shall comply with the safety recommendations and shall be duly protected with safety equipment equivalent to that adopted by the worker of that laboratory. 5.3 Any worker who allows a visitor to enter the laboratory is responsible for his safety during the time period inside the laboratory. The visitor shall not circulate alone in the non-chemical laboratory.

5.4 People who work in a non-chemical laboratory shall be aware of the risks of their activities, products and services, toxic properties of used chemical substances, the possible means of absorption by the organism, the personal protection equipment, the risks and environmental aspects prevention, mitigation and control measures. 5.5 No worker shall carry out alone his/her activity in a non-chemical laboratory, when these activities are considered as meaningful risk or environmental aspect. Note: Activites considered as meaningful risk or environmental aspect shall be identified in the internal procedures related to that activity of the non-chemical laboratory.

5.6 All documentation of the non-chemical laboratory, such as: manuals of equipment, machines, tools and apparatus, procedures, safety information cards of chemical products, among others, shall be available in the country language. 5.7 The non-chemical laboratory uniform shall provide suitable protection against the activities that are carried out in the site and the inherent or potential risks and environmental aspects. 5.8 It is not permitted to eat, drink and smoke, as well as to keep food, beverages, tobacco and cosmetic products within the non-chemical laboratory. Note: The tobacco products use is only permitted in the sites previously established by the PETROBRAS, obeying the requirements established in the Law No. 9294 and other legislation supplementary or substitutive.

5.9 The use of rings, bracelets, strings, collars, wristwatches or other accessories, which can get stuck in equipment or machines in the activity performance, shall be forbidden. This restriction shall be foreseen in the operational procedures, being the equipment signaling with this restriction. Note: Special attention shall be given to the use of long hair which can get stuck in equipment or machines in the activity performance. In this case, this restriction shall be foreseen in internal procedure of the laboratory, related to this activity, as well as the control actions.

5.10 The requirements established in regulatory standards No.11 (NR-11) and No.12 (NR-12) shall be complied with in the handling, storage and transport. 5.11 Carts, baskets or trays suitable for the activity shall be used for any moving of material in the non-chemical laboratory. 5.12 The requirements established in regulatory standard No. 17 (NR-17) shall be complied with in the moving and manual transport of loads.

5.13 The manual cars for transport shall have protectors for hands. 5.14 All non-chemical laboratories shall be kept clean, set in order and with duly demarcated circulation ways, with bands in the colors indicated in the regulatory standard No. 26 (NR-26). Note: For non-chemical laboratories A type, this signaling shall be evaluated by the laboratory management with the SMS area of the unit.

5.15 Immediately clean and suitable conditioning of the generated wastes shall be done in the case of any spilled substances. 5.16 Arrange for immediately correction in the case of any of the following conditions are observed: a) floors that are wet, irregular, with obstacles or presenting unevenness; b) loose drains or drains that are not at the same level as the floor; c) obstructed doors or areas with difficult access. 5.17 The non-chemical laboratory shall keep evacuation procedures for emergency situations, being of knowledge and training of all personnel, integrated with the emergency plan of the unit, providing suitable emergency exits according to the regulatory standard No. 23 (NR-23). 5.18 The colors used for non-chemical laboratory piping system shall be adopted according to regulatory standard No. 26 (NR-26). 5.19 Fire extinguishers, fireboxes, eyewash stations and other safety equipment shall be at a visible and easily accessible and unobstructed location, with signaling according to regulatory standard No. 23 (NR-23). Notes: 1) The eyewash shall be daily tested before activities are begun. 2) Emergency showers shall be periodically tested in a time period not higher than 3 months.

5.20 All activities carried out in the non-chemical laboratory shall be aimed at minimizing the generation of wastes, effluents and atmospheric emissions, as well as the water and electrical energy consumption. 5.21 The requirements established in the waste management plan shall be observed on discard procedures of each unit. Note: Flammable substances shall be discarded of through suitable containers and never directly into the sinks or drains, except if its designed for this purpose.

5.22 Any flasks containing or storing heated flammable or combustible liquids shall be open to the atmosphere.

6 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT


6.1 Personal protective equipment (EPI, with its abbreviature in Portuguese) shall be adopted whenever collective measures do not provide complete protection against risks of accidents and damages to the workers health. In the non-chemical laboratory, depending on the activity, the following basic EPIs shall be used: a) b) c) d) e) f) g) h) Notes: head protection; eyes and face protection; ears protection; respiratory protection; superior members protection; inferior members protection; body protection; entire body protection.

1) The SMS area of the unit shall be responsible for recommending the suitable EPIs to the risks of each activity and worksite, as well as for assessing in the areas landmarking of EPI use. 2) EPIs purchase shall only be done by the responsible area of the unit, with specific recommendation of the SMS area of the unit. 3) For respiratory protection Normative Instruction No. 1 of the Ministry of Labor and Employment shall be followed. 4) EPI shall not be of collective use. 5) Use of EPI requires suitable orientation and training. 6) Users are responsible by the guard, suitable use and conservation of the EPIs, with its obey being indicated in the operational procedure of the unit.

6.2 Any change in the EPI by the user results in the loss of the approval certificate (CA, with its abbreviature in Portuguese), such as substitution of the original lenses of the safety glasses by the prescribed lenses. Note: In the case of prescribed lenses need, specific safety glasses for this purpose shall be required.

6.3 EPIs of obliged constant use shall be signaling in the main entry door of the non-chemical laboratory. For the cases that the EPI of obliged used in the performance of specific activities, those shall be foreseen in the execution procedures of this activity, as well as its signaling shall be placed in the equipment or in the site of its performance. 6.4 It is not permitted to guard chemical substances and EPIs inside lockers of personal use.

7 CHEMICAL PRODUCTS

The following requirements shall be complied with for the cases in which are used chemical products in the laboratories defined in this Standard: a) keep updated in a physical medium the safety information cards of used chemical products, filled out according to standard ABNT NBR 14725, independent of the existence of that information in electronic medium; b) hands shall be kept away from mouth or eyes in the development of activities which involve chemical substances; c) comply with the requirements of chemical products handling established in standard PETROBRAS N-2549.

8 EQUIPMENT
8.1 In the non-chemical laboratory, equipment, machines, apparatus, tools and materials are essential for routine tasks. They shall be carefully handled and operational care and routine inspections are essential for maintaining a good operational performance and for offering safety in their handling. Notes: 1) Equipments, machines, apparatus, tools and materials shall only be used for its purpose. 2) Tweezers, flasks and tubes of suitable materials and sizes shall be used according to the activity. Do not improvise tools or devices.

8.2 The instructions of the equipment, machine, apparatus or tool shall be known before the operation beginning. 8.3 Emergency procedures of critical equipment shall be available in the non-chemical laboratory in physical medium and in visible place. Note: Critical equipment shall be defined in the unit procedures, according to the management system.

8.4 Every machines and equipment shall have its power transmission closed inside its structure or duly isolated by suitable bulkheads. Note: Special cases shall be studied by the laboratory management with the SMS area of the unit.

8.5 Every machines and equipment, which offer risks of rupture of its parts, projection of pieces or parts of that pieces, shall have its movements protected, alternated or rotating, according to the regulatory standard No. 12 (NR-12). 8.6 It is recommended that electrical and heating equipment be turned off and unplugged after being used, especially after normal working hours. 8.7 It is forbidden to use the simultaneous connection to more than one apparatus to the same plug, with the use of devices that increase the outlet number, except if the facility is designed for this purpose, according to the regulatory standard No. 10 (NR-10). In this case, the maximum allowed electric current shall be shown in the equipment. 8.8 Wires, plugs, connectors, circuit breakers and transformers, among others, shall be in perfect operating conditions and duly sized for the voltage and amperage to which they are subjected. Note: 110 V and 220 V connectors shall have differentiated connections so as to prevent wrong use of electrical plugs.

8.9 Plugs shall be duly identified and marked with the voltage used. Electrical circuit shall be identified in the plugs and in the electrical switchboard. 8.10 Electrical equipment shall be duly grounded and prepared to ensure the necessary protection to users and facilities in the case of electrical discharges or short circuits occurrence. 8.11 Electrical facilities which are in direct or indirect contact with water and that can permit current escape, shall be designed and performed according to current official technical standards, specially regarding casing, protection, tightness, insulation and grounding, according to regulatory standard No. 10 (NR-10). 8.12 Automatic control of critical electric equipment shall be periodically inspected as defined in the preventive maintenance program. 8.13 It is not permitted to leave electrical cables installed so as to generate accident risks, especially in areas with water presence.

9 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR DESIGN


The construction of a non-chemical laboratory, regarding safety, shall obey the regulatory standards of Labor Ministry, environmental legislation, sanitary surveillance legislation and the Building Code. Standard CNEN-NE 6.04 shall be followed for the specific case of E type non-chemical laboratory. 9.1 Floors 9.1.1 Characteristics as toughness, impermeability, texture, color and composition shall suitably comply with the types of non-chemical laboratories specified in the item 4.2 of this Standard and be in accordance with the current standards and use standards of the unit. In the same way, the rejoints shall be suitable to the same conditions.

9.1.2 The worksites floors shall be, whenever necessary, waterproofed and protected against humidity. 9.1.3 In the case of non-chemical laboratories, which handle metallic mercury in its tests, floors, skirting board and walls shall not have joints which permit the accumulation or the passage of this material for other sites in case of leakage or spillage. 9.1.4 Materials storage shall not exceed the mechanical resistance of the floor, regarding the punctual load application. 9.1.5 The worksite floor, where equipment and machines are installed, shall be made of non-slippery, without roughness and washable materials and kept on perfect conservation state, avoiding places which can accumulate greases, oils and other substance wastes, which make them slippery, according to the regulatory standard No. 12 (NR-12). 9.1.6 The tightness of the non-chemical laboratory floors shall be ensured against leakages, spillages or objects fall for lower floors or environment contamination. 9.1.7 Stairways and ramps shall be signaling. 9.2 Covering and Lining 9.2.1 The non-chemical laboratory lining shall be modulated, accessible, allowing maintenance facilities, with thermo-acoustic characteristics and made of non-extinguished and flame-retardant material. 9.2.2 The lining fastening shall be independent without its fastening not permitting the use of ducts, eletrocalhas and others, allowing that its disassembly dont affect the laboratory structure. The lining design shall be in accordance with the unit use procedures and current official standards. 9.2.3 The tiles shall ensure a perfect impermeability and thermal insulation, when the laboratory is a non-climatized shed without lining use. 9.2.4 The height between the floor and the covering shall be compatible with the equipments used in the laboratory, being lower than 3 m, so as to obtain a good air circulation and facilitate the equipment movements. Notes: 1) The worksites shall have the height between the floor and the covering, according with the cities requirements in compliance with the conditions of comfort, safety and health established in the regulatory standards of the Labor Ministry. 2) It is permitted that this value of 3 m be reduced until 2.70 m, whereas the compliance with the requirements of the Note 1 and the minimum levels of illuminance, ventilation, thermal and acoustic comfort, compatible with the work nature. 14

3) Special precaution shall be taken to the pipelines position of the air conditioning system and girders, so as to not reduce the height between the floor and the covering of the internal site below than the values indicated in the item 9.2.4. 9.3 Walls and Partition Walls 9.3.1 Non-chemical laboratory shall have 2 doors suitably situated, preferably in opposite sides, so as to make possible people escape by the opposite side of the event, or make possible the fire brigade access in case of emergency, being the release of this requirement in charge of the SMS area of the unit. Doors shall open in the exit direction in such a way that when opened, they dont obstruct passageways, in accordance with the established in regulatory standard No. 23 (NR-23). 9.3.2 The characteristics of the partition walls used in the non-chemical laboratories shall correspond to the needs of the types of laboratories classified in the item 4.2 of this Standard, being made of auto-extinguished and flame-retardant material. 9.3.3 Walls and partition walls of E type non-chemical laboratory shall comply with the standards of the Nuclear Energy National Commission (CNEN, with its abbreviature in Portuguese). 9.3.4 Walls and partition walls of laboratories shall be, whenever necessary, waterproofed and protected against humidity, mildew and fungi. 9.3.5 External walls of the non-chemical laboratory shall me made of suitable material, so as to contribute for keep the internal temperature as stable as possible and so as to protect the site from weather conditions and noises. 9.3.6 In the non-chemical laboratory is permitted the use of partition walls, so that the site have facilities of layout changes. Special precautions shall be taken when the site presents explosion risk. 9.3.7 The color of walls and partition walls shall be cloudy and clear tonality, so as to dont cause eyes fatigue and incident light reflection, but only its diffusion. Note: It is permitted that the sites have dark colors, according to the activity to be carried out, without cause, however, discomfort to the worker.

9.4 Installations 9.4.1 In the C and D type non-chemical laboratories, it shall be provided channels for oily waste collection, directed to the oily sewage and water points on sinks for labor hygiene, with sewage directed to the oily sewage. In the case of onshore installations, the drainage systems shall comply with the requirements established in standard PETROBRAS N-38.

9.4.2 The installation of an independent exhaustion shall be provided in core sample rooms of internal combustion engines. Note: It is recommended the existence of a periodic monitoring system for evaluating the efficiency of the exhaustion system. [Recommended Practice]

9.4.3 Every non-chemical laboratory shall have a system for detection, alarm and fire fighting suitable to the laboratory type. Note: The SMS area of the unit is responsible for recommending this system, according to the laboratory type.

9.4.4 Eyes-washer, emergency showers and flame protection mantle shall be provided for rooms of core samples of internal combustion engine. Notes: 1) The drip rail of the emergency shower shall be connected to the oily sewage system and shall be done by collector boxes, according to its flow, with grating at the same level of the floor. 2) The SMS area unit shall be consulted for determining the distance between the emergency showers.

9.4.5 E type non-chemical laboratory installation shall comply with the standards of the Nuclear Energy National Commission (CNEN, with its abbreviature in Portuguese). 9.4.6 Electrical installations of non-chemical laboratories shall comply with the regulatory standard No. 10 (NR-10). 9.4.7 In areas considered as classified, in accordance with standard PETROBRAS N-2166, all electrical equipments shall be suitable for operating in its classification. 9.4.8 For sites with vapors and dusts release, a suitable system shall be installed, so as to protect the worker respiratory system. 9.4.9 For sites with air conditioning system and which have products able to release vapors and dusts, this air conditioning system shall be designed so as to retain the particles and suitably treat the vapors. In the case of natural ventilation, the air exchange shall comply with the specific technical standards. 9.4.10 In the non-chemical laboratory, ventilation/exhaustion shall be provided to favor the air exchange, so as to keep the site without harmful agents, protecting workers health and the conditions and integrity of the equipments and installations. Air plugs in outside shall be distributed and directed to protected places against the entry of chemical contaminants, dusts, biological agent (fungi, insects etc.), soot and others.

The location of the gas exhaustion system shall be taken into account, because the air stream may conduce gases to other buildings or even in the direction of the gathering point of the air conditioning system of the non-chemical laboratory.

9.4.11 The thermal insulation of the ducts of air conditioning with vapor barrier shall be used whenever occurs the risk of condensation in its external surface. 9.4.12 The ducts of air conditioning and exhaustion shall be firmly fixed and isolated, so as to avoid the noise generation. 9.4.13 The ducts of the ventilation system shall have inspection windows, so as to facilitate the visualization and cleanup, in compliance with MS Governmental Regulation No. 3523 and other supplementary or substitutive legislations and standards. 9.5 Furniture and Ergonomic Issues 9.5.1 The non-chemical laboratories shall comply with the ergonomic requirements defined in the regulatory standard No. 17 (NR-17), regarding the activity to be carried out, especially in relation to the illumination conditions, noise level, thermal comfort and furniture. 9.5.2 Machine and equipments layout shall comply with the requirements established in regulatory standard No. 12 (NR-12). 9.5.3 The heights and materials for finishing benches and seats shall comply with the activity type in the laboratory and with the regulatory standard No. 17 (NR-17).

10 A TYPE NON-CHEMICAL LABORATORY


10.1 Safety Devices For this type of laboratory, the SMS area of the unit shall be responsible for establishing the need of EPIs and uniforms. 10.2 Handling, Storage and Transport The basic precautions of safety, environment and health shall be observed on handling, storage and transport of materials, equipments and wastes.

11 B TYPE NON-CHEMICAL LABORATORY


11.1 Safety Devices The EPIs use for this type of laboratory shall comply with Chapter 6 of this Standard and shall be detailed in the operational procedure of the unit. 17

11.2 Small Devices for Scour, Saw, Pierce and Cut (Small Saws, Small Jigsaws etc.) a) before beginning the activity: - check the conditions of belts, pulleys, electric cables, protection and grounding system; - check the disc regarding its model, purpose, dimensions and technical specifications (rotation, disc grain sizes etc.); - comply with the specific requirements of safety and use, according to the manufacturers instruction and specific standards; b) periodic actions: - periodic maintenance; - gauge and certification, when necessary; - do not allow adaptations which affect the purpose and the safety requirements of the equipment. 11.3 Small Pumps a) before beginning the activity: - check the electrical protection system of the pumps; - check the existence of a device for shut-off automatically, whenever presents imminent risk of accident by irregular functioning; - check the case grounding; - check the right level of cooling and lubricating fluids; - comply with the specific requirements of safety and use, according to the manufacturers instruction and specific standards; b) during the activity: - check the abnormal heating of case, wiring and electrical protections; c) periodic actions: - periodic maintenance; - check the brushes conditions; - gauge and certification, when necessary; - do not allow no-planned adaptations which affect the equipment purpose. 11.4 Rock Samples a) before beginning the activity: - it is recommended that the rock samples boxes be made of material of suitable resistance and low weight; [Recommended Practice] - do not exceed the limit of 1.50 m for manual movement of rock sample boxes; for heights above 1.50m, it shall be used suitable equipments for load movements; - do not use equipments with internal combustion engine in the case of storage on closed sites; - do not transport rock samples boxes in slippery or wet floors; b) during the activity: - pay attention to the risk of fall during handling; - take suitable position when handling rock samples; - pay attention to the ergonomic aspects on movement, transport and storage of rock samples boxes; - arrange the stored material, so as to avoid obstruction of doors, fire fighting equipments, exits, illumination etc and not to cause thrust or overload in the walls, flagstone or supporting structures, besides the established items on its sizing.

12 C TYPE NON-CHEMICAL LABORATORY


12.1 Safety Devices The EPIs use for this type of laboratory shall comply with Chapter 6 of this Standard and shall be detailed in the operational procedure of the unit. 12.2 Loads Movement a) before beginning the activity: - the operation of machines and equipment, which exposes the operator or third parties to risks, shall only be done by qualified worker and identified by badge; - indicate the maximum allowable work load in every equipment in a visible place; - isolate and signaling the area in which the lifting load will be transported; - comply with the specific requirements of safety and use, according to the manufacturers instruction and specific standards; b) during the activity: - once the load is lifted, complete the cycle, putting the load in the destiny place; - never leave a lifted load abandoned; - isolate the area and check the possibility of take off the load with the stacker use, in the case of lack of energy during the operation with lifted load; c) periodic actions: - gauge and certification, when necessary; - the operator shall have a specific training given by the company, which will capacity him/her in this function in transport equipments with proper drive strength; - check steel cables, strips, chains, sheaves, hooks, pad eyes, reducers and ratchets, with substitution of its fault parts; - test periodically the capacity of maximum work load of the equipment; - it is recommended that the load circulation area be isolated, unobstructed and signaling with visual and sound means, except the lifted load movement, where this practice is obliged; [Recommended Practice] - do not permit no-planned adaptations which affect the equipment purpose; d) after ending the activity: - keep the sheave hook (device for equipments of crane and transport, used for hoisting loads) in a safety height above the workers head level, when the overhead traveler crane is not being used. 19

13.1 Safety Devices The EPIs use for this type of laboratory shall comply with Chapter 6 of this Standard and shall be detailed in the operational procedure of the unit. 13.2 Chemical Products a) before beginning the activity: - store chemical products for replacement in the closed systems in suitable places, outside the laboratory, such as: warehouses and chemical laboratories; - avoid every and any spillage of flammable product, due to the possibility of risks generation for the workers health and for the environment; when is observed the possibility of occurrence of this kind of situations, systems or devices able to avoid its occurrence shall be provided; b) during the activity: - use EPIs and EPCs; - ensure the preparation for eventual local contingencies; 20

14 E TYPE NON-CHEMICAL LABORATORY


14.1 Safety Devices The EPIs use for this type of laboratory shall comply with Chapter 6 of this Standard and shall be detailed in the operational procedure of the unit. 14.2 Equipments with Radiation a) before beginning the activity: - ensure the mandatory use of dosimeter; b) periodic actions: - consult the radioprotection supervisor of the unit; - know standards CNEN-NE-3.01, CNEN-NE-3.02, CNEN-NE-3.03, CNEN-NE-6.02 and CNEN-NE-6.04; - ensure that the areas are classified by CNEN; - ensure that every worker in this type of laboratory have the basic course of radioprotection; - suitable signaling in every place where there are the equipments, followed by the international radiation symbol; - ensure that every material is controlled by a responsible person who is qualified for this service.

15 F TYPE NON-CHEMICAL LABORATORY


15.1 Safety Devices The EPIs use for this type of laboratory shall comply with Chapter 6 of this Standard and shall be detailed in the operational procedure of the unit. 15.2 Autoclave a) before beginning the activity: - check the sealing rubber of equipment and the correct water level; - when the quality of potable water is not satisfactory, use of distilled water is permitted; [Recommended Practice] b) during the activity: - check operational pressure and temperature by using pressure gauge and thermometer; c) periodic actions: - comply with the requirements for autoclaves of regulatory standard No.13 (NR-13); - carry out maintenance and inspection of the autoclave on an annual basis; - calibrate thermometer and manometer every semester; - calibrate safety valve every semester; - it is recommended that the hood be installed above the autoclaves so as to minimize the vapors and odors emission and large quantities of heat in the laboratory. 15.3 Hyperbaric Chamber

a) before beginning the activity: - if it is necessary the entry of the worker in the hyperbaric chamber by the upper part, the worker shall have a company and shall be observed by other trained person; - do not allow the entry on hyperbaric chamber when full of water; - for equipment assembly in the diving tank, the worker shall use safety belt and shall have a company and shall be observed by other trained person; - contract a professional qualified for diving, if it is necessary to dive in the tank; - check the perfect conditions of the components and suitable tightening of the connections, before the work performance with hoses and hydraulic connections; - ensure that the following safety items are in the hyperbaric chamber and with suitable operation: relief and safety valve, rupture disc, redundant pressure monitoring, interlocking, mechanical locking in the systems of closing doors and manholes, alarms and warning plates; b) during the activity: - comply with the requirements established in the item 12.2 of this Standard for C type laboratory in the activities of load movement.
