 Academic reading is an active process that goes
beyond merely reading and highlighting your text. You
need to interact with the text by taking notes, making
connections between the text and what you already
know or have experienced, and asking critical
questions about the material you are reading.

 The context for your reading is second year –university
studies at Ain Temouchent University .
 It ditermines the attitude you bring to your reading
which means thta you should have a desire to learn
through your reading and not only to do tasks and
assignments given to you .
 All what you read during your learning process should
be approached with a desire to understand and
eagerness to doscover more .
 Before commencing your academic reading , the
purpose behind it should be defined .

 Example : If you are making areasearch for an


assignment , are you looking for an explanation ,
evidence for a certain critique , answers to questions or
you are just aiming at filling in the gaps in your
knowledge about the topic .
 A text may refer to any kind of written material :
(book , article , newspaper , dissertation /essay , a report
…etc )

 You need to identify the types of texts you will be


using in your university studies and what does each
type contain as data and information .

 Before you start reading , SURVEY /SCAN the text :
 Titles – headings –subheadings …
 Introduction and conclusion
 Captions found under figures and illustrations
 Summary , abstract .
 QUESTION while you are surveying :
 Turn the titles to questions.
 What do I really know about this subject and what I
don’t ?
 What did the lecturer said about this topic you are
reading about ?
 Work in pairs and write down a set
of tips of academic reading that
