The advent of Industry 4.0 has brought about substantial changes in various industries, including
pharmaceuticals. This research delves into the origins of Industry 4.0, or the Fourth Industrial
Revolution, and critically assesses its effects on Pfizer's supply chain.

2.0 Literature Review:

The term "revolution" signifies a significant societal or economic change. Examining past
industrial revolutions, starting from the first in 1700, reveals transformative shifts in technology,
materials, and industries. The fourth industrial revolution distinguishes itself by amalgamating
physical, digital, and biological systems at an unprecedented rate, driven by breakthroughs in
artificial intelligence, robotics, internet of things, 3D printing, nanotechnology, biotechnology,
and more.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, marked by smart factories and automation, has substantially
improved manufacturing efficiency, introducing agility and flexibility. This section critically
analyzes its impact on Pfizer's supply chain operations.

3.0 Impact of Industry 4.0 on Pfizer:

The pharmaceutical supply chain involves the integration of activities from raw materials to end-
users. Pfizer, positioned between product developers and healthcare providers, relies
significantly on hospital orders, contributing to 60-70% of its revenue.

Previously, Pfizer's supply chain operations were slower, relying on traditional communication
methods for order placement and evaluation of stocks. Industry 4.0 technologies have enabled
Pfizer to enhance efficiency, particularly in inventory management, demand forecasting, and
production planning.

Utilizing technologies like online ordering systems, Pfizer has aimed to streamline processes.
However, challenges persist in fully leveraging the potential of these advancements. Integrating
real-time tracking options and IoT, such as RFID chips, could further enhance Pfizer's supply
chain, providing healthcare providers with improved visibility and control.
