Drowning Contaminated Water Water/swells Tides Equipment trapped Collapse of edge Fatigue/hypothermia from failing in the water caused by: Falls from height, trips and slips Being knocked over by moving objects (crane loads) Loss of balance (high winds) Swell from passing water borne traffic (the wash) Material transfer to Location from shore collapse of crane due to soft / loose sand that may result in severe injury / fatality, material / asset & environmental damage.

Rescue plan to be in place, discussed and recorded before work commences. Fall arrest equipment i.e. harnesses, working to the spirit. Life jackets/buoyancy aids to be worn and compatible with the wearing of safety harnesses Life buoy with 30m minimum length of rope Rescue lines in floating canvas bag with 30m line. Rescue pack rescuer swims attached to 100m-200m line and both are pulled in. Rescue boat required for work over, or adjacent to tidal water and fast flowing rivers and some still water work. Vehicle must be parked designated area. Do not drive the vehicle near to edge. Weather situation must be know from Weather station and communicate to the all of the employees involve in the marine works.

Minimum safe distance for crane position and barge position to be determined after completion of shore study at the jetty area. Cranes, Barges shall be positioned accordingly. Person handling the boat must be experienced and the boat seaworthy and equipped with grab lines and boat hooks. Two-way radio between boat and shore and phone to summon emergency assistance contact numbers available before work commences. Selection of personnel can they swim? Are they happy working over water? Are they fit enough? Instruct personnel on what they should do if they fall in the water i.e. (remove spanners, boots etc.) Advise on precautions to take and symptoms of Wells disease / leptospirosis First aider should be available No lone working (minimum of 3 men) Work on completed platforms only Take care when handling Working boards and ensure that materials are secured against being blown away. Ensure that materials that are likely to be lifted by the wind are made secure before going to break or at the end of play.

Working hot/sunny conditions

Sunstroke / Sunburn Heat Stress Skin Cancer Dehydration

Emergency evacuation to shore, delays due to distance from shore

Injuries to persons Damage to machinery.

Rescue of someone who has had a fall when harness is attached to anchor point

Suspension trauma caused by worker being suspended in upright posture with legs dangling, leading to serious reduction in the hearts ability to circulate the blood leading to possible death

More involved rescue by coworkers i.e. hanging (drop) scaffold, work over water requiring use of specialist equipment

If too windy cease work. Drink regular amounts of water & isotonic fluids before and during shifts. Take regular breaks in the shade or as required. Cover up exposed area Use sunscreen Wear tinted eye protection Get plenty of rest out of work. Report immediately to Foreman if feeling dizzy or unwell. The walls and faces of all excavations in which employees are exposed to danger from a fall or dislodgement of earth, rock or other material shall be guarded by a shoring system, battering of the ground or some other equivalent means. A qualified and authorized person shall design the shoring system. The system shall meet the required engineering standards. Materials used shall be in good serviceable condition and of proper dimensions All aspects and materials of an excavation operation, including the shoring, shall be inspected by a trained, qualified and designated person every day prior to use, to ensure there is no danger of collapse Rescue plan to form part of the risk assessment for every job. Train workers what to do should they fall and remain conscious to avoid suspension trauma. i.e. It is essential to try to work lower body muscles so that they can pump the blood back to the heart. Get legs up as high as possible and head as close to the horizontal as possible. Push down vigorously with the legs to help circulation. Push against any footholds. Try to stand up, thus relieving pressure on legs by grabbing hold of and pulling up on lanyard. Train rescuers that they should:-Contact emergency services immediately in case assistance to be required. -Working team to rescue rapidly, trying to limit fallers time in an upright position to 5 minutes. -If unconscious try to get faller into a horizontal posture or at least a sitting position when still in the suspended position. Use specialist equipment i.e. BH Sale Block with built in retrieval handle (DBU 15 R). The Span set Gotcha System. Rope access specialist trained in rescue techniques who must be on standby all the time The worker team is working where they may require rescue Equipment to be readily available on site and rigged up if necessary before starting work.

If equipment is suspended from steelwork safe access must be available. Co-workers carrying out rescue using specialist equipment must be trained in its use. Refresher training on using the equipment to be given at regular intervals. Specific risk assessment required for this type of rescue prior to commencing work. Prior to work commencement, rescue plan to be in place and all to be trained on it and to include whether if frailer is lowered to the ground/ rescue boat or brought up to a suitable rescue platform
