III. Answer the following questions.


Q.1. Describe the incident that changed Arunima’s life.
A.1. Arunima was attacked by a gang of robbers when she was travelling in a train from
Lucknow to Delhi. The robbers snatched her bag and pushed her out of the running train. She
fell on the tracks and was unable to move due to severe injuries when another train from the
opposite direction ran over her leg. This unfortunate incident changed her life forever.
Q.2. How did Arunima prepare herself in the hospital to pursue her dream?
A.2. Arunima spent her time during her period of recovery in the hospital by listening and
reading about mountaineering. She loved reading about the challenges faced by climbers who
had conquered Mount Everest. Thus, she prepared herself to pursue her dream of achieving
an almost impossible task of climbing Mount Everest.
Q.3. What is the death zone? Why is it so called?
A.3. The ‘death zone’ is the dangerous part of the mountain which is 8000 metres above sea-
level. The terrain here is extremely difficult. There are sharp ridges, deep crevasse on either
side of the track and one false step means certain death. The death zone is so called as it has
claimed the lives of many aspiring mountaineers.
Q.4. What did Arunima do when she reached the summit?
A.4. Arunima proudly planted the Indian tricolour when she reached on top of the summit.
She also pushed a note wrapped in cloth into the snow, thanking God for helping her to
achieve her dream.
Q.5. Do you think Arunima was brave? Give reasons for your answer.
A.5. Arunima was very brave. She dreamt of climbing Mount Everest even though she had an
artificial leg. The climb to the highest summit was so tough that the Sherpa advised her to
turn back, but she refused to do so. She was in great pain when she entered the death zone,
yet she did not give up. Her determination, will power and ability to overcome challenges
make her a brave person.

Poem : Don’t Give Up

I. Answer the following questions.


Q.1. What is the poet trying to teach us through the poem, ‘Don’t Give Up’?
A.1. The poet teaches us to never give up in life. She says that we should not be disappointed
by our failures, instead we should be patient and keep trying until we succeed.
Q.2. What happens to the young birds when they learn to fly?
A.2. Young birds fall in the first few attempts when they learn to fly. However, they do not
stop trying. Eventually, after several attempts, their wings grow stronger and they learn to fly.
Q.3.Why does the poet give an example of the sturdy tree?
A.3.The poet wants us to be strong like a sturdy tree. The tree stands up even after being
bowed down by the strong winds. The poet says that the tree rises taller and stronger than
before only after surviving many storms.
Q.4. What happens when we win something that is very easy? How can we gain victory
from defeat?
A.4. People will not value us if we win something that is very easy. We can gain victory from
defeat by not giving up and keep trying hard until we succeed.
Q.5. Why is it difficult to try after losing?
A.5. It is difficult to try after losing because most often we tend to lose heart and the will to
succeed. The real test lies in not giving up but to keep trying until we achieve our goals.

Q.1. What were Colonel Vasanth’s interests as a child?
A.1. Colonel Vasanth’s interests as a child were very different. He loved reading war stories
and his school notebooks were always filled with detailed drawings of battle tanks and
uniformed soldiers. He was greatly fascinated with armoured tanks and weaponry.
Q.2. What motivated Colonel Vasanth to join the army?
A.2. Colonel Vasanth’s great love for his country motivated him to join the army. His
reverence for the uniform was such, that even as a child he never failed to salute a policeman
or a guard on duty.
Q.3. Why were the soldiers hesitating to save the deer?
A.3. The deer was trapped in an undergrowth below a cliff. The soldiers were hesitating
because they would have to climb down a dangerous slope to rescue the deer and none of the
soldiers were brave enough to do that.
Q.4. How did Colonel Vasanth show great courage in the Uri encounter?
A.4. Colonel Vasanth displayed his bravery and courage in the Uri encounter. His troops
surrounded the terrorists in a forest, blocking their escape route in the Uri sector of Kashmir.
He led from the front and helped to gun down all the eight terrorists before he was tragically
hit by a bullet and killed.
Q.5. How do we know that Colonel Vasanth was a true hero?
A.5. Colonel Vasanth was a courageous Indian Army officer who laid down his life for his
country. He always led his men from the front and the motto of this brave officer was, ‘I go
where my men go’. He taught his soldiers to be humane even towards ex-militants. All these
qualities make him a true hero.

Q.1. Why does the poet refer to Mahatma Gandhi as an enlightened person?
A.1. The poet refers to Mahatma Gandhi as an enlightened person because he was a man of
honour and great ideals. He fought against the British without using violence. With his policy
of non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi forced the British to quit India.
Q.2. How did Mahatma Gandhi leave his imprint on the annals of history?
A.2. Mahatma Gandhi left his imprint on the annals of history by winning the war for India’s
freedom without using a sword or a gun. He used ‘Ahimsa’, the strength of his inner peace to
drive the British from the country.
Q.3. What is bloodless revolution? What was the thought behind this revolution?
A.3. Bloodless revolution is a revolution without violence. The thought behind this revolution
was to show the British the power of ‘Ahimsa’ and achieve freedom through non-violence.
Mahatma Gandhi’s weapon of non-violence became a major tool in the struggle for
independence.
Q.4. What do you think will happen if we ignore Mahatma Gandhi’s message?
A.4. Mahatma Gandhi taught that we should not discriminate against people on the basis of
caste or religion and stand united as Indians. If we ignore his message of peaceful co-
existence and of being united as Indians we will not be a strong nation and will have to pay a
heavy price.
Q.5. What does the poet dream of in the poem, ‘A True Satyagrahi’?
A.5. The poet dreams of Mahatma Gandhi to be born again and save the country from
terrorists, corrupt politicians and smugglers. The poet urges Gandhiji to find a solution to
these problems and restore India to its ultimate glory.

I hope this letter finds you and mom in good health and happiness. I am fine and my studies
are going well. You will be glad to know that our school has arranged an educational tour to
Agra for the students of our class. We shall visit different places of historical importance there,
under the guidance of our teachers.

It is a weeklong trip. Many of my classmates are also going on this trip. As I don’t want to miss
such a golden opportunity, kindly permit me to join them. I hope you will not ignore my
request. I will need a sum of rupees three thousand to meet the expenses of this tour. I will be
eagerly waiting for your permission.
