1) EXT – SWIMMING POOL – DAY

JAKE is jumping into the swimming pool while DAYLIGHT - DAVID

KUSHNER is playing.
Everyone cheering in background.

CUT TO:

He blacks out and gets flashbacks about his dad beating his
mom.

CUT BACK:
JACOB
(Snapping fingers)
Jake... Bro snap out of it... What happened?

JAKE
Sorry bro. My head is just on another place.
COACH
Jake you need to work harder if you want to win this championship.
The whole school is counting on you.

2) EXT/INT – CAR – DAY

Jake sees his mom is in tears with bruise marks on her body as
he climbs into the car. He gets mad and asks her about what
happened.

JAKE
(Concerned)
Mom what happened...? Did he do this to you (shows to bruise)?

MOM
Don’t worry about it... How was your day at school?

JAKE
Don’t Change the topic mom. I need to know.
MOM
(Starts to cry out loud)
Please just leave it...He is a good man.

JAKE
No man should lift his hands towards a woman. That doesn’t
make him a man.

3) EXT – SCHOOL HALLWAY – DAY

CATHERINE and VIOLET is talking to Jake. Jake doesn’t want to

talk to them until EMILY walks past them and accidentally
bumps into JACOB running to tell Jake about something and
accidentally drops her school books. Jake helps her pick up
her books. Catherine and Violet rolls their eyes and walks
away.

JAKE
Let me help you... I’m Jake. I haven’t seen you around. Are
you new here?

EMILY
H I’m Emily. I’m new. I just started here.

JAKE
(Sees her timetable)
I see we have first period together. Let me go show you where
the class is.

EMILY
(Shy)
Thanks

CUT TO:
4) INT – CLASS - DAY
Emily is describing Jake and how she is starting to fall in
love with him.
The scene shows her looking at him in first period while she
sits across from him while she smiles at him when they lock
eyes.

JACOB
(Sitting next to Jake)(Whispering)
Bro. What do you think about the new girl?

JAKE
She looks like a nice girl.

JACOB
(Mocks Jake)
I think she has the eyes for you.

JAKE
(Jake looks back at Emily)
No she’s just being nice.

JACOB

Are you coming to church Sunday?

JAKE
Yeah I’ll be there.

EMILY (V/O)
His name is Jake. The best swimmer in school. All the girls
freaks out about him... I don’t usually like guys like this.
You know the popular type. But there is something different
about him. I don’t know what. But I would like to find out.

5) EXT – SWIMMING POOL – DAY

Jake and Jacob are standing in the swimming pool talking about
Emily.

JACOB
Bro I think you should ask her out on a date.

JAKE
I don’t know. I don’t think I’m her type.

JACOB
(Climbs out of pool helps Jake get out by lending him a hand)
You will never know if you never try.

JAKE
I guess you’re right.
CUT TO:

6) EXT – LOCKERS – DAY

Jake is going to his Locker to get his stuff when he sees

Catherine and Violet bullying Emily. Slamming the locker door
in her face.

CATHERINE
(Slams locker door)
Leave Jake alone. He is mine.

VIOLET
Yeah he is the most popular in school, don’t even think he
would go for someone like you.

CATHERINE
If you don’t leave him alone you and I are going to have some
big problems

EMILY
Don’t worr...

JAKE
(Interrupt her before she could finish her sentence)
What’s going on here?

VIOLET
Nothing we’re just having a normal conversation.

JAKE
Leave her alone go find someone else to bully...
Don’t let them get to you.

EMILY
Thank you. You are my hero.

JAKE
No problem... Just promise me you won’t listen to a thing they
say they always do this to everyone.

EMILY
I promise.

JAKE
(Wanting to ask her out but doesn’t find the courage)
Hey... Enjoy your weekend

EMILY
Thanks you too.

7) INT – CHURCH – DAY

Jake and Jacob are sitting in church listening to the pastor

preaching about darkness and light. Emily walks into the
church and asks if she could sit next to them. Jacob tells
Jake that this is his chance.

JACOB
(Whispering)
This is your chance. Go talk to her after church

EMILY
Hey. Do you mind if I sit here.

JAKE
No not at all.

CHURCH SERVICE BEGINS.

PASTOR
Welcome church today I’m going to talk to you about the topic
Darkness and Light.
Now the darkness may look strong and impossible to get out of
but once there is light you will see. Jesus says in John 8:12
I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never
walk in darkness. Let him be your source of Light and let him
lead you on you dark paths.

CUT TO:

8) EXT – OUTSIDE CHURCH – DAY

JAKE
Did you enjoy the service?

EMILY
Yeah I enjoyed it a lot.

JAKE
I didn’t know you were so religious.

EMILY
To be honest with you. Jesus changed my life. He’s the reason
why I’m still here today.

JAKE
I like that about you... How would you like to go on a date
with me?

EMILY
I would love that.

JAKE
(Takes her phone and type his number in)
Here is my number... Send me a text.

9) INT – CLASS – DAY

Jake and Emily is texting each other. Jacob congratulates Jake.
TEACHER scolds them for being on their phone.

JAKE
(Gets a text)

(Hey, let me know when and where and I’m there for the date 😉)

Typing: Hey, can I pick you up at 7pm Saturday?

(See you then)
(Looks behind him smiling at Emily)

JACOB
Why are you smiling like that...? Who are you texting?

JAKE
Guess who has a date on Saturday...? This guy (shows at himself
touches shirt)

JACOB
Look at you. W rizz man. (Dabs Jake)

TEACHER
(Teacher takes their phones)
Jake, Emily give me your phones.

10) INT – JAKE’S ROOM – NOON

Jake is getting ready for his date. Asks his mom if they could
go fetch her.
They went to go fetch Emily.

JAKE
Mom I’m ready to go.

MOTHER (O/S)
Meet me in the car.

CUT TO:

11) EXT – EMILY’S HOUSE – NOON

Jake knocks on their door shakes her dad’s hand and asks his
permission to take Emily out.

JAKE
(Shake dad’s hand)
Hello sir I’m here to pick up Emily

EMILY’S DAD
Just make sure you are back at 10 and don’t break my girl’s
heart or I’ll break you.

JAKE
I promise I won’t sir. Thank you so much. See you at 10

CUT TO:

Jake opens the door for her to climb in. Mother starts the
car.
12) EXT – JAKE’S BACKYARD – NIGHT

Jake blindfolds her leading her to the picnic under the stars
with fake candles lit around them. Jacob is their waiter.

JAKE
Just trust me...Sit down here... Okay open your eyes.

EMILY
Wow Jake you really didn’t have to do all this... It’s
beautiful.

JAKE
(Claps hands)
Waiter!!

JACOB (waiter)
How can I help you?

EMILY
(Laughs)
How did you get him to do it?

JAKE
Well he needed help with his Math so we made a deal he helps
me I’ll help him prepare for the exam.

EMILY
Now Jake when is the championship?

JAKE

It’s actually really close. It’s happening next week. You

should come. I would love to have you there.

EMILY
I wouldn’t miss it for the World.

Emily and Jake laugh and enjoy their night. (Scene fades out
with grasshopper sounds)

13) EXT – SWIMMING POOL – DAY

It’s the day of the championship. The crowd goes wild. The
sound of water splashing and the loudspeaker is heard. Emily
and Jake’s mom is in the crowd to cheer for him.
JAKE
I’m glad you could make it.

EMILY
Good luck out there

JAKES
Thanks.

ANNOUNCER
Now for the moment we’ve all been waiting for. The
Championship is almost starting. All swimmers please come and
report to your starting points.

JAKE
That’s my queue see you later.

EMILY
(Gives him a cross necklace)
Here... It’s for good luck.

CUT TO:

The Championship is about to start. Jake has the ARM BRACELET

AROUND HIS ARM ready to dive in. The sound of the Flare gun
goes off and they dive in. Jake is in the lead. Emily stands
at the edge of the pool looking and cheering for Jake. Jake
wins the championship and stands on the podium and is given
his Golden Medal

ANNOUNCER
And the winner of this year’s championship is... Jake!!!
(Crowd goes wild)

CUT TO:

CATHERINE

I told you to leave him alone now you are going to have to
pay.

VIOLET
We tried to warn you. But you wouldn’t listen.

The bullies lush her into the swimming pool. Emily can’t swim.
Jake is too busy receiving his medal. Emily screams help. Help
and Jack come running along.

EMILY
(Splashing and busy sinking)
Help! Help!!!

Jake runs up to her and a dive into the pool pulling Emily out
the water Jacob helps him lay her down on the floor. He starts
doing CPR. The loud chaos echoes out into a static beep sound.

CUT TO:

14) INT – DARK ROOM – UNKNOWN

Jake and Emily are both in a dark room. Euphoria is playing in the
background. Emily lights up a candle, lights Jake’s candle and then
blows her candle out.

CUT TO:

15) EXT – OUTSIDE CHURCH – DAY

The sound of church bells is heard in the background

indicating that Emily had passed. There are people standing
around her grave.

EMILY MOM
Jake, I found this in Emily’s room. She wrote this to you
before she passed.

Jake opens the letter and reads it out aloud.

JAKE
(Reads letter)(Sad, tears in eye)
My dearest Jake, I know about the situation with your parents.
I know it can be hard sometimes but you just have to follow
the light. God knows what the right thing to do is. Let him
lead you like he leaded me to you. Love Emily

EMILY’S MOM
(Hugs Jake)
I’m so sorry Jake...

Come on let’s go.

Everyone gets a candle and stars lighting it.

JAKE (V/O)
It’s so much darker when a light goes out than it would have
been if it had never shone.

CUT TO:

16) EXT – JAKE’S HOUSE – NIGHT

Police lights are seen. Jake’s dad is being arrested. Jake hugs his
mom knowing that they are safe.

JAKE
He will never hurt us again mom.

MOTHER
You did the right thing. I love you so much.
CUT TO:

The scene cuts back to the scene where Emily died. A voice over of
Jake is heard in the background. Jake gets Flashbacks of everything
that happened to him. Something in the orange is heard in the
background.

JAKE (V/O)
Darkness cannot drive out Darkness

CUT TO:

A flashback of Jake’s dad beating his mom is shown

CUT TO:

JAKE (V/O)
Only light can do that.

Flashback of candle being lit in dark room.

CUT TO:

JAKE (V/O)
Hate cannot drive out Hate.

Flashback shows Catherine and Violet bullying Emily

CUT TO:

JAKE (V/O)
Only love can do that.

Flashback of the scene where Emily drowned.

CUT BACK:
17) EXT – SWIMMING POOL – DAY

Shows the pool for the final time.

JAKE (V/O)
This was the day when she lost her light. There’s no one to
blame. But at least she gave me a reason to shine. She added
the light in my darkness. And now... Now I’m free.
