16. A ship left island X at 2:00 a.m. It travelled north at a speed of 25 km/h for an hour and
arrived at lighthouse A. Then it travelled east at a speed of 40 km/h for half an hour and
arrived at lighthouse B. Finally it headed north again at a speed of 30 km/h for one and a
half hours to island Y.
(a) (i) Draw a simple diagram to represent the route taken by the ship and label the
respective positions of the islands X and Y and lighthouses A and B. (3 marks)
(ii) Calculate the distances of each sub-path travelled by the ship. Then label them
onto the diagram drawn in (a) (i). (3 marks)
(b) Find the distance between islands X and Y (correct to 4 significant figures). (5 marks)
(c) After staying at island Y for 1 and a half hours to refuel, the ship returned back to
island X at a speed of 21 km/h, using the shortest route back. What will be the earliest
time (correct to the nearest 5 minutes) for the ship to arrive at island X? (5 marks)

17. The figure shows a square ABCD with sides 5 cm. Using D as the centre, an arc CE is
drawn.
(a) Find the perimeter and the area of sector CDE. (8 marks)

19. Mr. Yuen bought an air-conditioner at $12000. The depreciation rate is 18% per year.
(a) What will be the percentage decrease in the air-conditioner’s value after two years?
(correct your answer to 2 decimal places) (4 marks)
(b) As the manufacturer wanted to attract customers, it offered a 2-year free maintenance
service to Mr. Yuen. If the air-conditioner was properly maintained, its depreciation
rate was reduced to 12% per annum. What was the difference between the new value
of the air-conditioner if it was and was not properly maintained till the end of the 2nd
year? (correct to the nearest dollar) (5 marks)
(c) 2 years passed and the manufacturer invited Mr. Yuen to extend its maintenance
service at $600 per year. If you were Mr. Yuen, would you take such an offer? Why or
why not? (Please give brief reasons and explanation) (4 marks)

20. The following figure shows an equilateral triangle ABC with each side x units. D is a point
on BC such that AD is perpendicular to BC.
