Pattern Making Tools

Creating Garment or sewing pattern you can’t do without its tools. You need the right tools for
perfect pattern. You should know all the tools and their uses. In this article you will get to know all
the tools with functions.

List of patterns making tools and their uses for pattern maker.

1. Pattern Paper: - it varies in weight; light weight paper is used for develop first pattern and
then grading is done on heavy weight paper.

2. Measuring Tape; - It is used to measure the body measurement.

3. Pencil, eraser and sharpener; - it is use in drafting the pattern.


4. Pen: - of different color to wright the information on pattern and marking.
5. Paper Scissors: - use to use the drafted pattern.
6. Straight Ruler: - it is best for marking or taking straight line or any measurement.

7. L-scale: - It is Also Called tri-scale and is made of wood or steel. It has one arm, which
measures 12″ and the other arm is 24″. It is used for drafting perpendicular lines.

8. Hip curve: - it is use to make shape of hip as its name.


9. Leg curve: - it is use to give shape of leg.

10. French curve: -it is use marking shape of neck, sleeve, armhole and another curve.

11. Stapler: - used during cutting of paper pattern to hold it.


12. Scotch tape: - to join tow paper pattern

13. Tracing wheel: - to transfer pattern shape into paper.


14. Notcher: -to indicate seam allowance, centre line dart leg and other specific point in pattern.

15. Metal weight: - it holds the paper during drafting the pattern.
