What's the weather like? - Key
A A A A VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT

1- The weather

Students can work alone and check in pairs or work in pairs. Go through the answers with the class. Model
pronunciation.

1. It's sunny. 2. It's raining. 3. It's snowing. 4. It's windy.

5. It's hot. 6. It's cold. 7. It's cloudy. 8. It's stormy.
Students can work in pairs, or individually if this is more convenient. Have them cover up the weather words. To
play the video, either download and open the video file, enter the video link in a web browser or scan the printed
QR code with a mobile device (make sure you have a QR code reader app installed as well as internet access).
Alternatively, if your students are smartphone users, have them access the video with their own devices. Have the
students take turns to ask and answer the question about each video clip. Encourage them to form slightly more
complex sentences where possible, e.g. `It's hot and sunny.' Go through the answers.

Have the students complete sentences 1-6 for homework if you do not have the means to play the video in the
lesson.

1. It's snowing.
2. It's hot and sunny.
3. It's windy and cloudy.
4. It's stormy.
5. It's raining.
6. It's cloudy.

The students answer the question `What's the weather like today?' For a more able class, present qualifying
adverbs such as `a little', `a bit', `quite' and `very'. For example, `Today it's a little cold and it's quite cloudy.'

2- What's the weather like in your country?

Students read the dialogue in pairs. Encourage correct pronunciation and intonation. Students take turns to ask
and talk about the weather in their countries. Encourage the use of adverbs of frequency during this activity (never,
hardly ever, rarely, sometimes, often, usually, always). This exercise is a good opportunity for students to practise
adverbs of frequency with the verb `be', which they studied in the worksheet `Free time'.

Point out the difference between `It's raining' (the rain is pouring down now) and `It's rainy' (it is likely to rain), but
do not get into too much detail if the students have not studied the present continuous tense. The same applies to
`It's snowing'/`It's snowy'. It may be easier for students to simply learn `It's raining' when talking about the present
and `It's often rainy in winter' when talking about general conditions.
