Scenario
With the economic and residential development of areas around Chandrika Kumarathunga Mawatha, lot of
traffic has diverted to the existing road. This leads to the deterioration of the existing road pavement by leaps
and bond. Therefore the existing road has to be redesigned considering the current and future traffic demand.
“Maga” is a C1 graded well reputed construction company which undertakes large scale Road projects in Sri
Lanka. For their projects they recruit technical officers who have sound technical skills and management skills
to run their projects efficiently. Assume you are a young technical officer graduated from CINEC campus and
recruited by “Maga” for the redesign of Chandrika Kumarathunga Mawatha. You have been asked to perform
following tasks.
Task 01
For the redesign of the Chandrika Kumarathunga Mawatha, authorities are expecting to do a traffic study to
enhance the capacity of the road considering the future demand.
1a) (LO1.1)
If you have been asked to collect appropriate data for the capacity design what kind of data do you collect?
1e) (LO2.3,)
Examine factors within projects which may require further investigation by observing existing conditions.
1f) (LO 4.1, LO 4.2, D1)
What are the different types of options available for the pavement design? Refine one of them considering
appropriate justifications.
1h) (LO3.3,)
Estimate the capital cost of the project by considering a 1km length considering the design cross section.
(You have to show the step by step cost estimation for each component and each layer)
1i) (LO3.4,)
Develop an overall programme for the completion of projects by considering construction sequence.
