TITLE OF ASSIGNMENT: IPv6 & GNS3

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

This is an individual submission and must be your own work.

There are two tasks. You must complete all tasks.

General advice
• You are required to back up your work regularly onto your N: drive and on removable storage
devices. Always check the date-stamp on your files before submission.
• You must submit your work using the software versions we currently have on the University’s
network.
TASK 1: IPv6

Initially for this section you are to provide a brief comparison between IPv4 and IPv6, highlighting
the benefit/reasoning for any changes that have been made and any additional functionality added
to IPv6.

Observe the following statement:

“If you upgrade to IPv6, a lot of resources will become free, and you will essentially double your
network’s capability – if not more!”

Discuss this statement – is there validity to this statement?

Note: You are expected to provide illustrative examples for any point(s) made.

(~1000 Words)
[40 Marks]
TASK 2: GNS Sim

Observe the figure below:

Figure 1: Multi Site VLAN Network

A Client has drafted out a multi-site VLAN and has tasked you to implement a working simulation via
the GNS3 simulator and the VyOS v1.18 router image.

Refer to Appendix A for your designated LAN-IP allocations, which you must use.

For this task you are to implement and simulate the network and produce a detailed write up of
each step/ command along with a brief explanation of each step/ command.

You must have at least computer node in each LAN to receive “testing messages”.

In support of your task, you are also requested to provide proof of each step working through the
use of displayed outputs of console/ packet captures.

The true aim here is that your write up will be used by the client to firstly re-create the simulation
and then implement a real-life network – hence all screen shots taken must match your given LAN-IP
allocations to reduce confusion.

Note: You are not required to provide any simulation files.

Note: Any mismatching configuration/ screen shots will not count towards your mark.

(~1000 Words)
[40 Marks]

Quality of report presentation, assumptions, proper referencing, etc.

[20 Marks]
Mark Distribution:

Task Detail Marks

1 40
Simple – comparison made in partial depth, with some examples. 0-10
As above semi – complete comparison made – with examples. Some comments made on 10-25
the statement.
As above, complete comparison made, a good discussion that supports (or not) the 25-40
statement.

2 40
A simple VLAN (No multi-site), along with a partial write up. 0-15
As above, with multi-site usage used (but may have errors/ mal configurations) along with 15-30
a semi-complete write up.
As above VLAN + multi-site areas used along with complete write up. 30-40

Quality of report presentation, assumptions, proper referencing, etc. 0-20

MAX TOTAL 100

Task 1
Percentage Description
Complete: Excellent, complete comparison, and statement discussed well showing
75-100
clear direction of support. All with examples for every point.
Good: An in-depth comparison made (with examples), with an attempt to discussion
50-75
the statement.
25-50 Fair: A high level comparison made, with an initial discussion of statement.
Poor: A basic level comparison / description made.
1-25
0 No Attempt

Task 2
Percentage Description
Complete: Excellent, A complete level of documentation but with all VLAN criteria
75-100
met.
50-75 Good: A good - complete level of documentation but with most VLAN criteria met.
25-50 Fair: A good level of documentation but not all VLAN criteria met.
1-25 Poor: A minimal level/ incomplete writeup / VLAN
0 No Attempt
INDICATIVE TIMELINE FOR PLANNING:

Timeline
Duration Task/Tips
Task 1; Perform initial research & write up on IPv4/6 – look to slides & prep videos to
start your search and aid key word discovery.
1.5-2 days
Task2; Create your simulation ideally start with single area, refer to prior labs in
addition to your own research to perform this task.
Task 1; Time allocated to perform & write up on the IPv4/IPv6 comparison.
1-1.5 days
Task2; Implement & replicate Area 1 & 2 and test for functional correctness.
Task 1; Time allocated for the discussion.
2-3 days
Task2; Time allocated to produce write up.

You should be adding to your write up as you go along so as to, at any point have
material to submit. The suggested timeframes are indicative, you may want
*
to revisits parts and tweak your work – keep this in mind when you plan for
this assessment.

FORMATTING OF SUBMISSION:

You are to upload your written report onto Bb (Turnitin), a bucket/ link will be
provided in the same location where you downloaded this assignment.

Any screen shots, tables, figures, charts, illustrations, etc. will not contribute
towards the word count.

Your work must be adequately referenced throughout, using Harvard

referencing style. Pears & Shields (2016) give a complete guide to Harvard
referencing. Guidelines on using the Harvard Referencing style are available
at:
https://www.canterbury.ac.uk/library/docs/harvard.pdf
https://www.canterbury.ac.uk/library/citing-references/citing-references.aspx
The report must be submitted using the dedicated Blackboard grade centre
submission bucket on or before the submission deadline.
LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSED (Fully or Partially):

Learning Outcomes of this module:

1. Apply analytical/simulation techniques to carry out tests on the operational status of

a data communication network
2. Analyse the appropriateness of available communication technologies and related
infrastructure to support particular data communication needs
3. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the state of the art in transmission
technologies that are used to build contemporary data communication networks and
their underlying protocol architectures
4. Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of existing network infrastructure
considering technical, as well as social needs

GRADUATE / EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS GAINED:

This assessment is an opportunity to develop an understanding of the

operation and impact of networks.

In depth knowledge should be gained, providing insight into the cutting edge
of technology to date.

All tasks build on skills and knowledge required in industry, namely

researching a problem (analysis), developing an idea (conception/ design/
communication) and documentation (though informal).

This assessment has been designed to exercise your abilities to work on your
own and progress closer to becoming a proficient self-learner.
