Date 17-10-2023
Start time 14:00 End time 16:00

Exam Regulations
1. Before the start of the examination students should place bags and/or coats in the designated area.
Whenever possible, unapproved resources (e.g., smart watches, wearables, notes) must be placed in the
bags and switched off.
2. Students may not leave during the first 30 minutes and the last 15 minutes of the official period of
examination.
3. The student ID card1 should be placed visibly on the table throughout the exam and presented to the
examiner/invigilator upon a request for identification.
4. During the examination students may only have access to resources (e.g., books, notes, devices, websites,
hard/software) that are explicitly approved by the examiner. Possessing or accessing unapproved resources
is considered attempted fraud.
5. During the examination students are not allowed to communicate (e.g., verbal, non-verbal, digital) with
others aside from the examiner/invigilator. You can only ask the examiner/invigilator for extra paper or
notify a medical reason. Any violation of this will be considered attempted fraud.
6. Only the answers on the answer sheets are considered valid.
7. When notifying mistakes in your exam please raise your hand for the teacher. It is not allowed to ask for
clarifications or explanations during the exam.
8. During the examination students are not allowed to copy, share and/or spread the exam questions, answers
or related information in any form. The examiner/invigilator has the right to check this. Any violation of this
will be considered attempted fraud.
9. In case of attempted fraud, the student may finish the exam and the fraud will be reported during and/or
after the exam.
10. The examination officially starts and ends at the instigation of the examiner/invigilator. When the end is
announced, all students should stop writing. Students should follow the procedure for handing in their
results as announced by the examiner/invigilator.
11. All examination papers (e.g., questions, answer sheets and scrap paper) must be provided with student
name and TPC student number and handed in by the students at the end of the examination.
12. Students should follow any additional rules and procedures announced by the invigilator or teacher. Any
failure to do so will be reported.

1 Failing that, a certified ID is also allowed. This applies to students who forgot their student card or (in rare cases) do not yet have one. A certified ID is a passport, driver’s
license, or any other official proof of identity that bears both the student’s name and a photograph.
Midterm Term 1 – Mathematics for Engineering

Date: 17-10-2023
Time: 14:00 – 16:00 (120 minutes)

Please read carefully:

This exam consists of 6 exercises, for a total number of 42 points. At each exercise,
it is indicated how many points can be obtained for this question. This is also
indicated for each sub-question. Your grade will be calculated using the formula:
number of obtained points
Exam grade = ⋅ 90 + 10.
42

Allowed material: Pen, pencil, geotriangle (protractor), ruler, eraser, compass.

Clearly state how you arrive at your answers. In case you do not provide clear
computations/explanations, 0 points will be awarded for that question. Always
simplify your answer as much as possible, unless stated otherwise.

Perhaps more important, we wish you good luck with the exam!

Sum and difference identities

sin(𝑡 + 𝑢) = sin(𝑡) cos(𝑢) + cos(𝑡) sin(𝑢).
sin(𝑡 − 𝑢) = sin(𝑡) cos(𝑢) − cos(𝑡) sin(𝑢).
cos(𝑡 + 𝑢) = cos(𝑡) cos(𝑢) − sin(𝑡) sin(𝑢).
cos(𝑡 − 𝑢) = cos(𝑡) cos(𝑢) + sin(𝑡) sin(𝑢).

Product-to-Sum formulas
1
cos(𝑡) cos(𝑢) = (cos(𝑡 − 𝑢) + cos(𝑡 + 𝑢)).
2
1
sin(𝑡) cos(𝑢) = (sin(𝑡 + 𝑢) + sin(𝑡 − 𝑢)).
2
1
sin(𝑡) sin(𝑢) = (cos(𝑡 − 𝑢) − cos(𝑡 + 𝑢)).
2
1
cos(𝑡) sin(𝑢) = (sin(𝑡 + 𝑢) − sin(𝑡 − 𝑢)).

Sum-to-product formulas
𝑡+𝑢 𝑡−𝑢
sin(𝑡) + sin(𝑢) = 2 sin ( ) cos ( ).
2 2
𝑡−𝑢 𝑡+𝑢
sin(𝑡) − sin(𝑢) = 2 sin ( ) cos ( ).
2 2
𝑡+𝑢 𝑡−𝑢
cos(𝑡) − cos(𝑢) = −2 sin ( ) sin ( ).
2 2
𝑡+𝑢 𝑡−𝑢
cos(𝑡) + cos(𝑢) = 2 cos ( ) cos ( ).

Double-Angle identities
sin(2𝑡) = 2 sin(𝑡) cos(𝑡).
cos(2𝑡) = cos 2 (𝑡) − sin2 (𝑡) = 2 cos2 (𝑡) − 1 = 1 − 2 sin2 (𝑡).
