TOPIC 4: BIOCATALYSIS
BIOLOGY UNIT, KOLEJ MATRIKULASI MELAKA

1 The effect of temperature on enzyme activity is shown in FIGURE 1.

Temperature (°C)

FIGURE 1

a) Describe the activity of enzyme at 0°C and 40°C.

[2 marks]
At 0°C : activity of enzyme is inactive
At 40°C : activity of enzyme is at maximum

b) Explain the activity of enzyme if the temperature exceeds 40°C.

[2 marks]
Activity of enzyme will be decreased and will stop because enzyme is denatured at
high temperature.

c) State another ONE factor that will have similar effect as shown by the temperature
above.
[1 mark]
pH value

d) Name TWO cofactors that are required by some enzymes to facilitate their activities.
[2 marks]
- Metal ion activators
- coenzymes

e) Explain what happen if a competitive inhibitor is added to an enzymatic reaction.

[3 marks]
The competitive inhibitor will bind to an active site of the enzyme. This will prevent
substrate from bind to active site. Enzyme-subtrate complex cannot form. Thus,
product do not form. Hence, rate of reaction will slow down.
