The whole earth is

my birthplace and all

humans are my brothers.
Kdhlil Gibran, artist, poet,

and philosopher, was a

prophet.
Long before peace, broth-

erhood, and ecology became

critical issues of the day,

Gibran told us of their im-

portance. He spoke out for

life.

In simple language, Gi-

bran spoke patterns of hap-
piness. With gentle words,
he expressed his profound
love for God ^\nd His crea-

tion.

Kiihlil Gibran was born in

Lebanon in 1883 and died

PATTERNS OF HAPPINESS
The earth
is like a beautiful bride

who needs no man-made jewels

to heighten her loveliness

but is content

with the grtcn verdure

of her fields,

and the golden sands

of her seashores,

and the precious stones

on her mountains.
Humanity
is a brilliant river

singing its way

and carrying wnth it

the mountain's secrets

into the heart of the sea.

We may change
with the seasons,

but the seasons

will not change us.

The just is close

to the people's hearts,

but the merciful

is close to the heart of God.

*vV vt,
My thought
IS 3 tender leaf

that sways
In every direction
and finds pleasure
in its swayings.
A ircc grown in a cave

does not bear fruit.

Life IS an island

in an ocean of loneliness,

an island whose rocks are hopes,

whose frees are dreams,

whose flowers solitude.

The whole earth
IS my birthplace

and all humans

are my brothers.

Perplexity

Is the begiTining

of knowledge.
Does the song
of the sea

end at the shore

or in the hearts

of those who listen to it?

Beauty is

that which attracts

the soul,

and that which

loves to give

and not to receive.

In one drop of water
are found the secrets

of all the endless oceans.

He who has not looked
on Sorrow will ntvcr see Joy.
In the depth of my souL
there is a wordless song.
Music IS the laTiguage

of the spirit.

It opens the secret of h'fe,

bringing peace,
abolishing strife.
Our appearance,
our words,
our actions
are never greater

than ourselves.

For the soul

is our house,-
our eyes its windows,.

and our words

its messengers.

at the age of 48. He devoted

his life to the pursuit of in-

ner happiness. Not for him-

self, but for all men. And he
did not leave the world un-
touched. In life and in death,
his teachings have attracted
millions of ardent disciples.
The philosophy taught by
Gibran reflects the wisdom
of the ancients. His style is

comparable to the writings

in the Koran, the Bible, and
the Talmud.
Patterns of Happiness is a
collection of some of Gi-
bran's thoughts on the
deeper meanings of life.

Thoughts to elevate the

spirit with hope and fill the

heart with joy. In his words,

thoughts that "have a

higher dwelling place than

the visible world."
