INTRODUCTION
SMIDS uses two GEOLOG sensors (The GEOLOG is a satellite based replacement
for a traditional ship's Dual Axis log. It gives speed over the ground in the direction of
the bow, as well as lateral speed) to measure bow and stern ground speeds. SMIDS
gives fore and aft and athwart ships speed at Bow and Stem. It replaces traditional
Doppler docking aids.
Satellite receivers are located fore and aft each independently calculating position of
bow and stern together with bow and stern movement over the ground. (Or across
the surface)! The data is passed to all the SMIDS display instruments and each
instrument independently processes the data and displays it.
Vacuum fluorescent graphic display modules present the data in figures and arrows
similar to that expected of traditional docking Systems but with some extras.
There are other modules involved in a SMIDS fit to control the satellite sensors,
combine and distribute the data, generate 200 pulses per mile and process the gyro.
SYSTEM SPECIFICATION
ACCURACY
Based on that of Ashtech/Thales GG24 GPS Glonass receiver based on actual tests
given in Ashtech specification and through consultation with Ashtech personnel.
Speed accuracy relies on the availability of at least a combination of 6 GPS/Glonass
satellites.
Mean Velocity is better than +/- 0.01 knots 95% 0.03 knots.
SMIDS is programmed to improve these figures.
There may be on rare occasions where the lack of GLONASS and GPS satellites will
cause the speed calculations to become inaccurate. In these instances the speed
indications on the displays will go blank and the total satellite indications will flash.

HOW IT WORKS
The antenna with satellite sensors in rugged aluminium housing feed their data to the
main unit. The main unit distributes raw data to the various displays, along with 24v
power.
GEOLOG and SMIDS use both GPS and GLONASS satellites, and the heading from
the ships gyro. The data is subjected to special processing in the displays and main
unit. The result is speed accuracy equal if not better to ground tracking Doppler logs,
but with the advantage it does not suffer from turbulence and boundary layer effects.

If the door opens the “wrong way” it is possible to turn the chassis plate around to
make it open the other way. The housing must be grounded.
The GNSS regulator and control interfacing equipment should be installed indoors
whilst their enclosures are rated IP67 AMI do not warrant them weatherproof. If the
cable length requirement meant installing outside then ft the units inside a rugged
weatherproof box.
On a retrofit, replacing an existing log / Doppler system, the existing cable can be
used. It has been used on numerous refits successfully, but the communications
must be tested. Try and find a twisted pair for the data.
Ideally, ground the screen at the sending sensor end. When there is a break ground
the new cable at it's a starting point.
Generally numerous grounds are more beneficial than too few.
MOUNTING ANTENNAS
It is most important that the antennas have a wide view of the sky. Do not mount in a
position with a large mast shadow or you will tend to lose satellites during fast turns
as the shadow interrupts the view of satellites. Particularly at the bow ensure the
antenna is protected from heavy weather by fitting an appropriate plate or ring.
Do not install very close to satellite communication antennas, or in the direct close
field beam of RADARS.
SMIDS DISPLAY
Mount the display for best visibility and access. It should be mounted so that it can be
viewed from most positions on the bridge, and with consideration against the bright
sunlight. It should be within reach to be able to change the illumination level.
Even with the anti-glare filter, direct light reflected off the screen can ruin its
performance. Adjustment of angle in its trunnion may help reduce the effect of
reflections.

as the shadow interrupts the view of satellites. Particularly at the bow ensure the

A good place for the stern sensor on a VLCC is on the bridge wing.
Do not install very close to satellite communication antennas, or in the direct close
field beam of RADARS.
SMIDS DISPLAY
DISPLAY MODULE
It works on a high voltage (at low current) and is not suitable for use in damp wet
conditions. Thus the SMIDS displays should not be mounted outside without the
optional certified enclosure which can be supplied by AMI. The warranty does not
cover damage by corrosion, caused by water entry or unventilated humid conditions.
The input-output and all processing of the data is performed or the interface module.
The same module is used for the heading display KW991-HR,
Features are NMEA 0183 input and output, and a switched mode power supply. The
microprocessor circuit address and data bus are carried to the display module by
ribbon cable.
Self-explanatory LEDs on the PCB give confidence in the unit operating status. The
NMEA data output can be read on a PC and is a further source of test data.
The NMEA 0183 output can be used to drive other instruments, but this is normally
supplied by the SMIDS main unit, which uses the same software.
There is a note on the PCB to guide the connecting of RS232 instruments.
In normal operation the data input LED will flash merrily and the output LED will flash
at one second intervals.
ALARM OUTPUT
The CMOS drivers can deliver 5 mA to a low current audible alarm or to drive a high
power alarm via a low current relay.

PROGRAM OPERATION
It is the program in the EPROM that makes SMIDS and GEOLOG work. The input
data is in an AMI Marine proprietary format in order to separate similar data from bow
and stem sensors. The data can be read at 4800 baud to confirm it is being received
correctly.
The accuracy of speed display is due to the accuracy of the raw data from the bow
and stem sensors, although the SMIDS display improves on this by some filtering.
Transverse and longitudinal speeds are resolved with the use of gyro heading.
SMIDS makes two calculations per second.
The final longitudinal speed is the average of the bow and stem's individual speeds.
Therefore, in the case of one of the sensors delivering inaccurate speeds through a
fault such as a waterlogged antenna, switch it off so its erroneous speed is not
available.
EPROM UPDATE
SMIDS is continuously looking for ways to improve results. Changing the EPROM is
no special deal, and an EPROM extractor should be used. EPROM updates can be
sent by EMAIL in Intel hex format for programming locally. That is the easy way to
update SMIDS.
If you have any feedback, please let us know and we may well be able to include it
into future additions.

The KW991 display units only require 10 watts. So miniature-screened cable is all
that is required. Earth the screen at the main unit.
"DEMO MODE"
It can be very useful to operate the system in demo mode. Switch on the GRACIES
with SW1-2 set to TEST & DEMO. They will then generate messages with simulated
speed. Because the data changes in a predictable way you can use this test to verify
good quality communications from the bow, in particular.
You can also start the KW99l-HR heading instrument in demo mode by switching on
whilst holding the button.
The simulated data is good to exercise RADAR, ECDIS and any PC docking aid
display, which would otherwise stay near zero knots.
Switch off and set SW1-2 back to NORMAL when tests are finished
When SMIDS/GEOLOG speed is used for an ARPA and Water speed is not available
as an additional NMEA input then a notice should be fitted to the radar, to say it is
using ground speed and not water speed.

SWITCH ON!
Observe various LEDS flashing merrily in time with data. You can read the data on a
PC at the various input connectors and data test points. Reading this data is
essential in proving an installation or if you ask for any assistance.
OPERATION DESCRIPTION
LD3 Bow sensor data input. First it flashes unevenly until the satellite data
goes good. Then it flashes regularly at half-second intervals as Bow raw
data arrives, in time with LD4.
LD4 Stern sensor data input. This behaves like LD3.
LD5 Heading input from gyro via KW99I-HR heading repeater. It flashes at
least once per second. The data is ship's heading and rate of turn.
LD6 / LD7. Optional NMEA inputs for use with such as water speed log.

Pulses at 200 pulses per mile are generated, using the NMEA data from the
Speed/EM log. This simulates the function of logs that traditionally output speed in
the direction of the bow.
NOTE! If the LOG NMEA data is not available the Relays will not pulse.
The bow and stem antennas will probably not be on the centre line. Measure the
offsets and longitudinal separation of the antennas from a ship's plan (Usually found
on the bulkheads around the ship) then calculate the correction angle using
Pythagoras.
Switches SW2 and SW3 provide correction, which are a signed hexadecimal byte. 00
to FF hex, giving a correction of +/- 12.7 degrees. The following table will help.

This is the STARTUP / STATUS screen for the Console and the Head-up displays.
For some minutes after switch on the GPS/GLONASS data will not be available.
Note that when data is unavailable, the satellite position and status remains blank.
Note the number of satellites GLO/GPS for BOW and STERN, each figure indicates a
signal strength 0 to 5 for each satellite received.
A) NO MESSAGES
Seen on initial start up but will proceed through sequence to B.
If not then it is possible that: -
1 Loss of DC voltage at the relevant Sensor Interface – Check DC at Interface.
2 Defective Sensor Interface / NMEA data cable – Check data output at
Interface.
C) DATA RECEIVED
When the Almanac is sufficiently acquired then proceeds to D.

D) HEIGHT FIXED
The height becomes “FIXED” when the sensor considers its self reliable. This 2D
mode allows speed to be computed more accurately. Press to show the altitude
and geoidal separation.
Once HEIGHT FIXED is achieved, the display will after 10 seconds automatically
switch to SCREEN 2.
SATELLITE DATA
Speed is more accurate the more satellites are available. To let the user have a
ready “quality" or “reliability" indicator of speed the number of satellites is displayed.
Example "12" means a combination of Glonass and GPS satellites. The higher the
number the better. If 6 or less the indication will flash and the relevant speed may go
blank. On the Start up screen or Status screen 1, the signal strength for each satellite
used is displayed on a scale of 0 to 5.
DO NOT use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, as the filter material is soft and will
scratch easily.
POSSIBLE “PROBLEMS”
The repeater will indicate “CHECK ALIGNMENT” if it detects errors on the gyro
signals input. In that case investigate possible problems with the gyro
Retransmission Unit.

This display gives the same data as screen one on the Navigators Horizontal display.
The display indicates, heading, bow lateral speed, fore and aft
speed and stem lateral speed.
The standard unit is fitted with a plastic anti-glare display filter. This filter
material is soft the same as a computer screen and easily scratched. Anti-static
cleaning pads are available for cleaning computer screens available wherever
computers are sold. Keep a supply of them ready for use rather than anything
else
DO NOT use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, as the filter material is soft and will
scratch easily.

INTRODUCTION
A bright green vacuum fluorescent dot matrix display presents ships heading from
the gyro or magnetic compass. The VF display overcomes the disadvantages of
other electronic displays such as LCD, such that it can be seen in dark environments,
and has a higher contrast.
Screen presentations of heading are two TAPE displays, DIGITAL display and
DIGITAL with RATE OF TURN indicator, and OFF COURSE ALARM.
The unit connects to all standard gyro transmissions, and magnetic electronic
compasses. With two inputs, gyro and magnetic, the unit will change over to
magnetic if gyro fails. As an off course alarm it would normally receive only magnetic
compass heading, but can work from gyro or a second gyro.
SPECIFICATIONS
INPUT 2. NMEA 0183. All valid heading sentences, plus Cetrek and Yokogawa
4800 proprietary data.
The unit is not designed to be fitted permanently in exposed positions. The main
reason is that the high-voltage fluorescent screen will not tolerate any ingress of
moisture and we cannot guarantee 100% weatherproof.
Units damaged by outside use are not covered by warranty.

INSTALLATION NOTES
SITING
Pre-planning and fore thought is essential for the practical siting of the display for
best visibility and access. It should be mounted so that it can be viewed from most
positions on the bridge, and with consideration against the bright sunlight. It should
be within reach of the vertically challenged to be able to change the illumination level.
Even with the anti-glare filter, direct light reflected off the screen can ruin its
performance. Adjustment of angle in its trunnion may help reduce the effect of
reflections.
CONNECTIONS
Remove the lid of the unit taking care when detaching the cables from the interface
board. Use the levers to remove the ribbon cable connector.
GYRO INPUT
For M type transmission and 1:1 or 36:1 Synchro an additional PCB has to be fitted
to order. The standard interface can connect to M type with a suitable EPROM but of
resolution to 1/3rd degree only not 1/6th.
Use A-B to drive pure opto isolated NMEA 0183 receivers. Use A-0 to drive
computers and non-standard equipment. Earth the screen at the heading repeater.
D1 and D2 normally low and +5v on alarm. D3 normally +5v and 0v on alarm. The
drive capability is 10mA. It may be used to drive a low power audible alarm directly,
or to drive an external low power relay to switch a higher power alarm.
ALTERATIVE 5v OUTPUTS
These 5v outputs can be changed through the EPROM to give an output from the
following selection; 5v stepper output. Furuno clock and data output. Yokogawa data
output. Reversed heading output. Alarm output, “tick” output.

TESTING
If the heading turns the wrong way reverse one pair of phase wires i.e. S1 and S2.
Read the data output on a laptop PC or any other device that can read NMEA 0183.
It can give data in plain language, which is the prime source of faultfinding
information.

Hold for 3 seconds to enter alignment mode. Keep holding then use
INC and DEC to align heading. Heading MUST be aligned or the wrong
course will be displayed! Heading from an NMEA 0183 source can not
be changed here; you must change it at its source.
Press to accept a “CHECK ALIGNMENT” error message.
Press to save or clear Course to Steer.
Hold at “Switch On” to enter demonstration mode.
ALARM LOGIC
“GYRO FAIL” occurs after loss of gyro signal for several seconds.
The AUDIBLE alarm (if fitted) will sound on a heading fault ONLY if an alarm has
been set. To accept and cancel the audio alarm, press the button.

The alarm is OFF when disabled or the limit window is set to zero. The display and
audio alarms become active by toggling the button. The comparator alarm
compares the two heading inputs and ideally they should always stay the same. If
one input failed and the two diverged by more than the window setting, the alarm will
be raised.
If the second input is TRUE (gyro or SMIDS) the difference between the two is used
and displayed. If the second input is magnetic there could be a substantial fixed
difference between the two so the CCA allows for this and stores a correction to
make them equal at the time the alarm is enabled. (In effect applying correction for
variation and deviation at the time of pressing .
When the ship is on passage select the screen and open and increase the window
limits by using INC. ( to decrease it). Press to set the alarm. You will see the
bar indicate the divergence of the two headings. The alarm will be raised if the bar
passes the window limit lines. (You only need to come back to this screen to alter the
window limit lines).
The Compass Comparator Alarm will remain active with whatever screen you now
select. Thus you can now use it as a heading repeater on a tape display.
When you are going to change to a new course you do not disable the alarm, for both
inputs should stay synchronised. In a perfect world you need not switch the alarm off!
Unfortunately electronic magnetic compasses are prone to show errors as you
change course and location or pass close to large steel structures.
The standard unit is fitted with a plastic anti-glare display filter. This filter material is
soft the same as a computer screen and easily scratched. Anti-static cleaning pads
are available for cleaning computer screens available wherever computers are sold.
Keep a supply of them ready for use rather than anything else.
DISPLAY MODULE SCREEN
Clean the screen using Anti-static cleaning pads or lint free cloth and glass polish.
DO NOT use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, as the filter material is soft and will
scratch easily.
