- Assumed Background: English 3
- Course Description: A highly flexible and engaging course combining general language and skills development with exam preparation,
this course is designed to improve student’s English language proficiency from lower B2 to B2 or upper B2 level according to Common
European Framework of Reference. The course is compulsory for students whose majors are Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry,
Biology, Information Technology, but it is also recommended for those adult learners who may be planning for upper B1 or lower B2
examinations such as IELTS.
II. Learning Objectives
After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
- understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of
specialization;
- interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for
either party;
- produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and
disadvantages of various options.

Students can understand standard speech spoken at a normal rate and follow even complex lines of argument Listening
provided the topic is reasonably familiar. They can understand the essentials of lectures and most TV news and

current affairs programmes and can understand the majority of films in standard dialect.
At this level, students can understand articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers Reading
adopt particular stances or viewpoints. They can understand contemporary literary prose and can adapt style and
speed of reading to different texts and purposes, using appropriate reference-sources selectively.
Students can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers Spoken Interaction
quite possible. They are able to take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts and can account for and sustain
views clearly by providing relevant explanations and arguments.
They can present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest, expanding Spoken Production
and supporting ideas with subsidiary points and relevant examples. They can explain a viewpoint on a topical issue
giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
Students are able to write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to their interests. They can write an Writing
essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. They can
write letters highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences.

V. Assessment
1. Assessment summary
Assessment Tasks Due Dates Weighting Notes
Attendance 10% Regular attendance and punctuality are required. Students with excessive
Class attendance & absences recorded (over 20% of formal class contact hours) are not
participation eligible for the end-of-term test.

Writing and Every week Of all the writing and speaking tasks, at least one for each skill will be
speaking tasks graded. These two tasks and the mid-term test will be graded as follows:

30% The final score will account for 30% of the total score.

2. Assessment details:
Attendance: Students must attend all the class sessions for 80% of the total amount of class contact hours.

On-going assessment (30%)

A. Speaking tasks:

- Type: In-class

- Task description: Students will discuss the questions and follow the tasks assigned by teachers during classes and speaking workshops

B. Writing tasks:

- Type: Home assignment

- Due date: Assigned by the instructor

- Learning objective assessed: 4

- Task description: Students will do the tasks assigned weekly by instructors.

C. Mid-term test

* Reading:

- Type: In-class

- Task description: Students will read texts and answer questions and produce an academic paragraph of assigned topics.

* Listening

- Type: In-class

- Learning objectives assessed: 1

- Task description: Students will listen to different recordings and answer follow-up questions on the basis of what is stated or implied on
the recording.

End-of-term Test

All the four language skills will be tested.

VI. Course Policies


- Punctuality is required. Students who are 10 minutes late for class twice will be recorded as being absent once.
- Homework completion is compulsory. Students with 3 incomplete assignments will receive a failing grade.
- Requests for the granting of extensions must be made in writing via email to the lecturers at least 24 hours prior to the submission
date. The request must also contain documentation satisfactorily supporting the request. If an extension is approved, the new agreed
date for submission will be noted
- Items (for which no extension has been granted) submitted after the due date and time, incur a late submission penalty. The penalty is
at the rate of 2 marks (per day) of the total available marks for that particular piece of assessment.
- Students who are unable to sit or complete a scheduled final exam must apply for a deferred examination to the course coordinators.
- If some or all of your assignments is identified as plagiarism, you will be notified that your assignment was found to be plagiarized,
and you will fail the plagiarized assignment.
