1. SCOPE

The Pressure Vessel Dimension Inspection article provides information about the
dimensional requirements in pressure vessel construction and pressure vessel inspection.
Most fabrication and installation tolerances have not been addressed in ASME Code Section
VIII DIV1 and Div2. So we need to refer to other sources for inspection. This article provides
you the most important dimensional inspection requirements.

The dimensional check of a pressure vessel consists of the following items:

- Mill under tolerance of plates and pipes

- Tolerances for formed heads
- Out of roundness of shell
- Nozzles and attachments orientation
- Nozzles and attachments projection
- Nozzles and attachments elevation
- Nozzles and attachments levelness
- Weld mismatch
- Other manufacturing, fabrication and installation tolerances

4. Mill Under tolerance of Plates and Pipes

4.1. Pressure Vessel Dimension Inspection - Plate:

plates with 0.01 inch or 6% undertolerance, whichever is smaller, may be used for full
design pressure, instead of at the given design thickness specified.
However, if the material specification allows greater undertolerance, then the ordered
thickness for the material should be sufficiently greater.
For example, if you have SA 516 Gr.70 plate with a 0.625-inch nominal thickness, and the
actual thickness is 0.615, it is acceptable, and you may use this plate without any specific
design consideration.

4.2. Pressure Vessel Dimension Inspection - Pipe:

Contrary to the plate material, your pipe and tube mill under tolerances need to be taken
into account for design consideration.
Pipe and tube under tolerances are almost -12.5 % of the nominal wall thickness, but
sometimes there are differences for different materials, so for any specific material, it shall
be referred to the suggested pipe or tube material specification to obtain the exact amount
of mill under tolerances.
For example, if there is a pressure vessel with nominal shell thickness of 0.5 inch, it needs
a 6” SA 106 Gr.B nozzle to be attached to the shell plate.
Assume that external loading is not a design controlling factor (is not governor), so as our
minimum, nozzle thickness will be the same as the shell thickness.
So with a consideration of -12.5%, the calculation will be: 0.5 / 0.875 = 0.571 inches. So
when we refer to ASME B36.10 and select our pipe schedule it will be SA 106 Gr.B
Schedule 160
5. Base plate
Flatness and out of level for base plate shall be measured. Base on Reference no 7,
acceptable tolerance should be check in accordance with bellow:

a. Flatness ±1/16in ±1.58mm Fig 1

b. Out of Level ±1/8in ±3.1mm Fig 1

If the tolerances specified in the construction and installation Drawing of the equipment are
less than the tolerances specified in this document. Priority is given to project construction
and installation Drawing, Procedure and specification.

Fig.1) Base plate tolerance

6. Clip’s and bracket

The attachments welded to the equipment by the vendor for bolting the brackets for pipe
supporting ladder, stairway and other purpose are known as Pressure Vessel clips and
bracket’s. Fig. 2 shows typical clips for a pressure vessel. Pressure Vessel clips are used
mainly for supporting purposes.

Fig.2: Clips, Brackets

Vendor’s shall define dimension and type of clips and bracket and also distance of this
accessories to reference line. The tolerance shall be defined in Drawing in accordance with
standard Drawing of project. If the tolerance of vessel Drawing is smaller than value in this
document, they are priority.
Dimensional tolerance for clip’s and bracket’s is as bellow:

a. Distance to the reference line ±1/4in ±6.25mm Fig 2

b. Deviation circumferentially measured at the joint
±1/4in ±6.25mm Fig 2
of structure

c. Distance between two adjacent clips ±1/16in ±1.58mm Fig2

7. Nozzle and opening

Nozzle and opening design base on ASME VIII-Div1-(UG36-UG45). reference 7 have

mentioned the Nozzle in 3 categories.
Cat1: Man, way and Nozzle, coupling which are not to be connected to piping
Cat2: Man, way and Nozzle, coupling which are not to be connected to piping
Cat3: Nozzles, Couplings used for level gage level control, etc.
The nozzles and attachments levelness tolerances are not addressed in ASME Code SEC
VIII Div 1 and Div2, but in the pressure vessel handbook, a ½ ˚ deflection is permissible.
For levelness checking, a level gage is used. If the bubble is in the middle of the designated
lines, the nozzle is level.
But if the bubble intersects the designated limit lines, you need to run a simple calculation
and see if your deflection is within the tolerance limit.
we need to move one end of the level gage up to the bubble to be placed in middle. Then
measure the distance between the level gage end and the flange face. The measured value
is the X in the figure 3a.
Then obtain α, if α is less than 0.5˚, the deflection falls within the tolerances. And it
is OK otherwise it will require Re-assemble or/and Re-welding. measurement shall be done
before and after welding.
Measurement should be done before installation and be compared by QC Form of shop
fabrication.
Fig.3a: levelness checking of Nozzle

Nozzle and attachment projection are the length from the nozzle or the attachment face to
the vessel shell centerline.
Projection dimensions are addressed in general assembly drawings. The projection
tolerances are not addressed in ASME Code SEC VIII Div. 1, but if you refer to the
pressure vessel handbook, almost ± 0.25 of an inches is permissible.
In practical measurement, you may use a measuring tape to measure the distance between
the shell outside circumference to the nozzle face. Then the measured value is summed
with the shell thickness and the inside radius

Fig.3b: Nozzle Projection Measurement

Nozzles and attachments elevation is the length between the nozzles or the attachments
centerline and the bottom or top head tangent line.
The elevation dimension is addressed directly in the general assembly drawing. The
elevation tolerances are not addressed in ASME Code SEC VIII Div 1 and Div2, but if you
refer to the pressure vessel handbook, almost ±0.25 inch is permissible.
for example, in bellow drawing the elevation of nozzle (n02) is 700mm, acceptable for
actual value is 700mm±6.25mm.
Fig.3C: Nozzles and attachments elevation

Deviation circumferentially measured on the outer surface of vessel shall be measured

base on fig 3d. tolerance in this part does not also addressed in ASME VIII-Div1 and Div2.
It addressed in pressure vessel handbook.

Fig.3d: Nozzle distance circumferentially measuring

Deviation of bolt holes in any direction can be checked during piping installation, this
dimension addressed in ASME PCC1.

9. Out of plumbness for Shell

One of the most important part of tolerance is out of plumbness of shell in vertical pressure
vessel. Handbook (reference 7) addressed this dimension. Concept of out of plumbness
cab be found in Fig5.

Fig.5 : Concept of out of plumbness(OOP)

Acceptance criteria for out of plumbness is as below:

a. Out of plumbness for vessel (H<=30ft(9.1m)) ±1/2 ±12.7

±1/8 per 10 feet ±3.1 per 3 meter
b. Out of plumbness for vessel (H>30ft(9.1m))
Max=11/2in Max= 37.5mm

10. Shell and head distortion and out of Roundness

ASME VIII-Div1-UG-80 and ASME VIII-Div2-6.2.1.7 deal with out of roundness.

The maximum permitted ovality tolerance (D max – D min) shall not exceed 1% of the
nominal diameter of the vessel.
If you have an opening, then the tolerance can be increased by 2% x d (d = diameter of
opening), if the measurement is taken within a distance of ‘d’ from the axis of the opening.
The out of roundness generally is measured in two directions with a normal measuring tape
or laser measure, so one direction would be the D max and other one would be the D min.
The following picture shows an out of roundness measurement:

Fig.6a: Diameter measurement and out of roundness concept

Tolerance 1 % is for shell under external pressure, we shall also calculate tolerance for
shell under external pressure base on ASME VIIIDiv1-UG 80b.
See relative curve in according to an example:

Figure(6b) UG-80.1: Maximum Permissible Deviation from a Circular Form e for Vessels
Under External Pressure
The tolerance dimension for vessel under external pressure, depends on length, diameter
and thickness of vessel . It recommended that tolerance for vessel under external pressure
attended, because of unexcepted emptying condition and abnormal operation.
Shape of formed heads and tolerance addressed in ASME VIII-Div1-UG81 and ASME VIII-
Div2 - 6.1.2.7.
The inside surface shall not deviate outside the shape by more than 1.25% of the inside
diameter nor inside the shape by more than 0.625% of the inside diameter.
The concept of tolerance deviation for formed head is explained in Fig 6c by an example.

Fig.6C: Formed head distortion tolerance

We can see overall tolerance in this subpart as below:

a) Shell under internal Pressure ±1%

= min {a,b}
b) Shell under External Pressure Depend on L, D,t

c) Nozzle ±2%

d) form head Diameter 1.25% Diameter

e) High of Head 0.625% Diameter

11. Weld Misalignment (offset)

Weld misalignment (offset) have addresses in ASME VIII-Div1-UW33 as below:

(a) Alignment of sections at edges to be butt welded shall be such that the maximum offset
is not greater than the applicable amount for the welded joint category under
consideration, as listed in ASME VIII-Div1-Table UW-33 and ASME VIII-Div1-Fig UW3.
The section thickness t is the nominal thickness of the thinner section at the joint.
(b) Any offset within the allowable tolerance provided above shall be faired at a three to
one taper over the width of the finished weld, or if necessary, by adding
Fig.7a: Weld Category base on ASME VIII

This tolerance and dimension have also addressed in ASME VIII-Div2

Fig.7b: Weld misalignment (offset)

Accept criteria for Weld misalignment (offset) is as below:

Joint Category A
a. Thickness <=13mm 0.25xThickness(t/4)

b. 13mm<Thickness<=19mm ±1/8in ±3
c. 19mm<thickness<=38mm ±1/8in ±3

d. 38mm<=thickness<=51mm ±1/8in ±3

e Thickness <=51mm Min[t/16,3/8in] Min[t/16,10mm]

Joint Category B, C, D

c. 13mm<Thickness<=19mm 0.25xThickness(t/4)
d. 19mm<thickness<=38mm ±3/16in ±5mm
e. 38mm<=thickness<=51mm ±1/8in ±3mm
f. Thickness <=51mm Min[t/8,3/4in] Min[t/8,19mm]
Weld misalignment(peaking) or angular deviation have not been addressed in ASME VIII-
Div1 and ASME VIII-Div2 . this value addressed in EN 13455-part4 and API 579-Part 8.
There 2 step’s for evolution of peaking:
Step#1: measurement of peaking
Measurement of the radial (offset) and angular (peaking) misalignment at the weld joint is
required to use the assessment procedures for weld misalignment.
a) For flat plates, these two quantities can be established by knowing the plate thicknesses,
disposition of the surfaces of the plates in the weld joint (e.g., internal surfaces are flush),
the maximum offset between the plate centerlines at the weld joint, and for angular
misalignment, the effective height and length used to characterize the deviation.
b) For cylindrical or spherical shells, the radial misalignment(peaking) can be established by
knowing the plate thicknesses and the disposition of the surfaces of the plates in the weld
joint (e.g., internal surfaces are flush). The angular misalignment at the joint can be
established by using a template as shown in Figure 7c with length equal 900mm. The arc
length of the template should extend beyond the locally deformed region resulting from the
angular misalignment (or the contact point as shown in Figure c), and should be established
using the inside or outside radius of the cylinder, as applicable. The template should be
notched as shown in Figure c so that no part of it is in contact with the area of weld
reinforcement (weld cap). Using this technique, the maximum deviation can be calculated
using either of the following equations. For a center template,

For and for a rocked template

Fig.7c: Procedure for peaking measurement

Step#2:
Evaluation base reference cod. Peaking is not addressed in ASME VIII-Div1 and evolution
shall be done base on Pressure vessel handbook and /or EN 13455-Part4 Each is more
strict
a. Thickness <=3mm ±1.5mm
b .3mm<=Thickness<6mm ±2.5mm
c. 6mm<=Thickness<9mm ±3.5mm

13. Tray and Tray support of Tower’s

Trays are specifically designed for applications where unusual uplift surges exist so that
mechanical failure is prevented. These trays are equipped with special heavy-duty features
which allow the individual tray components to act as a network, whereby, the fully assembled
tray is capable of withstanding pressure surges of up to one, two or even three p.s.i., without
permanent deformation or dislodgement of any of the components.

Fig.9a: Example of Tray and accessories in Tower

If tray will be installing after Tower installation, instruction for entrance shall be attended,
some concern about entrance of personal (base on contractor experience) submitted here:
Entering a confined space, such as a distillation column requires further training that conveys
the additional hazards and associated safety requirements. An air mover may be required for
ventilation, but this can increase noise as block an escape path. Everyone entering the
confined space need t maintain communication, but in the noisy site, verbal communication
is limited. Usually necessitating radio communication. Knowing your own limits is an
important component of safety, but for yourself and you team consider your comfort with
heights, confined space and darkness. The decision to proceed throughout the inspection
depends on you personal safety evolution. Climbing out side and around can be hazardous
because of cluttered scaffolding and platforms close to ladders that may poke into ladder
cage.

After ensuring a safe work preparation, measurements should be made. Levelness

measurement is shown as below.
