Success at a young age
A Chalk.com
William Zhou, one of the owners of Chalk.com, had
always believed that teachers had it easy. As far as
Zhou was concerned, teachers just taught from a book
and enjoyed long holidays each year. It was only after
visiting his old school that he realized just how hard a
teacher’s life can be. While he was there, he saw first-
hand the vast quantity of work that teachers have to
deal with; writing lesson plans, preparing exams, plus
the other paperwork they have to do. So Zhou came up
with an idea to make teachers’ daily workloads much
more manageable and Chalk.com was born. It’s an app
that makes teamwork easier, and helps with planning
lessons and assessment. It’s now used worldwide by
both primary and secondary school teachers.
B Clef
According to Clef owner, Brennen Bryne, most people
set up very simple passwords to log on to their bank
accounts – things like a pet’s name, or their husband’s
or wife’s date of birth. Bryne knew that this low level
of security was unsatisfactory, so he invented an easier
way of logging on to websites, getting rid of the need
for choosing, remembering and typing in passwords.
Your phone replaces words and numbers because the
website simply recognizes this device instead. Bryne
believes that this system means anyone can have
access to good security. Clef has quickly grown in
popularity with gaming and developer tool sites, and
indeed manages logins to more than 40,000 websites.
C Codie
Adam Lipecz, owner of Codie, maintains that children
not only need to be able to use technology but also
recognize how exactly it works. And that’s where
Codie comes in. The toy robot and application has
been specially designed to get children interested in
writing code. Lipecz claims the other educational toys
that are available do not go far enough in helping
children understand how to write code. His aim, he
says, is to produce a better tool that focuses on coding

patterns. Instruction in computer programming has
moved beyond the traditional classroom, it seems, as
more and more organizations are offering to do what
Codie does.
D Grove
Grove labs believes that inspiring people to take
responsibility for growing their own vegetables has
benefits for both people and planet. And Grove owner,
Gabe Blanchet, believes that seasons or location need
not get in the way. Blanchet recalls how she and co-
owner, Jamie, built an indoor garden during their
university years and enjoyed fresh fruit, vegetables and
herbs all winter. The idea grew from there, Blanchet
explains, as they realized that by designing a similar,
but perhaps more beautiful and technologically
superior system, they had the potential to develop a
successful company while simultaneously making the
world healthier and more sustainable.
E VirtualU
VirtualU combines a special type of technology with
fitness and healthcare so that people can see how their
body is changing as they do their workout and move
closer to their target weight or body shape. VirtualU’s
VFit Scanner allows people to get their height, weight,
body mass, body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, and
the measurements of virtually every body part – all
with a twenty second scan which works in the same
way as a computer scanner makes images of
documents, for example. As Caroline Pugh, one of the
owners of VirtualU, explains, the scanner saves people
almost ninety minutes on their health assessment as
compared to previously. Pugh also believes that her
technology will be used in the future by online
shoppers who want to find the best outfit for
themselves.
