ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The experiences in writing this research paper had been full of ups and

downs but it is all worthwhile. Stress brought about by sleepless nights on the

computer constraining the juices of knowledge and wisdom out of my brain. This

thesis is a leap forward in my years of study and hard work and a testament for

what I have learned as a student and a teacher. Apart from the magnificent

experiences at Holy Cross of Davao College-Graduate School, it was also a

pleasure working with wonderful people throughout these years. But without the

help, assistance and guidance of these noteworthy persons, this would have not

been possible and thus it is just right for me to acknowledge them:

I would also like to thank the panel of experts who were involved in

scrutinizing my work: Dr. Norma Cabonce, Dr. Emma Unciano, Dr. Genevaive M.

Pepito, and Ms. Doris Giron. Without their passionate participation and input, the

research work could not have been successfully finished.

I would like to thank my thesis adviser Dr. Wenceslao Palma Gil for being

always there and extended his helping hand and guiding heart in the conduct of

this study. In times of trouble and confusion in research, he was always there to

steer me and my research to the right path and inspired me to push and work

harder.
iv

I also wish to mention my family in Panabo National High School and

Panabo City Senior High School especially to Ma’am Memia B. Infiesto and

Ma’am Darna S. Tan and Ma’am Zenaida L. Capillanes for the undying support.

My special thanks to my family who have always been my inspiration to

push forward, Mama Luz B. Kakilgan, Papa Avelino D. Kakilgan Jr., my sister

Abegail and my brother Avoniel, my wife Joy B. Kakilgan and my daughter Althea

Jullienne B. Kakilgan for constantly inspiring and motivating me.

And finally, to our Almighty God for always filling me with physical, mental,

and emotional vitality to continue working in spite of the challenges I

encountered.

ABSTRACT

Psychologists consider student engagement as a primary pathway by

which attitude contribute to students’ learning and development. Academically
engaged students self-regulate their learning, make plans for upcoming tasks,
and persist when encountering obstacles and challenges (Mai, Yusuf & Saleh,
2015). In the present study, the author explored the extent of attitude (interest,
motivation and difficulty of science) and level of engagement (behavioral,
emotional and cognitive, and the difference in the level of attitude and level of
engagement of Senior high School students towards Physical Science when
analyzed terms of sex and section. A qualitative-descriptive research design was
used in this study and a validated and reliability tested survey questionnaire,
consisting a total of 47 questions was employed to 220 students of Panabo City
Senior High School to gather essential data.
It is found that SHS students have moderately high extent of attitude and
level of engagement towards physical science, that the difference in their attitude
and level of engagement in physical science in terms of their variance according
sex was not significant but when analyzed according to the variance in section,
significant difference was observed. This led to the conclusion that SHS students
have positive attitude towards physical science that is manifested on their
engagement towards it, that the difference in the attitude and level of
engagement of males and females is small but there is a noticeable difference in
the attitude and level of engagement of students in physical science of different
sections/strand. (150 to 200 WORDS)
