MEC1007F_MEC1010F Exam Preparation


ALL Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering Students MUST SIT THIS EXAM.

There are 2 exam venues in the Sports Center.


Please ensure that you arrive early to set up your drawing board etc.

TOPICS TO BE EXAMINED:
Free Hand Sketching:
• Pay attention to PROPORTIONS in a free hand sketch. The view should fill the limit box.
• ONLY the limit box may be drawn with a ruler.
• You may use construction lines, just ensure that they are lighter than the drawing.
Orthographic Projection:
• You will be required to project additional views from given orthographic views or an isometric view where you
need to choose your front view.
• Be careful to not let your projection lines interfere with your view.
• Construction lines must be VERY light.
• Plan and position your views to ensure space for dimensions if you are asked to add dimensions.
Dimensions
• Add dimensions according to the SABS 0111-1 (1990) standard
• Please pay careful attention to the standard used for this course.
Sectioned and Auxiliary Views
• Pay attention to the direction of the arrows on the cutting line.
• Use the correct cutting line line-style.
• Remember when you are replacing the principal view with a sectioned view no label is required.
• Always draw the arrow in the direction of the plane that you are projecting in an auxiliary view.
• In an auxiliary view only draw the true shape, not the whole view. It may become a partial auxiliary view.
Geometry
• Tangents need a compass and constructions should always be shown.
• Points of tangent are shown with a short 5mm line at the point of tangency.

IMPORTANT:
• Be reminded that in a 2hr exam topics need to be combined to assess as many topics as possible.
• Read the questions carefully and only do what is asked of you.
• Line type, neatness, lettering (PRINTED TEXT) and constructions all count for marks.
• Attempt ALL the questions, even if you don’t finish them.
• There may be NO BORROWING of drawing equipment so ensure that all your equipment is functional.
• Bring a student card, ID, Passport or Drivers License with you to gain entrance into the exam venue.
• PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR STUDENT NUMBER IS ON EVERY PAGE YOU SUBMIT.
