DIGITAL PRIVACY MINI-LESSON PLAN

LESSON TITLE

"Guardians of the Digital Galaxy: A Digital Adventure on Public Wi-Fi!"

ISTE STANDARDS FOR STUDENTS

1.2d- Students manage their personal data to maintain digital privacy and security and are aware of data-
collection technology used to track their navigation online.

FOCUS QUESTION

What are the risks with using public Wi-Fi networks and how can I protect my information and data when
using them?

RELATED QUESTIONS

How can I protect my device from malware and viruses while connected to public Wi-Fi?

OBJECTIVE

Students will be able to identify concerns with using public Wi-Fi and strategies for protecting personal
information and data.

RESOURCES NEEDED

• Student devices (laptops or desktops) with working microphone and web camera
• Edpuzzle guided activity on Public WiFi
• Materials for “Wi-Fi Wizards” game: plastic cups, post its, pretend money (Mustang Money),
pencils
• Flip.com group and topic link for reflection
• Nearpod lesson

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
Use the Nearpod lesson to help guide the students through the activities and provide written directions
along with teacher explanations.

Begin the lesson with an activating game, called “Wi-Fi Wizards.” After explaining that Wi-Fi is when a
signal created allows devices, like computers or tablets, connect to one another and the internet, share
that they will be playing a game where they are Wizards on the hunt for safe Wi-Fi crystals. Before the
game starts, the teacher will hide the plastic cups around the room with post-its underneath saying “safe”
or “steal”. Students will be given 5 dollars in pretend money and told they are able to keep it in their
digital bank until the end of the game, but they need to find the Wi-Fi crystals to connect their devices.
Watch out though! Some have “steal”, and you could lose some of your personal information or money.

At the end of the game, students will talk about their connections and join the teacher led Edpuzzle
video. Throughout the video about using public Wi-Fi and how to protect our data, students will respond
to either open-ended questions or multiple-choice questions as formative assessments. The teacher will
move around the room to assist or facilitate when needed.

To conclude the lesson, students will use a topic on Flip to create a video reflection response about what
they can do to protect their information while using public Wi-Fi.

EXTENSION IDEAS

Students can work in small groups to create a comic strip of the Wi-Fi wizards, finding safe Wi-Fi
networks, and protecting themselves against the “trolls” trying to steal their information. This comic can
be shared through the class website with other classes or parents.

Students can create an informative podcast episode using Flip to share ways we can stay safe while
connecting to public Wi-Fi networks for parents before a long break when many families are traveling and
may need to use unfamiliar Wi-Fi connections.

TEACHING TIPS

Before starting the lesson, review the digital links and ensure students can easily access the Edpuzzle
activity and Flip topic through the student devices.

Part of the fun of the wizard game is to find the Wi-Fi spots. Have students close their eyes or hide the
cups before the game to give them a challenge when looking.

Share your own experience with connecting to open Wi-Fi networks. Talk about the Wi-Fi most of us have
in our own homes and if we have a password to protect our signal from others connecting without our
knowledge.
