Motivation Strategy
 Na0.67(Mn0.5Fe0.25Co0.25)O2  Synthesis by scalable  solid state route
NaMFC [2]
Better performance with Co [1]
Na0.67(Mn0.6Fe0.25Co0.15)O2
BUT Co  safety and cost issues
Partial substitution Full substitution
 Work: Reducing Co content and keep similar properties

Concept validated with Na0.67(Mn0.6Fe0.25Co0.15)O2[2] Na0.67(Mn0.6Fe0.25Co0.075Al0.075)O2 Na0.67(Mn0.6Fe0.25Al0.15)O2

Can we substitute Co by Al? [3] NaMFCA [3] NaMFA [3]

Materials characterization
 SEM pictures of the materials
 XRD patterns of the materials
NaMFC

 Platelets shape particles for

all materials

 Small spherical particles

NaMFCA NaMFA  impurity

P2 structure mainly kept but shift of some peaks different cell
parameters + occupation site
Successfull synthesis of NaMFCA and NaMFA compounds

Electrochemical performance Ex situ XRD

Rate Performance Galvanostatic curves (1st cycle) XRD patterns  end of 1st charge

1M NaClO 4 in PC – Loading 6 mg/cm2

1 C = 123 mAh/g (Chagas et al. J. Mater Chem 2014)

 Higher performance with Al containing materials  Loss of ̴300 mV in discharge potential for NaMFA  Z phase better defined for Al containing materials

Better performance with Al materials  Why? Stabilization Z phase with Al?

Conclusions
 Successfull substitution of Co by Al  Similar morphology and minor structural change (≠ cell parameters + occupation site)
 Better electrochemical performance for Al containing materials but lower discharge potential
