LEARNING CONCEPTS

Have you ever observed how houses are built? Before constructing buildings and
houses, workers prepare the framework using steel or wood. They act as support and
framework to make the house stand and stay firm.
The framework in houses and buildings is similar with the skeletal system. The skeletal
system provides the structural framework for the body and protects the internal organs
such as the heart, the lungs, and the brain.

EXERCISE 1

DIRECTIONS: Answer the following.

1) What supports houses and buildings to make them stand and stay firm?
_______________________________________________________________________________
2) What happens to houses and buildings if they do not have support before
constructing?
_______________________________________________________________________________
3) Why is the skeletal system important?

4) What is skeletal system?

5) What are the functions of the skeletal system?

STRUCTURE OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM

The human skeleton consists of two divisions: the axial and the appendicular
skeleton.
Bones are classified as long, short, flat, and irregular in shape. Long bones are found
in the limbs like the arms and legs. Short bones are found in the wrists and ankles. Flat
bones are in the shoulder blades and skull. Irregular bones are found in the face and in the
verterbrae.
