A few years back, numerous credible studies have been published, emphasizing

how significant it is for students to enhance their mathematical skills. As part of

upgrading education, it has also been an integral medium to learn and discover new

things in today’s generation. These facts have stimulated both the research community

and the global population at large.

Mathematics has been perceived as one of the major subjects requiring analysis,

skills, and critical thinking. Teachers often vary their strategies, methodologies, and

instructional materials to make the students understand the lesson and content in

Mathematics; however, students often lose understanding when complex math

procedures are being taught.

In line with this, the Department of Education (DepEd) has established the

Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), a Saturday class program

that aims to help students to better understand the nature of mathematical learning.

Throughout the school year, students are constantly allowed to excel and be developed

into competitive learners through the different extracurricular activities that the school

provides.

According to Galleto (2017), the Implementation of this program is utilized as a

component of multiple identification processes in the teaching and learning of

mathematics. Essentially, they offer the students the opportunity to establish personal

goals and learn new information. This program has widely influenced Philippine

education as it provides several incentives for the students who are participating in this

activity.
Oligo (2019) asserted that students commonly joined the MTAP program for its

advanced lesson, helping them to become better in math. During the participation of

students, they were given credits and incentives in a coordinated effort to ensure that

students understood the particular lesson. Participation in each school has rapidly

increased due to the beneficiary nature of the MTAP program. For example, students

who joined the said program were given additional points for performance tasks and are

exempted from quarterly examinations. Despite the beneficiary nature of the math

program, the prospects of winning and losing and other aspects can influence

mathletes.
